Crumbs, opening a new kitchen is a bit of a responsibility. I hope everyone finds it - I'll just leave the door ajar.

Bubbles and cake on the side - enjoy!

The scene through the window is pretty spectacular. Huge waves. Ferry cancelled. Bright sunshine and blue sky.

I feel that I've as good as squandered an entire day wrestling with internet access, courtesy of Kindle. I am silently wishing that I hadn't invested in the bloody thing. If Alexa asks me how I'm doing yet again I swear I shall ask her to faff off. I do not need apps or games...I simply wish access to my family and friends. Is that too little to ask?

End of rant. There are far more important issues that deserve my attention. Such as, when did I last have a pee. Life is far too short for gadgets and such-like. I'm a simple soul. Tomorrow, I intend wearing my arty farty hat and returning to the sheer joy of being creative. End of.

Please take care. The wind is vicious. I wouldn't be surprised if trees are uprooted. Always a worry when driving along narrow roads.

I shall return to the kitchen tomorrow. There was no ironing duty today. I'm thankful for that. smile moon

You should be able to turn Alexa off, soop
try this....
^ If you want to turn the Alexa feature on or off, swipe down from the top of the screen, tap Settings, tap Device Options, then tap the switch for Alexa^
^ (on a 7th Generation Fire HD 10, tap Settings, tap Alexa, then tap the switch for Alexa.) ^

Next time a tablet savvy DC or friend visits, they should be able to clear your home screen of all unwanted app icons, and just leave you with the links you want to use smile

I have heard from a friend near Glasgow that trees there have been uprooted. Please stay safe everyone who may be Even down here the bin lids have been travelling down the road and small tree branches have come off. Minor in the grand scheme of things, I know.

Not been here before but just been reading some posts. It’s so heart warming to read some lovely posts and the care and concern for others that probably we all only know through Gransnet. It’s been a terrible and for some a tragic day. Up here in Scotland the wind is dying down, not completely away but certainly much better than during the day. After a surgical procedure yesterday on my husband we’ve had a day in the house resting and watching with trepidation the damage to our garden fences, tubs and general surroundings. We’ve been lucky, others have had to endure a lot worse. I hope everyone is safe and hopefully weather will abate.

Nannytopsy Wed 19-Sept-18 19:53:16

Hello Brunette10! Welcome and just pop the cake on the side - I can see it’s a nice big one ?. This is THE good bit of GN!

Brunette10 Wed 19-Sept-18 20:08:59

Thank you Nannytopsy. Cake and tea in place. wink

Marydoll Wed 19-Sept-18 20:19:20

I rounded a corner this afternoon on a country road to find a tree had fallen and blocked the road. Luckily I noticed, just in time, the car in front swerving quickly to avoid the tree.
DIL whom I had been to meet, couldn't get home as the other main route into our wee town was blocked by part of the Health Centre roof. Scary stuff.
So dear Kitcheners, I hope you don't mind if I come in out of the wind and have a wee cuppa, or perhaps something stronger. My nerves are a bit frazzled. ?

Soop, I hope you get to grips with that darned Kindle. grin

NanKate Wed 19-Sept-18 21:14:47

Glad to hear you had a lucky escape Marydoll. Those in the south have just had a sprinkling of rain. Glad there are no typhoons in the UK.

Hope Soop is in recovery mode.

Marelli Wed 19-Sept-18 22:46:03

Soop, so wish you both could've joined us today. A nice big fat meringue might've slid down a treat, and sticky-up hair was the order of the day anyway, what with the horrendous gales and (occasional) lashing rain. However, you've been a poorly person, and have to get yourself back to full strength before venturing out - the 'Tearoom of the Big Cakes' will be there the next time we're down your way ?. Xx

callgirl1 Wed 19-Sept-18 23:40:01

I hope the flipping Kindle doesn`t drive you completely round the bend Soop, now do you see why I stick with my laptop?
Marelli, I`m so jealous, Glenbarr tearooms were on my bucket list for our next visit to Kintyre, which sadly won`t happen now.
Nannytopsy, Chaos and Overthehills, I got your messages too late for my trip to the hairdresser, but I`m going again 2 weeks from today, hope they can fit you all in (your hair anyway!) Mine looked lovely until I was getting into the taxi to go home, when the wind tore my hood off, I arrived home in haystack backwards mode!
Brunette10, welcome to the kitchen, the warmest, friendliest place around.

