Tinned fruit?
I have just done an online food order and one of the special offers that came up was
tinned pears.
I can't remember the last time I ate tinned fruit of any sort.
It reminds me of Sunday tea with the Aunts, peaches and evaporated milk after tinned salmon and lettuce with salad cream

Sounds a bit daft, but I had quite forgotten these tasty puds with tinned fruit from childhood. Mandarins and custard is delicious or peaches and custard. I know what is going on this week’s shopping list! ?

this has brought back memories. My mother used to spend ages with the hand rotary whisk beating some condensed milk and it would end up wonderfully light and so sweet. usually served on "fruit cocktail"

I love tinned pears but hate the texture of tinned peaches Tinned grapefruit is a lovely breakfast.

What does everyone do with the juice?
Drink it?

I would ask: when did you last eat jelly? (unless feeding young children).
We used to have orange jelly with mandarins, lime jelly with sliced banana and red jelly with fruit cocktail_height of sophistication- in rotation for Sunday teatime.
Haven't eaten jelly for years, since my children were young.

Sounds good Lemon

I love tinned grapefruit but don't think you can eat it if you take statins?? ?

Fennel Thu 12-Sep-19 18:32:40

MissAd - when I use tinned fruit I add the juice of a lemon to the syrup. I often use it as a base for a for a fruit salad, fresh fruit added later.
Grated ginger makes it more tasty.

MissAdventure Thu 12-Sep-19 18:34:04

Oh that sounds nice, fennel.
I love ginger too.

We used to have sponge flan case with tinned fruit cocktail and thr juice was put in a jug to be poured over. Also had a wonderful pud called fluff. Melt jelly in usual way, when cool and slightly set, whisk in a tin of Carnation Milk then allow to set. Pink fluff made with strawberry jelly was good. It is a dessert that can be made completely from the larder.

MissAdventure Thu 12-Sep-19 18:44:29

Oh, I might have a go at making that! smile

You're right about grapefruit and statins, Carillion. I try not to enjoy mine in front of DH, because he used to love grapefruit and can't have it now.

Yes, tinned pears and tinned nestle cream...

grandma60 Thu 12-Sep-19 20:50:31

I love Sainsbury's breakfast apricots with porridge or on cereal.

SirChenjin Thu 12-Sep-19 20:53:36

Can you still buy Nestle tinned cream?? I love that stuff smile

BBbevan Thu 12-Sep-19 20:57:18

My grandma used to give us an upturned half of a tinned peach surrounded by evaporated milk, and say it was a fried egg. Loved it.

Sarahmob Thu 12-Sep-19 21:11:23

Haven’t eaten tinned fruit for ages but like you annsixty have memories of it for Sunday tea (along with egg and salad cream sandwiches). Still love evaporated milk.

tanith Thu 12-Sep-19 21:12:11

I eat jelly with fresh fruit in quite a lot, the sugar free one is lovely and with a small amount of ice-cream satisfy my need for pudding.

crazyH Thu 12-Sep-19 21:14:46

This reminds me - I must eat more fruit .

Scribbles Thu 12-Sep-19 21:15:15

Tinned cream? Eurrgh! Haven't had it for the best part of 60 years. It always seemed, to me, to taste of the can it came in. Shudder....

We still have canned pears, apricots or prunes fairly often but never peaches. Something weird happens to the texture of peaches when they're canned. I used to love canned blackcurrants, too but haven't seen them for several years.sad
