The Imp Of The Perverse

Have you experienced, or heard of this?

It's an urge to do something you never ever would, such as stepping in front of a car, or shouting at an inappropriate time, or anything, really.

Apparently its named after something in an Edgar Allan Poe writing.

I often have the impulse to pull the hair of whoever is sitting in front of me on the bus blush

MissAdventure Thu 06-Feb-20 20:58:57

No, I've never been bullied, ever, luckily. smile

ananimous Thu 06-Feb-20 21:02:34

Lucky you.
Now, going forward could you stop shutting down other's opinions if you do not agree?
It does come across as browbeating.
Just give those posters a miss instead of calling them names.
We all just want to have our say, that is it.

MissAdventure Thu 06-Feb-20 21:09:42

Yes of course.
I'll leave the whole thread to you.

merlotgran Thu 06-Feb-20 21:16:49

Bloody hell, ananimous. Do you go round all the threads thinking, 'Oooh allo. Here's one I missed. I haven't had a pop at anyone for while so I'm going in!'

hmm

And before you ask. I haven't been bullied or suffered abuse either.

ananimous Thu 06-Feb-20 21:25:45

@Merlotgran

Are you stalking me?

ananimous Thu 06-Feb-20 21:27:42

Again.

pinkquartz Thu 06-Feb-20 21:38:38

it was a fun thread for a while.......

I am afraid of heights because I always get the urge to throw myself off.

coming off of Clifton Bridge would be like flying for a short time, if you got the right thermals...

merlotgran Thu 06-Feb-20 21:39:01

Highly unlikely, seeing as I was posting on this thread before you arrived.

merlotgran Thu 06-Feb-20 21:41:01

Never mind. As MissA has already said.

You can have the thread to yourself.

Chewbacca Thu 06-Feb-20 21:50:37

What a damned shame such a good thread has been spoilt by one person. angrysad

Hetty58 Thu 06-Feb-20 22:10:08

It must be the imp of thread murder at work - what a waste!

Callistemon Thu 06-Feb-20 22:23:21

Unanimous you may change your name but your style is unmistakeable.
It's getting boring now.

Callistemon Thu 06-Feb-20 22:30:07

I can't say I have felt any of the above but have felt that I could take a hammer to my tablet from time to time!!

Ps if you're all having a meet-up I hope you don't mind if I give it a miss! grin

What a fun thread spoilt. Oh well some people clearly have an urge to spoil things which others are enjoying. Their Imp of the Perverse presumably.
I quite often want to shout in church, that’s mine for what it’s worth. smile

The best course of action by far is to totally ignore anyone who deliberately joins a thread then sets out to ruin it.

I often get stuck behind people walking slowly and try as I may there is no room to overtake them without stepping into the road.

This reminds me of the Mr. Bean sketch of him in a hurry, desperately attempting to get past an elderly man walking really slowly down a flight of stairs.

It was funny because there was always the chance that, being Mr. Bean, that the old chap would have been given a hard shove.!!

Yet your first in the queue to insult me on my thread grin
You have a confusing set of standards...

Jane10 Fri 07-Feb-20 14:33:29

Oh go away. You're spoiling the thread.

I regularly want to snatch peoples mobiles of them and tell them to finish eating/acknowledge their children/and use the bluddy knife and fork you common b`stard.
I did however tell a man who was shouting at his wife and she was looking frightened that you are nothing but a bully and you should be ashamed of yourself.
Then told her I know how you feel as I was married to a tw.t like that and I left him.

Ninarosa Fri 07-Feb-20 16:19:58

Quite the opposite I'm afraid, Curlywhirly. My Dad had a series of not very well hidden affairs during his and Mum's long marriage. I recall one occasion when we all woke up on a Sunday morning to the sight of Dad's regulation issue grey pit Y fronts draped across our front gate , for all the world to see. An irate husband had caught him red handed (?) S servicing his wife , and given him a black eye and chased him off without time to gather his kecks.
I think my outbursts were my childish way of showing my dislike for him. I was sent down the garden to retrieve those pants, and boy, did I take my time !

Anyway I've learnt the meaning of 'The Imp of the Perverse' and I will mention it in intellectual conversations! grin

SarahCGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 07-Feb-20 17:10:03

Hi everyone. It would be great if we got this thread back on track - it started off as a fun, light-hearted conversation and is turning into a bunfight. Thanks, GNHQ.

Eglantine21 Fri 07-Feb-20 17:15:08

Then, perhaps, do something about the regular “spoilers’ Sarah ?

Callistemon Fri 07-Feb-20 17:26:47

I agree.
They are not bunfights, they are deliberate attempts to derail threads and attack other posters for no reason other than being deliberately perverse.

Jane10 Fri 07-Feb-20 17:30:05

A bunfight is a schoolboys tea party. One of those words whose usage has changed. #pedantalert!
