Shrove Tuesday is over. Now it’s Lent.

Religious or not, denial and willpower is considered to be good for us!

Wednesday 26th February until Thursday 9 April.

Might you (a) be giving something up or (b) plan to add in some good deeds to your lifestyle?

I’m having a think about it tonight ....

I thought Lent only ended on Easter Sunday not Good Friday.
I am hoping to give up chocolate, biscuits (love the broken ones one buys in boxes) and alcohol.

I will try not to curse, especially at the continuing cold, wet and grey weather.

I will reflect on what I can do to support others, especially the homeless.

Faith is something I rarely talk about. I always try not to dismiss the faith others hold dear.

No - I have never really understood why self denial is such a big thing - pity that it wasn't mandatory to do an act of kindness each day instead!!

Dot - is isn't mandatory to self deny, any more than it is to do an act of kindness each day. Many people use the discipline of Lent to try to do exactly that, to be more kind, generous and less critical of others.

I give up my new year resolutions.
Every year.

LancsLass, yes, Easter Sunday

Oh dear, I have been rather critical of others today (not anyone I know).

However, I think I will try to do something positive for charity each day rather than self-denial

No I'm not giving anything up, I always fail and then feel worse than before.

Urmstongran did you decide what to give up?

I give up buying any new toiletries during Lent, which helps makes me use up the collection of half used bottles of shampoo and shower gel etc cluttering my bathroom. Anything I really don't like by the end of Lent gets given away or disposed off, as part of the subsequent Spring clean, and I make a small donation based on the amount I' estimate I' ve not spent on toiletries to a favourite cause. If I feel I have been really successful, I then treat myself to a new bottle of my favourite but very expensive shampoo.

No. Whether you are doing it as a Christian or not surely the point is to do it without the fanfare?

I shall try to say the Stations of the Cross daily instead of giving anything up.

I see the Pope thinks we should stop being unkind to others on social media for Lent.
Does that mean we can go back to being unkind when Lent is over ?

Definitely not.
