Money talks. Or hopefully not.

If you haven't watched the programme "A Very Yorkshire Brothel" I would advise you to watch it. It actually allows some of the sex workers to speak and the atmosphere in the brothel is totally unlike anything you would expect. I had always imagined sex workers as being damaged and exploited, the women on this programme changed my mind. Of course there are horrific situations, women forced into it and severely at risk but if they choose to be sex workers and are given proper protection some of them seem to be very together and happy. When women have limited choices I don't see why anyone should make those choices even more narrow.

I have watched a very british brothel presumable from the same producer and saw the supposedly self employed making choices women discuss having to have sex with customers that really made them uncomfortable, and how frequent that was.

Also, all those women werent employed but having to sit there for hours on a rota waiting for a client. No employee rights but couldnt just sod off if business was dead

And then theres Michael Jackson and his children

Greymar Sat 15-Feb-20 17:23:52

Well said suzie, something to think about without silly name calling and so on.

I heard Tom Daleys partner on the radio, and I didn't care for what I heard.

suziewoozie Sat 15-Feb-20 17:27:23

It would have broken my heart if my dd had ‘chosen’ to be a sex worker. All women are worth more than that.

The statistics relating to child sex abuse survivors and prostitution are something else to consider when we are discussing choice.

Anniebach Sat 15-Feb-20 18:23:23

What statistics?

Greymar Sat 15-Feb-20 18:24:46

Surrogacy benefits women....what sort of nonsense is that?

Some woman carries a baby for 9 months, gives birth and hands the baby over. On a personal level I recall being alone with a screaming tiny one and cabbage leaves down my bra trying to alleviate breast pain. It flies in the face of nature and ( for believers) what God intended.

Greymar Sat 15-Feb-20 18:25:53

Oh Annie, go and research them. There is correlation between

kids who survive abuse and drift into prostitution. Is that so hard to comprehend?

notanan2 Sat 15-Feb-20 18:27:40

The "happy hooker"
Yup. Men love that idea.
Sex workers can get a form of stockholm syndrome but if they do retire the damage stays with them

trisher Sat 15-Feb-20 18:29:32

I believe Inuits traditionally left girl babies out on the ice to die if they felt the community could not support them. It was a way of protecting the whole community and limiting the birth rate. Was it "natural" who knows?

Yes it was natural selection, brutal.

Nothing natural about some rich person buying a womb.

Anniebach Sat 15-Feb-20 18:33:23

Surrogacy benefits woman is nonsense GreyMar ?

notanan2 Sat 15-Feb-20 18:34:54

Anniebach Sat 15-Feb-20 18:39:01

Approx 6 women in each country

Iam64 Sat 15-Feb-20 18:39:19

The myth of the happy hooker, of the women who 'choose' to be sex workers is largely just that, a myth.
There is a body of research as Greymar says about the links between children who experience sexual abuse becoming sex workers. Anyone who has worked with sex workers is more than aware of that.
I can't recall the name of the US sex/porn worker who for a long time claimed she was making positive choices. Later in life she said she realised she'd been sexually exploited all her life. She went on to work with sex/porn workers to support them.
Surrogacy carries all kinds of potential emotional difficulties for the child, the surrogate and the parents. Being a parents is probably one of the most challenging things any of us do. Reading the posts on gransnet suggests that continues long after our children become adults and parents themselves.

May7 Sat 15-Feb-20 18:39:53

Thanks for the link notanan2 very informative. Let's hope there's a change in the prostitution perspective. Moving forward into the 2020s

trisher Sat 15-Feb-20 18:42:09

suziewoozie I think there are many parts of society where the morality supported by most on GN is largely ignored. It means shop lifted goods are openly acknowledged and traded. And sex is just another activity undertaken on a whim and sometimes for cash. How much the women becoming sex workers are affected by things may very well depend on how their community views them. And just as you wouldn't want your DD to be a sex worker I don't suppose you would want her shop lifting either. But some places both are usual.

suziewoozie Sat 15-Feb-20 18:43:24

Well annie why not provide some evidence as to how surrogacy benefits women? Evidence you know as in links to serious articles and research.

suziewoozie Sat 15-Feb-20 18:45:47

I think in the great scheme of things I’d prefer my dd to shoplift rather than do sex work. Yeah I know very odd of me. She did once travel on a train without a ticket and I read her the riot act without my heart breaking

Galaxy Sat 15-Feb-20 18:47:57

Do you mean the most deprived areas Trisher.

Galaxy Sat 15-Feb-20 18:48:59

Well she is less likely to get assaulted when shoplifting, so yes I would make that choice too.

Greymar Sat 15-Feb-20 18:49:09

I'm all ears Annie. Really?

Anniebach Sat 15-Feb-20 18:49:43

suzie. A woman can not conceive or cannot carry a baby,
a surrogate has the baby for her .

Unless the surrogacy is only for two homosexuals who want a child
