Flying with hand luggage only

We are going on a last minute break in just over a week and have opted to go hand luggage only. I’m fairly sure it should be ok clothes-wise, but having always put any liquids in the hold luggage, my question is, what sort of thing do I need to put in the clear bag when going through security? I’m happy enough to buy shower gel, sun cream etc but what about things like toothpaste, mascara etc? Help needed please!

Welshwife Fri 01-Jun-18 20:00:07

Up to 100ml are allowed but toothpaste does count as a liquid.

www.gov.uk/hand-luggage-restrictions

From this you’ll see that creams and mascara count as liquids too

So does lip balm, lipstick etc and stick deodorant.

In fact basically everything does but I find dh doesn’t use his allowance so he has some of mine?

Jalima1108 Fri 01-Jun-18 20:22:28

I have never managed just hand luggage.
I wish I could, but I seem to be a 'just might need that' type of person.

Jalima1108 Fri 01-Jun-18 20:23:24

Yes, NonnaW, including tubes of insect bite cream etc.

NonnaW Fri 01-Jun-18 20:33:39

Is there a restriction on how many tubes, bottles etc you take?

NonnaW Fri 01-Jun-18 20:34:43

And Jalima this will be a test for us too, probably harder for DH than me as he always overpacks.

You can only take 100ml bottles that fit into a closed 20x20cm clear plastic bag.

BlueBelle Fri 01-Jun-18 20:41:02

I always fly with hand luggage only (well obviously not long haul) there is not really a problem with the plastic bag you need most makeup in not powder of course I have my contact lense bottle underarm deorant small travel size toothpaste and small perfume as well as make up If you ve got too much you can always buy toothpaste or suncreams etc when you arrive Savers donlots if small amount travel items cheap No restriction on how many bits as long as it fits with the bag sealed up and nothings only 100 ml

Or if there is a Boots at the airport buy stuff there when you have gone through security!

tanith Fri 01-Jun-18 20:50:57

A few times I’ve taken through two bags putting each one in a different tray at security as I’ve always had to use two trays for all my things I’ve never been asked about the second bag.

maryeliza54 Fri 01-Jun-18 20:55:02

Ooh you naughty thing tanith you do live dangerously?

tanith Fri 01-Jun-18 21:05:10

someone I know told me about it and so I put in some things I didn’t mind losing the first time and was surprised that no one said anything so if I struggle to fit it in one bag I take another and put in things like deodorant, toothpaste that’s easily replaced not expensive makeup. ?

Gerispringer Fri 01-Jun-18 21:22:11

I’m a frequent flyer short haul and take small plastic screw on containers you can buy at Superdrug or Wilco and decant the amount of shampoo etc I think I’ll need for the trip. Failing that, Boots at the airport sell the travel sized little tubes of anything I’ve forgotten. I buy the factor 50 sun lotion for face and that doubles up as a moisturiser. If staying in a hotel you don’t need many toiletries. You can squash quite a lot of makeup into the small clear bag.

Maggiemaybe Fri 01-Jun-18 21:50:39

tanith, I like your style! I used to fob half my stuff off onto DH, but Manchester Airport has started insisting his inhalers go in his plastic bag, so he doesn’t have the space now. I need contact lenses and dry shampoo as well as the usual gubbins, so I might try your way next time. smile I always keep my lipstick in my handbag and haven’t been challenged yet.

BlueBelle Fri 01-Jun-18 21:51:07

Tanith you’ve been VERY. lucky I lost something just because I couldn’t do the sliding fastener up so they insisted on taking it out. I certainly wouldn’t bank on trying that one NonnaW or you will probably lose one bag of things
If you’re in any doubt the staff outside the departure gates are usually very helpful with advice what is and what isn’t acceptable

A few years ago we flew with just hand luggage.
I bought our toiletries, make up and Sun tan lotion (plus sandwiches and bottled water for the flight,) at the airport from Boots with the help of Boots points saved throughout the year.
So no problem taking liquids on the plane.

The best bit for me was walking straight out of airport instead of waiting to grab several cases from the dreaded carousel.smile

If you're only going for a few days though, and buy at the airport, you end up out of pocket as you have to leave it all behind afterwards. Perhaps that's just me being tight! I did once come to grief waiting to buy my dry shampoo at the airport, only to discover that Boots was closed for refurbishment.

mumofmadboys Sat 02-Jun-18 07:57:56

It is a good feeling having only a small carry on case and not waiting at the carousel. A good discipline packing light!

silverlining48 Sat 02-Jun-18 08:06:23

Always take carry on, it is great just getting off the plane and straight outside. However rules are sometimes adhered to and often not, like a secind handbag. I stuff mine into the case and wonder at others who have carry ins plus decent size handbags. Rarely are they stopped and asked to first these into their cases. On the other hand I was once luckily it went in.
As for liquids I decant into those small clear plastic containers, from poundland. The idea if a second plastic bag is cheeky but may consider. If it’s a beach destination I need lots if suncream and it can be very expensive abroad so usually we take one larger one between us.

Maggiemaybe Sat 02-Jun-18 08:36:38

Just a quick tip, NonnaW, if you’re not used to travelling with carry-on only. If you’re on a full plane, and one of the last to board, you risk having it taken off you and put in the hold anyway (the worst of both worlds!). So get to the gate in good time.

Maggiemaybe
Next time you begrudge leaving toiletries in your room, give a thought to the chambermaids who are on piss poor wages, maybe the only breadwinner in the family who will be very happy to take that stuff home.
If she's got say, 20 rooms, all the toiletries that are left will help her out a great deal.

NonnaW Sat 02-Jun-18 09:36:34

Many thanks for all your help and advice ladies, especially the link maryeliza, I’ve downloaded that. I shall go looking in Poundland and savers to see what I can get.

One more question (apologies if I’ve missed this previously), where can I get the plastic bags?
