Someone I know has just had a new washing machine with a capacity of 6 kg. Does anyone know how much she can put in? For example can it take a double duvet cover, sheet and pillow slips?

The instruction booklet which comes with the machines gives her those details.

Our new machine is 6kg max load, just didn't notice when buying it, not too happy about it...find that 4to5 bath towels fills it..

I weighed the washing when I first got mine, which takes 7.5 kg. It is really full to bursting if you do put that much in, and I don't think there is enough room for the washing to get a proper wash if it's jam packed like that. It's only for hot washes - for cooler temps the limit is 4.5 kg.

But to answer the question I reckon you could get 10 hand towels and a week's worth of underpants in easily. Just weigh it all first. (I got on the scales with an empty basket and then again with the full basket and worked out the difference)

Someone online says that in Which
"they say you should be able to fit into a 6kg load -
6 small towels
2 pillowcases
6 T-shirts
2 sheets
2 pairs of jeans
14 socks"
(but I couldn't find it, must be from an old page)

However I did find that Which has this graphic which shows how many towels fit into the various drum sizes. www.which.co.uk/reviews/washing-machines/article/which-washing-machine/which-washing-machine-should-you-buy For 6kg it has 9 towels.

I saw a rule of thumb somewhere - you should be able to put your hand above the clothes in the machine with a thumbs-up, to be sure there is room for them to move about.

I bought a slim washing machine on purpose as I don't have much space in my utility room. It has a capacity of 6 kg. I can do a king size duvet cover, bottom sheet and two pillow cases in it. As there are only two of us, it's perfectly adequate.

Our last one was 5kg and I used to weigh things at first.
But later the machine often just stopped when it came to spin, especially if there were items in it that absorb a lot of water such as towels.
Then I had to take a few things out and re-start.

I never put that many towels in our 8kg machine - I don't think they rinse properly if the load is too much.

It depends on the programme too - check the instruction booklet because some programmes will take a full load and do more rinses, whereas a 'mixed load' programme will only take about 3kg, doing two rinses with the option of an extra one.

I have a 9kg one amd the option of 1-5 rinses. I do a double duvet cover, double sheet and 4 pillow cases and I’d say that’s optimal.

shock I've never imagined a time when I would even think to weigh my washing, but I now realise that I could actually put much more into my machine than I currently do.

I just emptied mine - there were 3 large towels, 3 small towels and about a dozen pairs of underpants. This just sufficed to line the drum once the cycle had finished, so I could easily have fit three times that much in.

However, this was light-coloured stuff. I don't have that much light coloured things (light blue towels, only used when we have visitors, skin-coloured underpants)

I like to wash whites together, and wouldn't put light blues, beiges, etc, in with the dark coloured towels (we even have black towels! And some black duvet covers!) - so it's worth remembering this when buying new linens: try and keep to colours that will wash together to make for more economical washes.

Also - it's best to follow the instructions on the packet re quantities of washing powder - you obviously need more for 6-7 kg of towels than you do for 3 kg of polyester or mixed fibre blouses, but it's hard to judge how much more.

I don’t even know what capacity my machine has, let alone what my dirty washing weighs. As long as it’s not stuffed to the gunnels, it’ll be just fine, ime.

Oh dear another failure in my housewife skills!! No idea what capacity my washing machine or tumble dryer are. Have never weighed dirty washing, just load it up and press go ?????

The only reason I weighed our washing was because we had just bought a very cheap small machine to replace a much bigger one that had broken permanently.
The new one did get things very clean.
Can't remember the make, it was chinese.

It's never a good idea to try to cram too many clothes into a washing machine.

It's pretty obvious surely, that the more room clothes have to move around in the drum, the cleaner they will be.

I prefer to do small frequent washes, especially in this hot weather.

In answer to your question, I would just do the duvet cover on it's own, followed by the sheets and pillowcases.

One king size duvet cover and two pillow cases would be the maximum I did in one cycle, more than this and they would not rinse or spin efficiently.
