... and planning to be financially independent.
?

Clive Lewis on Question Time says it is racism.

Quite honestly, I do not believe it is racism but there is a schism between what we expect from our Royal Family and the American 'Hollywood' idea of what is required.

JenniferEccles Thu 09-Jan-20 22:46:39

I couldn’t believe it when Nicholas Witchell said on the news that Meghan has already left for Canada.

It was only yesterday they made their announcement, yet already today senior royals are said to be doing all they can to accommodate their wishes.

Why then has she shot off like that?

Will the marriage last? I wonder.

NanaandGrampy Thu 09-Jan-20 22:47:33

So all that talk about not flying to save the environment was a case of ‘do as I say not as I do ‘ ?

Callistemon Thu 09-Jan-20 22:49:10

Oh dear, I thought she was a breath of fresh air, it all went so well at first but since then they have both behaved like divas.

notanan2 Thu 09-Jan-20 22:50:51

She's coming across as someone who starts a row but then wont sort it out because she "doesnt like conflict"

So what happens if H&M have a disagreement?

notanan2 Thu 09-Jan-20 22:52:30

Clive Lewis on Question Time says it is racism.

I dont know.
I liked her at first. I think most people did. She just became harder to like..

Callistemon Thu 09-Jan-20 22:54:53

I just said that grin

See my post above 22:42:10

notanan2 Thu 09-Jan-20 22:57:22

Yeah I'm agreeing grin

Maybe we do all have some subconscous bias... but shes not that popular with my BAM friends or colleagues either any more..

merlotgran Thu 09-Jan-20 23:00:19

My sympathies are with the Queen. This must be deeply distressing for her.

Ellianne Thu 09-Jan-20 23:03:16

Yes merlotgran how does she get to sleep, let alone be fresh enough to face the next day?

bluebirdwsm Thu 09-Jan-20 23:19:58

I do hope the Queen is going to be able to cope with this. She has been a hard working, dutiful monarch for 67 years and now nearly 94 years old. Her husband is not well. Is this the way to treat elderly grandparents? No matter what views people hold on the monarchy this is not fair on any elderly grandmother/grandmother or indeed on the grandfather/great grandfather in their twilight years. Or on Archie who will not know his cousins, aunts/uncles/grandparents.

H and M land all this on her at the end of her reign. It's disgraceful and so disrespectful in the extreme. Harry is a weak fool and will rue the day he met this calculating woman if he hasn't already.

It seems she is asking Harry to choose between her and Archie and his family. She has now left him behind to face the music and sort things out if he wants to see his wife and son any time soon.

I could say a lot more but I'd better not...

Ellianne Thu 09-Jan-20 23:28:46

bluebirdwsm as I now see it Meghan is asking Harry to choose between her and the Queen. Preposterous!

newnanny Thu 09-Jan-20 23:29:41

I thought only senior royals get tax payer body guards. Princess Bea and Eugenia don't get tax payer body guards. Prince Andrew pays for them himself. Let's hope H&M pay for their own bodyguard s in future. I feel sorry for the Queen who always puts duty first. Megan puts Megan first. She stopped him seeing his friends now it seems his family is to be cut off too.

Callistemon Thu 09-Jan-20 23:31:24

bluebird we thought that he could have waited, or at least eased off gradually.

It seems they want to leave immediately, set up their commercial business and cash in on their royalty.

merlotgran Thu 09-Jan-20 23:35:00

I keep thinking back to that rather silly comment Harry made at the time of their engagement that his family would be the family Meghan never had. Meghan's family were outraged but we were already getting sucked into the idea that it was a family she'd do well to cast adrift.

Less than two years after their marriage, Harry is now in danger of having no family to support him. He's estranged from the brother he was once so close to and has upset a lot of people by his treatment of his grandmother, the Queen.

Meghan has scarpered back to Canada leaving Harry to face the music. What sort of a wife behaves like that? Don't tell me it's because she needed to race back to Archie. She left him as a small baby when she wanted to watch Serena Williams play tennis!

This is one clever, calculating woman and she's nearly there with her long term plan to place herself on a platform that wouldn't have even been there without her marriage.

