Married at 20 but that didn't last. Married again at 29, after living together for 4 years, first son at 31, second son 20 months later. Loved being with them when they wee small, before going back to work part-time.

So sad babe, my first at 17 , my mom was very supportive, unmarried as well, like you married the dad , but it didn’t last, single parent, but wouldn’t change for the world x

Had my first child at 20 - was considered pretty normal back then. Got married just before giving birth which turned out to be a big mistake. However have two beautiful AC so not all bad.
My sister was 16 when she had her first child. I dont think women were so focused on having it all back then.
I wouldn't have it any other way though. I had loads of energy when they were little. Brought them up as a one parent family but we had fun most of the time. Struggled a bit too!

Married at 22 (husband same age) - first of two children at 28. My own mother was married at 21 - but to an older husband who had survived five years of active service in World War Two and was keen to have a proper home and a family at last.

But she always regretted not having had a few years of independence first, in the days when it was very difficult for many married women to keep their jobs, let alone work when they had children. It was especially difficult then if you had no family living close by to help out.

So we made the most of the fact that the pill was available, which gave us years to work and save up for our own home.

Later families seem now almost to be the norm. Not always good news for the older generation. One of my ACs turned out to need IVF to have my GC and for various biological reasons can now have no more children. The other has a partner who is retraining for a second career and will be in her late thirties before she finishes. Both want a family at some point - - but it does not seem to occur to either of them (in spite of what has happened to my elder AC) that if there are problems later, time may not be on their side.Or that their grandparents will be much older and may no longer be healthy enough to have a role in their lives. Or even be around! [sad face]

27. And was mortified to be described as "an elderly prima gravida" grin

LadyAnn Sat 29-Feb-20 11:39:29

Married at 21 precious daughter born when I was 29. Didn’t want children then changed my mind (so glad I did). Got pregnant instantly. I was called an “elderly prune” nice!

I had my first, and only, child at 31. I married at 26, and we were happy for nature to take its course. Much less stressful than taking temperatures, injecting, etc. I was also happy to be a stay-at-home mum - difficult financially, but so worthwhile.

Married at 23 and had first child at 27. We moved a lot so waited until we were settled. I was a teacher and always said that I’d had enough of children all day. Didn’t want any but then couldn’t get a job on a our final move. Suddenly felt broody and stopped taking the pill and that was that!

Boumas Sat 29-Feb-20 11:58:07

I was just 16 yrs old when my first son was born,18 with my second...23 with my third and 29 when my daughter was born ..Yes I made mistakes ...who doesn't...and yes it was tough but I wouldn't change it for the world..I now have 9 amazing grandchildren and 1 ( so far) great granddaughter.....

Lellyjenn Sat 29-Feb-20 12:23:34

Married at 21. Did all the foreign travel, partying etc., settling into our own house and generally enjoying life until we were ready for a family. Had first child at 28 (labelled “Elderly Prima Gravida” on my hospital notes too!). Second child at 30, third at 32, then finally the fourth at 38.

I noticed that with the first one I was the oldest mother in the ward, but with the second and third I was amongst the younger ones, and definitely with the fourth child I was the youngest mother in the ward, at 38! It just goes to show that women were definitely putting off having families until later in order to pursue their careers in the late 80’s and 90’s.

lindadoughty650 Sat 29-Feb-20 12:34:24

Married at 23, first child at 24, miscarriage at 25. Am now almost 80 and feel I am now at the best stage to be a parent. At 24 I just "did it", whatever was necessary at the time. Not till much much later that I thought about what could have done a better job. But he (son) has turned out very well.

Jess20 Sat 29-Feb-20 12:41:55

41 with my first, second one was not entirely expected at 45. Too knackered to consider any more.

Craftycat Sat 29-Feb-20 12:44:37

Married just after my 20th birthday & had my first son at 22- a month before my 23rd birthday. Had another son nearly 3 years later. Got my tubes clamped at 30 as I knew I would not want any more children- they would not cut them as they said I was too young & I might change my mind! I wonder if they would have said the same to my husband if he had been the one to have the snip.
