Drones at Gatwick

It's quite incredible that two illegal drones have closed Gatwick for a second day.

I don't know what's more alarming - that it could be local kids/idiots having fun, or something more malevolent.

What a security lapse!

Members of the public have been asked to produce any video footage that might help identify the manufacturer of the drones?

Forgive me for thinking this is a bit 'Enid Blyton' when we have the RAF?

EllanVannin Thu 20-Dec-18 22:19:04

It'll be modified to bypass the batteries. Whoever it is is watching the news because when it was given out that it could be okay at 4pm the drone appeared, then the next time the " all clear " was given it was 7pm----again the drone appeared, so why can't the media shut up and stop giving out these hints ?

I think it's shameful that nobody has come up with anything and whoever's behind this " stunt " will be laughing its insane head off.

The person has to be closeby because the batteries have to be changed, the duration is maybe 10 to 20 mins. He might even vanish only to do the same at Heathrow in a couple of weeks, scary.

My grandson has a drone I was amazed, it was not controlled by a radio it was flown by a smartphone. I guess the one at Gatwick is one of those, hard to get to unless you shut down the mobile system. If it keeps moving its going to be very hard to shoot down and you can't go spraying bullets willy nilly.
Very hard to find a nutter with a mobile phone

Military drones are piloted from hundreds, if not thousands, of miles from the target. That's how the US has bombed targets in Syria, is it not? Who is to say that the perpetrator of this act of sabotage is actually in this country? Or is this notion too far-fetched?

drone snatching eagle

Watching the news earlier. Saw a bird of prey easily fetch diwn a drone. It seems that in some European countries the have specially trained birds. What a simple but effective idea

Because of Brexit ? - I've heard it all now. I'm worried it's ISIS because those 2 girls in Morocco were murdered by ISIS, the Danish government has said, and one was decapitated and filmed on the internet, which they say is genuine footage. They hate Christmas and Christians so I am quite concerned.

Sparklefizz Thu 20-Dec-18 20:00:33

Cherrytree59 Let's hope it is just coincidence re Heathrow because otherwise it's really quite a scary prospect.

I do think the drones are being organised with malicious intent, though, and much more will come to light. The whole world knows that the UK is in turmoil over Brexit. What better time to stir things even more if you want to create trouble, and give us much more to worry about.

Cherrytree59 Thu 20-Dec-18 19:01:02

Sparklefizz thank you for the update
Seems that it may just be a coincidence.

EllanVannin Thu 20-Dec-18 18:59:31

Give me the old-fashioned way any day Sparklefizz.

crystaltipps Thu 20-Dec-18 18:58:30

Could just be a nerd or someone with a psychological disorder of some kind. Wasn’t there a case a couple of years back of someone with Aspergers who hacked into the pentagon?

Sparklefizz Thu 20-Dec-18 18:54:03

I understand the IT crash at Heathrow was part of a global glitch and has now been sorted.

Cherrytree59 Thu 20-Dec-18 18:53:22

Worrying times.
I fear there maybe more to come.
I wonder who is behind it all????

EllanVannin Thu 20-Dec-18 18:47:16

Heathrow is shut down because of a computer crash so flights there are grounded.

EllanVannin Thu 20-Dec-18 18:46:27

What I was intimating when I said what I did was " as long as it's not happening to you " when you nonchalantly said it could be a person who's mental. Mental or not whoever it is is a danger to the public so no need to mention " mental " because that's no excuse for what's happening !

I wasn't the only one who'd mentioned terrorist but you chose to single me out all the same.

So I mentioned lefty. Why pick me up about that ?

Sparklefizz Thu 20-Dec-18 18:39:51

I agree GrannyGravy, it's economic terrorism, and I think it's somebody flexing their muscles to say "See what I can do to you". Could be Russia or China. In future, this will only need to be threatened for us to worry. Perhaps it's the EU? ....joke grin ) We are looking stupid on the world stage in my opinion. Scenes on the News tonight looked reminiscent of a Carry On film.

BlueBelle Thu 20-Dec-18 17:51:42

ellenvanan what a strange post no idea what you mean ‘not in my back yard’
Of course I think this axxxhole as you put it is putting lives at danger and if you read my first post you would have known that I m completely condemning who ever it was I just had issue with you presuming it was a ‘Lefty’ No one has any idea who it was at this stage

GrannyGravy13 Thu 20-Dec-18 17:28:40

It is economic terrorism, the bill for the disruption will run into many millions of pounds.

Elrel Thu 20-Dec-18 17:23:57

Nonnie- Yes, it appears to be the deliberate sustained disruption of an airport. Sabotage, whoever is responsible.

Gonegirl Thu 20-Dec-18 16:28:53

Just read that the military have been called in. "Sharpshooters" were mentioned.

MawBroon Thu 20-Dec-18 16:04:46

Terrifyingly easy to paralyse the country.

Nonnie Thu 20-Dec-18 15:57:47

I don't care who it is or what their motivation, I think they should be tried for terrorism or attempted murder, whichever attracts the longest prison sentence. It is an appalling thing to do.

M0nica Thu 20-Dec-18 15:48:54

It must be the Russians. It will not be ISIS, most of their operatives are too stupid to think up something like this.

Waterloosunset Thu 20-Dec-18 15:36:22

We were looking forward to seeing our son, daughter in law and two grandchildren today but their flight was cancelled.
We were all really sad but the good news is that they are booked on a flight tomorrow afternoon. Fingers crossed this will happen. Craftycat, if your son has any news please let me know. I am so sorry for all those affected.
