Pink hair??

I have always said that when I went grey I would dye my hair pink.

I am nearly 70 and there is barely a sign of grey. I have long nipple length hair which is very dark brown and I have this yen to dye the bottom 6" or so pink. I could always cut it off if I did not like it.

So....shall I do it? How might I do it, as it is very dark and might not take dye? Am I mad?

Marieliz, my mother was the same - what they called strawberry blonde when younger and still not grey - just very faded - when she died at 97. Mind you at around 80 it gave her trouble with a neighbour who accused her of lying when she said she didn't dye it! There was a falling out because my mother wouldn't admit it!

I am very lucky to have the same gene - 69 and still no grey - my blonde hair just went a lot darker. I brighten it up with John Frieda Go Blonder spray - so much cheaper and less time-consuming faff than highlights, and not at all obviously growing out if I forget it for a while.

Nipple length hair.....depends where your nipples are these days. Could be waist length, even.

Yes yes yes!! I have tried everything from DIY to professional intervention to get mine to stay purple, but everything washes out of my hair very quickly no matter what I use ?

Go for it Luckygirl, as somebody else said you only live once and it isn't irrevocable. I asked the hair dresser the other day whether a bright colour would wash out or fade as I would like something done but spent ages growing out my highlights/dyed hair as I wanted to see what my natural colour was as it is years since I have seen it. I started going grey in my 20's so had died it since then. I got fed up with looking like a badger so started off with a few years of blonde highlights, went completely blonde and then went to grey. I still have some dark hair but am mainly white so I am worried that I will end up with some ugly looking faded locks if I take the plunge. The Hairdresser was completely unhelpful saying it depended whether the dye was permanent or temporary and even then you wouldn't know until after it was done.

Recently gave in and decided to go all over platinum grey with purple streaks, absolutely loved it, got lots of compliments BUT... after 2 or 3 goes at this (professionally done) my hair is now in dreadful condition, lots of hairs broken off and more split ends than I've ever had in my life. Changed hairdresser and now trying to get my hair back in to a reasonable condition so beware.

What age should you be Lucky? Your age of course! What have you got to lose? As somebody else said, it’s one of the (few!) advantages of getting older - we no longer have to care what anybody else thinks. But please post a photo!

Don't be daft, pink hair on older people looks awful. Why not enjoy your still-dark hair. Perhaps enhance it with a warm coloured rinse.

Luckygirl Sat 28-Jul-18 16:49:28

Ah - but I am daft! Perhaps that is the best reason for doing it! grin

lovebeigecardigans1955 Sat 28-Jul-18 17:37:42

Go for it. As you say if you don't like it you can always cut it off.
I've had a yen, believe it or not, for extremely short hair but am afraid that I'll end up looking like a bulldog, so daren't.

wot Sat 28-Jul-18 18:24:06

A bulldog.!??blimey!!

wot Sat 28-Jul-18 18:26:51

I had some pink. powder you put on with a sponge. It washes out. I'll see if I can find it and tell you the name of it. It was very cheap.

Ere tis "colour vibes" £1.40

Here we go - daft to have pink hair on older people, it looks awful.
Don't go naturally grey - it's ageing.

I've gone naturally grey, I love it. If its ageing, so be it - I'm ageing. I no longer care whether people think I'm in my 50's, I'm not in my 50's I'm almost 70 and can't tell you how relieved and happy I am to be within touching distance of that big birthday. Grey hair, wrinkles, and lots of other evidence of my age.
Go for it Luckygirl, if you've always promised yourself, go for that Pink Hair. Nothing wrong with being a bit daft.

It's your hair. Do what you wish!

Gherkin Sat 28-Jul-18 19:45:28

After dyeing my hair blonde for years, after an illness earlier this year and being unable to look after my hair properly I let the colour grow out to discover my hair is almost pure white. So for my 70th birthday last month I decided on some pale pink highlights and I love it. They are very subtle but I’ve had lots of compliments.

ginny Sat 28-Jul-18 19:57:15

If you want to do it , do it.
A couple of months ago I mentioned to my 15 year old DGS that I thought I might have pink streaks in my hair. A look of horror crossed his face and the he said ‘please don’t Nan, that’s embarrassing . ‘Then added ‘ you look good as
you are.’ Back handed compliment maybe ?

Melanieeastanglia Sat 28-Jul-18 20:09:45

Gherkin If that's a picture of you, I think the pink highlights look lovely.

Willow500 Sat 28-Jul-18 20:12:10

Gherkin your hair is beautiful! Luckygirl go for it - I love pink in hair. I've tried putting the spray in colour in my own blonde (dyed) hair but don't make a very good job of it. My hair has been so many different colours over my 64 years including red but it always faded after a few washes.

Lazigirl Sat 28-Jul-18 20:30:32

Iam64 you're a woman after my own heart. Stand up for old age I say and live life to the full.

Gherkin Sat 28-Jul-18 20:31:11

Melanie, it sure is. I’m surprised how much I like my white hair. Never thought I could live with it !

Willow thank you

Bellanonna Sat 28-Jul-18 20:55:19

Gherkin your hair is lovely. Style, as well as colour. Compliments!

Rowantree Sat 28-Jul-18 21:16:04

No 'shoulds', no 'not at your age', please. We can do what makes us feel good about ourselves, and what does it matter if someone else deems that being 'hippy' or any other term? I can't see the problem.

MissAdventure Sat 28-Jul-18 21:20:36

I love your hair too, gherkin.
I doubt a salon could replicate such a pretty white colour as yours.

Craicon Sat 28-Jul-18 21:25:10

Balayage means to sweep/paint by hand. The idea is to give the hair a natural, subtle, sun-kissed looking highlight unlike the uniform effect you get from foils.
Ombré is where you have a gradual change of colour from dark roots to lighter ends, a reverse ombré is light to dark.
If there’s a visible line then it’s a dip-dye (or badly done ombré)
I’m in my fifties with lilac and purple hair at the moment. I get complimented on my hair all the time.

Direct dye pastel or neon colours can be easily removed, providing you use the correct products. Unfortunately, a lot of high street hairdressers aren’t good colourists and reach for the bleach as it’s an easy solution.
But it doesn’t work well on direct dyes.
Once you apply bleach to a direct dye, it just causes the product to stain the cuticle layer and then you have to cover it or cut it out.
