The other day we were thinking about what makes a person charismatic. We could think of several men - some of whom I don’t like although I can still accept that they have charisma . But when it came to women I was stuck.
Who do you think is charismatic ? Can you think of a woman who fits this description ?

Oopsminty, he was definitely the man de jour, among women of many age ranges, at least within my friendship group. Age 30 and up. There was much discussion of 'I would, would you?'

Thought of some others.
Helen Mirren
Ian McKellen
Kevin Mcloud (Grand Designs. USED to have it but has lost it now.)
Idris Elba

Horses for courses, GagaJo!

Idris Elba?

Now you're talking!

GagaJo Thu 13-Feb-20 21:47:47

Yes. He should definitely have been the next James Bond. For that I might have bypassed my dislike of the genre and watched him.

Took the words right out of my mouth

I'm no fan of Bond but would most definitely have watched if Idris was featuring

JFK and Jackie Kennedy certainly did

I think charisma is not necessarily a subjective quality. I would define someone as having it if they walked into a room and everyone feels it, stops and looks. Whether they like the person or not.

There are a few people I can think of to whom others tend to gravitate but I can't think of anyone with real charisma who is alive at present.

Robbie Williams maybe.

GeorgyGirl Fri 14-Feb-20 14:12:02

Kirsty Young

paddyanne Fri 14-Feb-20 14:15:36

Sorry Jackyb I think Robbie always comes across as very self absorbed and fake .Its not a looks thing or even a personality thing as far as I'm concerned

Chestnut Fri 14-Feb-20 15:55:23

Auntiflo - Greta Thunberg??? ? She has about as much charisma as a plastic bottle. She always looks angry and miserable, I can't bear to look at her bitter little face. I appreciate she has garnered support for her cause amongst young people but this isn't charisma, it's from frightening the living daylights out of them.

NotTooOld Fri 14-Feb-20 16:07:38

Ooh yes, Brian Ferry definitely.

Terence Stamp - remember him as the soldier in Far From the Madding Crowd?

Jimmy Nail - not the Oz version but any other version.

Hugh Jackman.

Agree with Chestnut about Greta Thunberg.

I think some peoples definition of charismatic is different to mine. Years ago when I was a young solicitor practising in East London I often came across Gareth Pierce, in fact we co defended on a case of conspiracy to rob. She is and was an extremely accomplished lawyer but was very serious and dry.
There were some charismatic lawyers in those courts, I wonder if any of the regulars at Stratford East/Stratford West/Barking/Redbridge/ Tower Hill and Walthamstow are still around?

One of the reasons that was one of my favourite 1960s movies (another thread). He was soooo beautiful. But is that charisma or just gorgeousness?

In reply to QuaintIrene some posts ago, I did meet Margaret Thatcher, not just met, as in shook her hand, but spent an evening in her presence at the Chancellor of the University of Buckingham´s dinner. She gave me some valuable advice, while we were waiting to use the (only) toilet, she said that she had learned to go (to the toilet) when there was an opportunity rather than when she really needed to go. I have used this advice ever since and am eternally grateful. She did have charisma. Otherwise, I don´t think you can really tell with actors and people you only see on TV. My husband´s best friend has charisma, draws people to him, is incredibly funny and entertaining, a manipulator in my opinion, and a serial adulterer to boot.

Of course, I found PolyEster very charismatic, but I wouldn't expect anyone at all to agree.