callgirl1 Wed 19-Sept-18 23:41:54

Oh Chaos, talk about red rag to a bull! I googled, then I blushed! I was only telling a meter reader the other week that the cupboard under the stairs was a glory hole.

ChaosIncorporated Wed 19-Sept-18 23:42:33

Worrying to hear of so much damage in the North.
Hoping all kitcheners are safe, and dry, tonight.
marydoll ... what a lucky escape. Good to know you reached home safely.
Take care, everyone.

ChaosIncorporated Thu 20-Sept-18 04:59:15

aaaand....that was a short night!

cornergran Thu 20-Sept-18 06:54:30

Morning everyone. After 16 hours sleep I feel just a bit better. Throat still resembles sandpaper but I’m thinking how good the soup I consumed yesterday was for the waist line and the same will do no harm today.

Goodness marydoll one of those scary moments when we think of what might have been. Pleased you are safe.

Hello, brunette, good to see you. Sorry there are so many germs about.

Don’t despair soop, once you get the hang of the Kindle it will become a friend. If Mr C can do it I have every confidence in you.

A change of mobile provider has coincided with the lurgy here. I gave up yesterday trying to access my new account. It’s the germs, I’m sure all will be well when I’m feeling more like me.

So sorry, the head isn’t retaining much, indeed anything, many apologies for not responding properly to people. If my hair could have gone to the hairdresser yesterday I may resemble a haystack less this morning, oh well, I’m sure the look is fashionable somewhere.

It’s pouring here, not so windy as yet, forecast is dire though. Stay safe everyone and please all be sensible.

cornergran Thu 20-Sept-18 07:58:11

Definitely not with it. Try 10 hours not 16. I wish smile.

morethan2 Thu 20-Sept-18 08:48:55

hope your on the mend cornergran I’m forcing myself to go to aqua aerobics this morning. I really don’t want to. Think I’m feeling a bit bleak. What with the builders, the constant worry and putting on a brave face about DiL. I might need you all to give me a good talking too for the next few weeks, because I just want to sit and eat chocolate and howl. I’m rather fed up with myself to be honest. Well soop I hope the kindle thing gets sorted and you start to feel better. I know your all worried about panache I hope you hear somthing soon. To all of you old and new take care in this windy weather.

Anniebach Thu 20-Sept-18 09:04:29

Hello everyone,

I have nothing to say, not going anywhere, not seeing anyone. Was so amused yesterday, elder granddaughter phoned, she moved to the West County in June, we were chatting and she said ‘ Granny you sound so Welsh’ !

Bellanonna Thu 20-Sept-18 09:10:57

And so you should, Annie!! Btw, good luck with Fred (tomorrow I think?)

NanaandGrampy Thu 20-Sept-18 09:46:50

Morning all !!

Hope the Kindle hasn't beaten you into submission soop a little bit of arty farty will pep you up!

Hello Brunette10 , welcome to the kitchen :-)

Glad you didn't have an accident Marydoll we had some wind here yesterday but nothing like you and even that brought down a lot of bits and bobs. But today its all about the rain !

Feel better soon Corner , I hate a sore throat more than anything it seems to make everything seem unwell.

Morethan you come in and sit down and share with us lot any time you like. We cant physically help we can definitely listen .

Hello Anniebach …. waves !!!! I have probably missed it but is Fred the name of your new scooter...( or a proper person!!)

