Alexa Thank you for the linksmile
It would seem that several countries have their own Nougat recipes and their own pronunciations.

Panis Nucatus ( L) Nut bread = Nougat.

Nugget for me ( as in a double nugget from the i e cream van!)

Regarding Uranus...I avoided mentioning the planet as I never liked ‘your anus’! However when I became interested in/ studied astrology I decided to pronounce it ’yurannus’, which works for me?

Wetnosewheatie Mon 12-Mar-18 19:27:23

Nuggit unless I am pretending to be posh then it’s nougat

GranEd Mon 12-Mar-18 16:20:41

Nugget and scon. Don’t do posh!

NfkDumpling Mon 12-Mar-18 16:19:36

Nugget, scon, Nessuls, shedule, litchen, etc. Proud to be Common!

I am trying to get used to Boudika instead of Boodasia, but it’s hare.

The first time I heard Nougat pronounced Noogar was by a nice but very posh teacher at school. Impressed, I was!

MissAdventure Mon 12-Mar-18 11:45:50

That's changed too. How do people know when to change?

humptydumpty Mon 12-Mar-18 11:43:53

On the subject of non-food pronunciations - what about U-ran-us? When I was growing up it was U-rane-us...

Alexa Mon 12-Mar-18 11:14:10

Alexa Mon 12-Mar-18 11:09:27

There's also montelimar . Is nougat a place name too?

humptydumpty Mon 12-Mar-18 10:55:45

Grew up in Devon, always said 'nugget' (and skon!)

annodomini Mon 12-Mar-18 10:37:37

I never liked it, but my family - back in mid-century - would have said nugget. If I was called upon to use the word, nowadays, it would be the French pronunciation.

MissAdventure Mon 12-Mar-18 10:20:00

I'm glad there are some nuggeters left!

KatyK Mon 12-Mar-18 10:14:12

I always say 'nugget' and Nestle was always pronounced Nessuls and so it shall remain in this house grin

lemongrove Mon 12-Mar-18 10:08:11

As a child ‘nuggit’ now ‘noogar’ but tbh I don’t think I have said it out loud, just thought it.?

Smithy Mon 12-Mar-18 09:21:01

Never mind the nugget, "skedule" is the American pronunciation of the English word "schedule". Skedule really grates on me!

Grandma70s Mon 12-Mar-18 08:42:45

eloethan, as far as I’m concerned it’s still homidge. There are various poems and hymns that wouldn’t scan properly if we used the French pronunciation, which I think has come via America and which, like most American pronunciations, drives me mad.

DanniRae Mon 12-Mar-18 08:32:42

Miss A - that made me laugh!
It's nugget for me - I never got posh I suppose sad

sodapop Mon 12-Mar-18 08:30:18

Noogah for me as well

I used to say scone as in cone when I was young in Yorkshire now it's scon.

kittylester Mon 12-Mar-18 08:23:01

I always called it nugget because my nan did.

I'm much more sophisticated now!

harrigran Mon 12-Mar-18 08:20:50

Noogah.

jenpax Mon 12-Mar-18 07:27:01

I have always pronounced it noogah? I didn’t know there was an alternative and have never heard anyone call it nugget?

oldgoat Mon 12-Mar-18 06:24:22

And we always said lichen , not lie-ken as they say it on the tele. these days.
