reading the posts about cavorting reminded me of another old word you dont hear much these days, cleave aparently there are two meanings. One is to split, say a log with an axe, the other is to stick like glue.People used the words years ago to talk about husband and wife.Anyone else got an old word not used much??

While eating my bran flakes at breakfast this morning I remembered my Mum used to say we all need our "roughage" - nowadays it's called fibre but it's still effective ?

We don't hear much about 'rogues' these days or a 'doxy' - or a 'spinster'

I like 'frock' but haven't used that word for years. I might re-introduce it to the granddaughters! Another word came to mind recently, but I've forgotten it .....

Old Scots
winching = courting

Wench as used by my late FiL

BlueBelle Wed 14-Feb-18 22:06:35

Courting

Not heard anyone say "jiggerypokery" for a long time. With the current situation with Oxfam et al, I think it's time for a comeback.

And "pinny" for apron seems to have vanished too.
And I always say "frock" too, Annie, nicer than dress.

annodomini Wed 14-Feb-18 22:51:33

"Winching" was in common use when I was at school in Ayrshire. That was 60 years ago, so does that qualify it (or me) as 'old Scots'?

Jalima1108 Wed 14-Feb-18 23:02:04

That's a load of claptrap
or tommyrot

Cherrytree59 Wed 14-Feb-18 23:05:17

Oops annodomini
I didn't mean as in archaicshock
Just old as in my grandmother would enquire if
'I was winching' and if he was a 'gud laudie'
grin

Jalima1108 Wed 14-Feb-18 23:11:12

I used to go to the pictures, sometimes by Shanks's pony

Nelliemoser Wed 14-Feb-18 23:25:37

My daughter gets annoyed when I talk about wearing "posh frocks". Nothing like winding up a daughter. I don't think she quite gets the meanings we had about wearing our "posh frocks."
