Did you have any favourites in the 50s or 60s such as,

‘Does the chewing gum lose its flavour on the bedpost over night’ ? by Lonnie Donegan.

‘Sparky’s magic piano’. Loved it !

My old man’s a dustman.

The Ying Tong song was a family favourite, still makes me think of my lovely late Mum.

Mner Mner from the Muppets was my younger brother’s party piece.

And I bet not many of you will remember this, my husband sings (or sneakily plays through the speakers when he thinks I need torturing) Basil De Farmer from the Basil Brush show. I had completely forgotten it until he played it a year or so ago. The catchy line was, “he was a brave, brave man” roared by a multitude of children... ?

My Lancashire granny used to sing Has Anybody Here Seen Kelly? Kelly From The Isle of Man.

And this ditty:
Is the old home in the same place
Is the same old picture on the wall?
Does father wear the same old trousers
Mother wear the same old shawl?
Have they still got the lodger in the top back room
Still without the carpet on the floor?
And does the old Tom cat still spoon upon the mat
With the ginger can that lives next door?

phoenix - that's another one. My sister and I used to sing it when trying to persuade our parents to buy us a dog. Which they did in the end.
It's also good for singing in 2 part harmony.

Re Maresy Doats---the rest of the song is:-

If the words seem queer
And funny to your ear--
A little bit jumbled and jivey,
Sing Mares Eat Oats
And Does Eat Oats
And Little Lambs Eat Ivy.

I Iove the Flanders and Swann song about the sewer men--I think it's called "Down Below", also the one about the weather---it starts "January brings the snow, Makes your feet and fingers glow", goes through all the months of awful weather, then ends "Bloody January again!"

The Hippopotamus song by Flanders and Swann

Chorus:
Mud, mud, glorious mud
Nothing quite like it for cooling the blood
So follow me, follow
Down to the hollow
And there let us wallow
In glorious mud

Hang on the bell, Nelly. Hang on the bell
Your poor daddy’s locked in a cold prison cell.
As you swing to the left, as you swing to the right,
Remember, the curfew must never ring tonight!

and the Billy Cotton Band Show song that substituted 3 drumbeats for a mysterious ‘something’
E.G. Get out of here with that boom, boom, boom and don’t come back no more!”
Also from that show, The Stargazers singing “I see the moon, the moon sees me.
Down through the leaves of the old oak tree.
Please let the light that shines on me,
Shine on the one I love”. etc

The runaway train went down the track and she blew!! Great favourite

Helennonotion Fri 20-Dec-19 22:02:42

Oh and Tiny Tim! Tiptoe though the Tulips! That was seriously odd!

Helennonotion Fri 20-Dec-19 22:01:19

I loved 'Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini as a child! Damn thats my earworm for when I'm trying to sleep tonight!

Grannmarie Fri 20-Dec-19 21:57:13

We grew up on Delaney's Donkey and Paddy McGinty's Goat!
Also loved the comic takes on the pop songs of the 60s by The Barron Knights.
Do you remember Running Bear? Who sang that?
When I was very young I loved She wears Red Feathers and a hula hula skirt, and Pretty Little Black Eyed Susie, I think Guy Mitchell was the singer. I also remember Starry Eyed by Michael Holliday, I think, and What did Delaware and Catch a Falling Star by Perry Como. Who sang James, James, hold the ladder steady? We didn't have a TV until I was about 8 or 9, so I grew up listening to the wireless, BBC Light Programme and Radio Luxembourg. Great thread, great memories, thank you!

00mam00 Fri 20-Dec-19 21:42:20

How about ’I do like the doggy in the window, the one with the waggaly tail‘. ( Waggaly, not waggly).

NanKate Fri 20-Dec-19 21:18:16

Have we had ‘There was an old lady who swallowed a fly’ ?

lilydily9 Fri 20-Dec-19 21:08:26

I had one of those dresses too Maddy! Thanks for reminding me!

maddyone Fri 20-Dec-19 17:45:30

I liked ‘Seven little girls’ too Lilly. I remember singing it with my cousins and sister on Christmas Day. We thought it was hilarious because our uncle was called Fred. We were all dressed in pink, floaty, nylon party dresses, as was the fashion then. I was six years old.

maddyone Fri 20-Dec-19 17:43:13

The funniest one wasn’t quite a song, but a poem with music in the background. It was ‘The lion and Albert’ by Stanley Holloway.

lilydily9 Fri 20-Dec-19 16:22:34

Seven little girls sitting in the back seat (all of them in love with Fred). Always felt so sorry for the driver!

Mollymalone6 Fri 20-Dec-19 15:50:49

cmwmoonshine oh I loved that - so funny - by Ray Stevens. Did you ever listen to his "Indian Love Call"? Such a beautiful song.
