flushing toilet in the middle of the night

We have never flushed the toilet in the middle of the night unless its necessary.
We been trying to save the Worlds resources for a very long time, apart from the noise that flushing and the filling up creates.
Now we live in a bungalow,we still carry on the practice.
Do others not flush in the middle of the night or are we the only ones.

I don't flush during the night but when staying away I check the house rules.
One family has the flushing mantra above the pan. If it's yellow etc

When staying in a remote summer house in Sweden, we were provided with a potty to save us visiting the earth closet outside. I was very grateful. There were elks in the woods.

Another non-flusher here as well, even though there's only me and no-one except the cats to wake up. Always wait till morning unless necessary.

We have a light thing plugged in the hall wall socket which comes on automatically in the dark. Enough light to see your way to the bathroom, but no need to switch on other lights. Very useful, had the same one for years.
Now I’ve posted this, no doubt it will conk out tonight!

I always flush the loo. Unflushed loos are horrible. I wouldn't dream of leaving them.

We don't flush unless it is necessary. All in the name of water conservation.

During water shortages, where I used to live, we used to use the bathwater for flushing. And dad put a brick in the water cistern to artificially raise the water level for the ballcock.

jeanie99 Wed 18-Dec-19 01:36:07

It wouldn't occur to me not to flush.
I never realised people don't flush the toilet at night.
I could perhaps understand if the toilet was extremely noisy and you would wake someone up.BUT
What is the difference between day and night, do you not flush in the day, is it once a day, once every two days.
Do you not wash your hands because you are using water.

Elrel Wed 18-Dec-19 01:55:22

If it’s brown flush it down, day or night.

TwinLolly Wed 18-Dec-19 04:21:08

Even with water shortages/trying to save water, the practice of hand washing is essential.

So yes, as some Gransnetters have said "If it's brown, flush it down" but no matter what - wash our hands afterwards, even if it is after a pee. Or if no water - use hand sanitiser (I carry a small bottle with me).

Alexa Thu 19-Dec-19 21:42:33

It's not unhealthy to leave urine in the WC
but it is unhealthy to not wash your hands, especially if you re cooking for others.

Do flush during the day, but do not at night because if I wake up completely when I go the the loo, I can then be awake for three or four hours,

If I can get there and back while still effectively remaining asleep, I sleep so much better. The art is getting up as soon as you feel the slightest desire to have a pee, finding your way to the loo in the dark, doing what you do and reversing the journey back to bed , all without waking. I am really good at it.

I’m giggling away at the deadpan line there were elks in the wood ‼️ Love it, best giggle of my day, thank you Grammaretto!

It repulses me to find the loo unflushed. Really turns my stomach! sad

welbeck Sat 21-Dec-19 16:52:01

well this has astonished me.
no one in my close or extended family would ever dream of leaving a loo unflushed, and any time of day or night, after any usage. it is unthinkable.
ok, making some allowances for those of you who are worried about using water, before this was a concern, what did you do. where did you get this habit from. is it how you were brought up.
now I remember in some houses, the mad dash ahead of a visitor to get to the loo first.
I have got a theory. only about 3 people on here are of my custom and practice. I think we were/ are of working class/ small crofter type background, ie not middle class. am I right. the mad dash to the loo before visitors always happened in middle class houses. I had not realised what the purpose or necessity of it was.
I shall go on flushing.
and by the way if you have no water to wash hands, baby wipes or similar are more hygienic than hand gel, as you dispose of the germs, rather than merely moving them around, covering them over, trying to neutralise them.

MissAdventure Sat 21-Dec-19 16:56:07

Baby wipes are bad for the environment.
They're one of the biggest problems

Going down to DD1 and family, and must say I am so glad the guest room has its own -ensuite and loo. At the last house, we shared a bathroom with grandchildren, and often had to get up for tinckle in the early hours and wouldn't flush as not to disturb- but it always bothered me.

Here in UK I wouldn't flush at night as we live in a flat and would not want to disturb neighbour below.

M0nica Sat 21-Dec-19 17:05:47

No, it wasn't the way I was brought up, but we were encouraged to do this when there were periods of water shortage. perhaps some people on this thread are too young to remember the summer of 1976

I would never do it during the day. At night, as we do not turn the light on when we go to the loo, nobody sees it. First one up flushes the loo.

I find it odd that so many express such distaste at the sight of the results of their perfectly ordinary and normal bodily function. If you have changed nappies why on earth should a loo containing the liquid waste products of family members cause such problems.

PamelaJ1 Sat 21-Dec-19 17:16:56

Water every 4 days for 4 hours.
Who cared about flushing the loo?

PamelaJ1 Sat 21-Dec-19 17:19:04

I know that a few other people on GN experienced this difficult time, never forgot it and are still saving water to the nth degree.
Even though there seems to be a lot of it about at the moment???

Grannyhall29 Sat 21-Dec-19 17:58:49

BBbevan urgh, hope no-one your friend is visiting drops their toothbrush in the sink in the morning, if I found someone visiting me was doing that they'd be banned from staying over ever again, we always flush whether day or night but our toilet is quiet when filling up

PamelaJ1 Sat 21-Dec-19 18:10:42

Just re-read BBbevens thread!

Why?

Alexa Sat 21-Dec-19 18:19:09

Some people on this thread seem to have no experience of having to make do with primitive facilities.

When the economy collapses due to unaddressed climate change everybody will have to adapt to primitive toilets with no water carriage system.

Think about it: the absurdity of using drinkable water to carry away waste matter.

Calendargirl Sat 21-Dec-19 18:21:49

Agree about BBbevens post.
A while ago on GN, someone asked if people did a wee whilst in the shower, I thought that was awful as well, it had never occurred to me that anyone did that. I must be very naive.

mumofmadboys Sat 21-Dec-19 19:11:48

I can't believe people are so sensitive to leaving a bit of urine unflushed in a loo. One person's urine is much like another's. It makes such sense for conservation of water.

Tedber Sat 21-Dec-19 19:56:01

Hands up...am guilty of not thinking about water consumption. Drives me mad when the grand kids don't flush! If my hubby left his pee for me to find in morning I would be furious! Always flush...always have done and probably always will. (not that I have ever thought about it...until...today bahaha)
