Government are proposing to bring in a points based system from next year. Immigrants will need a job offer, earn at least £25600 and speak English. A good thing or not

GG, I too had the work ethic firmly rammed home as did my husband. We both worked hard. Our children picked up jobs here and there. Not everybody has a decent home, a good attitude, confidence, back up at home, appropriate clothes and even the bus fare to get to the job interview! We cannot dismiss people as solely unmotivated. Money, power, confidence all linked
There seems to be a very skewed view of value in relation to the workforce, ie all the coalface 'unskilled' jobs seen as valueless, whereas uni/grammar school education, professional career all seen as high value/status. Possibly the roots buried away somewhere in the class system.
Well vegansrock Anyway, it will be interesting to see if all those economically inactive people get off their backsides and take all those low paid jobs and get qualified as plumbers
It’s about time employers here in the U.K. started to invest in our own young people and offer apprenticeships again, instead of taking (to them) the easy option of bringing in ready qualified staff from abroad.
Not everyone is as perfect as you and your family, GG13
Such a mean comment from you MaizieD. Quite unnecessary in my opinion. Would you ever say that to someone socially in real life? I don’t think so.
Try pausing before you hurt someone.
I don't have a problem with our new points based system. There are going to be exceptions for agricultural workers and the earnings limit can be lowered to about £20k for workers in shortage areas. There has to be an earnings limit though because new immigrants will not be able to claim benefits for the first five years they are here, and they will also have to pay £400 towards NHS.
It must be reassuring for car workers in Sunderland to know that there are plenty of jobs picking cabbages in Lincolnshire, if they are made redundant. If they don't fancy that, they could always try care work.
newnanny I don't understand the connection between an earnings limit and not being able to claim benefits. New immigrants have to pay towards the NHS anyway.
Urm such compassion.Maybe you could have a word with quizqueen as well. Thanks everyone btw for your deafening silence re ableism. Guess you’re all happy with it.
I’ve been at the doctors’s this morning sw so I didn’t see the post. It’s since been deleted. Therefore no comment from me.
SW I did not see the post...I a only come to the frum for short times.......as I am disabled I am sure I would have responded.
I know about the holocaust I am Jewish
I don't know who or what is BOBS
The minimum wage is supposed to be going up in April by 50p and I thought then by another 50p each year until it reaches £10.50 per hour. I thought that was said in run up to election by Boris. If minimum wage goes up and benefits don't go up as much there will be more differential between working and claiming benefits. That might encourage more into work. I saw a benefits programme on TV and they said for every hour a person on Universal Credit works they lose 60p off their benefit. Some on Universal Credit might think it is not worth working if only gaining 40p in pound.
Of course not Urm you wouldn’t believe me and the three other posters would you? We’ve made it up that she was disgusting about people with physical and mental disabilities. You could say, if you believed it, that there is no place on GN for ableism and that you’re sorry this seems to have happened on this thread.
BOBS is Barneyoldbat
@growstuff the link is if workers were able to come to UK and only have low earnings they would not be able to afford to live as would not be able to claim Universal Credit including housing benefit for 5 years. That is why we need to have an earnings lower limit. In addition to paying NIC new immigrants are also going to have to pay a work permit of £1200 and £400 annually towards NHS. This is because they have no history of paying into NHS. Also goverment will not pay child benefit for children living in other countries any more.
No it doesn't newnanny. If people in work are claiming Universal Credit, their benefits will decrease as minimum wage increases. The majority of people who benefit from the increase in minimum wage are second wage earners working part-time, who don't need a full-time job because their partner earns enough for the household. Not only that, but one in seven workers is self-employed. If they are claiming means-tested benefits, they actually lose money when the minimum wage increases. For some, it could mean that trying to earn any money isn't worth it.
Well this IS what Brexiteers voted for, in the majority. Let’s hope they don’t need a carer, or a nurse or their 5-a-day.
newnanny If they don't have a job, they can't stay anyway.
The work permit and cost towards the NHS is already affecting recruitment of teachers. The UK already has a chronic shortage in some subjects.
… and they don't mind their children and grandchildren being in huge classes.
My favourite curry house cannot recruit young staff. ???
Nearly all the children of the ageing staff are training as doctors or dentists. Local white yoofs won’t work the hours.
Save my Curry House ?
Australia struggles to attract hotel workers doing such jobs as cleaners, room attendants, laundry room staff. The unemployed are often drafted into this type of work, but don’t want to do it and don’t stick it for long.
Foreign students and agency workers are frequently employed for these jobs.
Actually, Ug, I probably would say it to someone in real life. Fortunately I don't often come across people with these attitudes.
But I don't set myself up as Mrs. Nice on here...
I don't think it's the education system that's at fault Grandad
I have to disagree there, Maizie.
New Labour made it quite obvious that the only education of value was a university education resulting in a degree and skilled or semi-skilled jobs were a second-rate choice.
Then, as a consequence, degrees were devalued and only a Masters or doctorate would suffice.
Some younger people we know who decided to go for vocational training and did not go to university have, in fact done extremely well in their chosen field and several now own their own firms and have taken on apprentices too.
But no doubt their teachers regarded them as failures when they left school.
Approximately half of 18 year olds don't go to university. The UK has a poor record of knowing what to do with people without academic qualifications. The new apprenticeship system is a shambles and, at last, has been shown for what it is - a waste of money, with most of it going to older people already in employment. A lady called Alison Wolf has been brought in by the government to overhaul it, so hopefully there will be some improvements. Don't blame New Labour for that! The Conservatives under Cameron didn't have any experience of people without lower academic qualifications and didn't know what they were doing.
Callistemon - sorry to have to agree on your point above about New Labour and Uni degrees. Many of which gave no guarantee of future careers. At the time I thought it was just another way of keeping the unemployment figures down.
I've written before about our oldest GD who got an apprenticeship as an industrial electrician and now, at 22, has a steady job and a good salary.
And she has her own house.