Its a stay home today ! I feel home made soup coming on now Corner has put it in my head lol and a lot of crafting . I have made bags for my sisters as a little gift when we go away. Ill add a couple of pictures.... wine is a theme somehow :-)

Stay safe everyone x

Anniebach Thu 20-Sept-18 09:59:26

NanaandGrampy, Fred is my scooter who was Bluebird but there were problems which I decided was caused by the name, the first Bluebird brought its owner to a disaster ! So decided on Fred after a one time much loved next door neighbour , - waving to you x

Greyduster Thu 20-Sept-18 10:16:14

Hello the kitchen! I am feeling a bit more myself this morning having sneezed myself senseless yesterday. I had to buy antihistamine tablets in the end, which I don’t like taking, and they were only marginally effective. I am hoping the rain we are getting today will dampen down whatever triggered it. We have no school run today as my SiL has a day off work, so I might bake today (if I don’t start sneezing again!).
Morethan aerobics will help, I’m sure. Before I had to stop last year, I usually had to force myself to go even when I didn’t have anything to get out of my system - I always felt better for it afterward. And if you feel the need to eat chocolate and howl - do it (I found it was better to do it the other way round - but doing both at the same time is not advisable)! And yes, I know I am being flippant, and yes, I know you will forgive me. And no, no-one on here is going to give you a talking to. Just hugs and good vibes.
Corner I hope you’re feeling better. I hate sore throats - and technology. A combination of the two is absolute pants!!
I will look in later. DH is threatening to confiscate my third limb my iPad if I don’t get moving soon!!

Greyduster Thu 20-Sept-18 10:18:24

N&G brilliant! I want one!

grannyqueenie Thu 20-Sept-18 10:42:37

I was having some serious sleep envy for a moment, corner then I read your correction grin. Actuallyto be truthful I’m a bit envious of 10 hours too! I hope you feel better by the moment as the day goes on. It’s too early for winter poorliness, but try telling that to the lurgies that seem to be around.
You’re so clever n&g, your sisters will love these bags I’m sure. Hmmm soup, that’s a good idea.
It’s all been a bit tense here, the saga of the decommissioned gas fire and it’s replacement rumbles on. Let’s just say words have been had, strong words, calmly but with some determination. Now I just need to wait to hear from the gasman to confirm he can unscramble what my old boy agreed was a good idea. I suspect it’s all going to cost a lot more money but it’ll be worth every penny to avoid looking at a cobbled together fire surround “with just a little bit of filler in those holes”, what the old boy thought would do is just a compromise too far for me....and honestly I’m really not that picky really. But it is the focal point of the room for heavens sake...rant over!
Annie a new scooter that’s very exciting, I hope “Fred” quickly becomes a real asset to you.
mary hope you’ve recovered from that tree scare, it’s horrible to feel you’ve been just a whisker away from a nasty accident.
callgirl I googled it too, I bet my mum never knew that when she talked about our hall cupboard blush!!
Welcome brunette, hope all’s well with your husband after his procedure. We seem to have escaped the worst of the stormy weather here but I notice a couple of garden pots have been blown over and cracked. Why is it always the newest ones that happens to?
Right I must be off to do a post holiday food shop, the cupboards are looking bare. Have a good day, whatever you’re up to kitchen folk x

Synonymous Thu 20-Sept-18 10:44:22

soop trust you are winning in the battle of the technology gremlin and that you are much better and not overdoing it. smile

N&G agree with GreyD tbey are brilliant - and you are very talented!

Hope everyone is feeling better and getting better too. So pleased that the wind seems to have died down. Apparently there were loads of trees down and our gardener friend optimistically said that the price of firewood should go down. Doubt that, things don't go down - do they?

Hi Annie hope you get SIL (who isn't) to go out with you and Fred very soon and the patio is finished as well as beautiful!

The stock is strained and the meat taken off the hough so a big pan of lentil and ham soup is planned for lunch - any takers? Himself has the breadmaker on to have some crusty rolls with it, so glad he loves to cook.
