I'm watching 'The greatest dancer', and its inspired me to ask if anyone dances?
Clubs? Ballroom? Do you enjoy moving to music?
I'm too self conscious to dance, and I feel its such a shame as I love music.

I’ve just taken up jive classes at the age of seventy two!
Always loved to dance. Had to give up tap two years ago when I was diagnosed with a heel ligament problem.
It’s so much fun and good exercise too.

Northern soul used to be quite a thing here.
People would travel for miles to go to our club.
It never really interested me though, strangely enough.

Used to go dancing when I was young.
Now I have a dance around our home, radios always on
So nice to have a jig.
How many of you
f you have a good old radio like a Roberts, when I’m cooking in the kitchen always on with music playing my mum always had a radio in the house brought up with dancing to music.

I have always loved dancing. I came from a large family that had lots of parties ( without alcohol ) with much dancing. DH and I loved dancing, particularly rock n roll. After seeing the film Saturday Night Fever, we bought the soundtrack and danced to it in the fashion of the film. We always made up our own steps to the style of the music. I still dance with youngest GD. The others don't find it 'cool' now. I can never understand why music doesn't make everyone's feet long to move in time to it.

Yes if you count Zumba Gold which is moving to music using eg salsa and Charleston steps.

Glenn Miller and I'm off. Uncontrollable but I love it. Happy days indeed.

They don't make 'em like this any more. Locarno Ballroom.

Thankyou so much for that link Miss Adventure. Made me laugh so much and I had tears in my eyes because Victoria is no longer with us. She was one of few comedians who I actually find funny grinand it lead me on to other link of top ten dances from musicals. Shared it with GSs as they are very interested in dance and youngest starting lessons next week. Thanks again flowers

GabriellaG54 Sun 13-Jan-19 16:45:44

...and not once did she move her feet. They must be glued to the pavement. If she moved a bit more she'd shift some of that weight. grin

MissAdventure Sun 13-Jan-19 16:48:45

You're welcome Quickdraw.
I loved Victoria; she and Julie Walters never minded getting right into character. smile

GabriellaG54 Sun 13-Jan-19 16:56:38

That clip of the older couple...blooming marvellous. Loved it. shockgrin

Arto1s Sun 13-Jan-19 16:58:35

I love any kind of dancing, BUT, I cannot get coordinated to “floss!” Most frustrating!

Granny1sland Sun 13-Jan-19 17:39:29

Recently joined a line Dancing group - what fun, a great physical and mental work out. Love the music too!

OPgrndtr Sun 13-Jan-19 17:55:36

I started ballet and tap at 8 y/o and passed my test at 10 to go on pointe. They couldn't find a company in these whole USA that would make a shoe small enough for me, so I quit and cried. Disco, Motown, Country kept me going when I got old enough. We don't have dance clubs here, but Jazz and Salsa are wearing out my carpet. DH can't dance but LOVES to watch me. Don't stop the music.

Nonnie Sun 13-Jan-19 18:04:49

Anyone remember the hippy hippy shake?

Brightphoebus Sun 13-Jan-19 18:22:38

There are ballet classes for over fifties here in London and they are very popular. Loads of us in our sixties and seventies, struggling with direction and memory not to mention grace. We look not unlike the three year olds at the other end of the age spectrum! I did loads of ballet when young and love these classes which have women, and some men, who range from experienced but doddery to total beginners. Feet trouble mean I can’t go any more and I miss the classes so much.

As we are recalling venues and I know we have GN's from Nottingham, do any of you remember the Palais which I think was in the market area and the Astoria which again I think was in the area which now is around the Broadmarsh shopping centre.
Much of my youth was spent in those places, also the Commodore in Aspley.
Such happy days.

Lynne59 Sun 13-Jan-19 18:43:37

I do Zumba 3 times a week and I go to Salsa lessons. I love both - they're good exercise, and a bit sexy grin

Lynne59 Sun 13-Jan-19 18:45:10

annsixty...I used to LOVE the Palais, in the 1970s. Tiffany's was good, too, and Annabelle's. I know Aspley weel but don't live that end of town these days.

annsixty Sun 13-Jan-19 19:01:41

Thankyou Lynne but I was way before your time.
I am talking the mid 50's to the mid 60's .
I am sorry that I missed Annabelle's and Tiffany's , I am sure I would have enjoyed them.
My D was there in the early 80's at Uni and Rock City was the venue of choice.

When younger I used to long to go dancing but DH not interested. At school when it rained and we couldn't go outside for sport we did barn dancing and ballroom dancing in the hall to a wind-up gramophone. This was an all-girls grammar school and as I'm not very tall I always got the female role so learnt the female steps. My taller friends all learnt the male steps grin

As soon as I was old enough I went to the Court School of Dancing. We had barn dances at church and I loved them.

bikergran Sun 13-Jan-19 20:05:11

Linedancer here... smile..(now where's my boots) hmm

bikergran Sun 13-Jan-19 20:05:56

Linedancer here, now wheres them boots! hmm

mancgirl Sun 13-Jan-19 23:12:34

Oh, I love a dance. Mostly in the kitchen now but Christmas parties and weddings etc see me straight on the floor. Who can sit when you hear Out on the Floor and other northern soul songs or Tamla Motown, oh so many, feel like dancing right now - but 6am start with a 1 year old and a 3 year old tomorrowsmile, next time!

Jalima1108 Sun 13-Jan-19 23:24:48

There was a heap of Jimmy Shand records, 78rpm's
My friend and I used to listen to those when we were teenagers!!

I do like a bit of country dancing - we used to do a lot of that at school, English, Scottish - and we sang a lot of traditional songs from all over the country too.
It's much more fun trying to 'strip the willow' with a lot of other unco-ordinated folk colliding with each other than attempting a graceful quickstep.
