This is very general but as I understand it, dishwashers use from 4 to 6 gallons of water per cycle depending on the rating of the machine. Running a tap for a minute emits about 2 gallons of water. Hand-washing up three meals a day is likely to use more water than one machine cycle. You have to factor in energy costs (and detergent) to get a better picture of overall economy and efficiency but I'd say a machine is better ... and much more hygenic.