Curlywhirly Thu 09-Jan-20 23:38:20

I don't think racism has anything to do with it. Meghan was well-liked when she first came on the scene, but she didn't do herself any favours with her behaviour towards her family, then things went down hill from there; she came across as ambitious and entitled (remember her attendance at Wimbledon, where all seats close to her were kept empty, but when Catherine attended, she sat in the middle of a crowd!). Then as a couple they started to make unpopular changes to royal protocol - secrecy regarding where they were to honeymoon, secrecy about when their baby was born and christened and who the God Parents were (what was that all about?!). Then they started to lecture on global warming and our carbon footprint, whilst taking several flights in as many days themselves. The final nail in the coffin was their interview in South Africa, when their sob story regarding their very privileged life just beggard belief when they were surrounded by the terrible poverty of the Africans tbey were visting. They just didn't make it easy to like them anymore.

Daisyboots Thu 09-Jan-20 23:51:00

While I think Harry is a fool l also think he has mental health issues. What worries me is that his wife has run off and left him alone in England to deal with it all and other than staff he has no one to talk to or confide in. She managed to alienate him from all his friends and family so he has no one by his side. In this instance I feel for him.

Rockingchair Thu 09-Jan-20 23:53:45

Apparently Archie stayed in Canada with his nanny so neither Harry or Meghan had any intention of staying here any longer than absolutely necessary. Disgraceful and disrpectful behaviour by both of them but especially Harry

Eloethan Fri 10-Jan-20 00:05:53

I do understand why neither of them feels like staying in this country. The constant criticism of everything they do must be very depressing, even for someone like Meghan who is probably quite a strong and independent character.

However, I do see why some people think they've jumped the gun a bit. Possibly it was because they were afraid of somehow being "persuaded" not to take such drastic action. It could be that they figured once the announcement was made there would be no going back.

I understand their actions but I think it could be a very risky strategy. Meghan is, in a sense, a self-made person - a successful actress who has nevertheless not come from a particularly affluent or influential family. Harry has only known life in a very privileged bubble - most of his life mapped out for him and beyond his control. It could, I think, be extremely difficult for him to adjust to such a change in situation and status.

Added to that, the Queen is still a very powerful person and I don't believe she has been demonstrated to be the compassionate or forgiving type. There was, in one of the newspaper articles today, the comment that Harry and Meghan would certainly "pay for" their actions. That sounded very ominous - kings and queens have, across, the ages, been shown to have a very ruthless streak.

Whilst I understand, and to some extent admire, their bravery in breaking away from "the firm" (and that is just what it is), it's my view that, as many others have said, you can't have your cake and eat it. By all means leave an institution that you have issues with and which is making you feel unwelcome, disliked and unhappy, but don't then rely on that institution for any sort of financial or housing support.

Personally, I would have been a lot happier if some of the other unsavoury characters in the royal family had decided to stand down. Hopefully, one day this outdated monarchical system will fade away.

I hope it works out for them.

pinkquartz Fri 10-Jan-20 00:12:29

But when you consider that their website and the patents for their merchandise was started almost a year ago you have to see this has been a long term plan.

She never intended to stay here.
And I don't think it is about racism......she is a controlling woman and she never wanted anything other than the fame and the money.
Calling us racist is a cop out.
Time will tell if she loves Harry. I have no thoughts on that .

Rosarie Fri 10-Jan-20 00:15:05

I think they went to Canada house to sort out visas

pinkquartz Fri 10-Jan-20 00:19:24

They planned this for a lot longer than six weeks. Brand Sussex was begun a year ago. Meghan is nothing if not ambitious. She had her plan all along. She stirred up the press to use it as an excuse.
She is cunning and clever but not very nice.....

If Harry does get it all his way then there is an opening for a campaign against the Royal Family having so much wealth.....from what i have read Prince Charles is aware of this They stay as they are only by our Good Will.

And there is still the P. Andrew trouble to play out it is not over.

notanan2 Fri 10-Jan-20 01:34:13

Having had US nanny(?s) from the start was comvenient? Or a coimcidence?
It makes the move back easier if the established nanny can easily go...
What do you think?

hollysteers Fri 10-Jan-20 02:57:57

Harry should have carried on his career in the army (and I’m a pacifist) He said himself it’s when he feels the happiest, although I’m not sure Meghan would like it.
It’s a storm in a teacup and could have been handled better; arrangements made behind closed doors. What has happened is the British public are up in arms realising how much we spend keeping people like this on the go, and rightly so.

Lyndiloo Fri 10-Jan-20 04:07:58

I think that Meghan has manipulated Harry into this breach with his family. Such a shame.

However, if they want to live abroad, so be it. But with every decision there comes consequences. I think they must give up their titles, their priveledges, their tax-payer's security and any money from the public purse.

They can't be half-in, half-out.
