Didn't know whether to laugh or cry during first episode of Ch.5's new series.

Am I the only one who spent ages afterwards making resolutions about their appearance knowing that I'll never keep them?

Still, it was fun while it lasted...

MOnica
I SO agree with you.
Why are we made to feel ashamed to look our age?
And why this obsession with looking younger?
I am all for looking the best you can AT ANY AGE.
It’s insidious and vile to be shamed like this.

I’m very envious of all of you saying you look younger. I have a very lined face, partly heredity and partly through being an idiot and smoking for years (gave up about 15 years ago though) I hate looking in the mirror, but hey I’m healthy and I dress well I’m told and am active!

Lucca Sat 29-Feb-20 12:37:20

And sometimes I think I’m one of the only people not have Botox fillers etc when I watch TV......eg Liz McDonald from Corrie...actually she .looks weird.

GagaJo Sat 29-Feb-20 12:45:21

Yes, Lucca, I agree. And it isn't sour grapes, because I don't have wrinkles, other than the beginnings of a couple. Eventually, botox / plastic surgery catches up and they look weird. Sharon Osborne looked great at the beginning of her plastic surgery but now has a very strangely stretched mouth.

I loved watching the transformation. But I doubt these ladies will keep up applying makeup , the farmer is probably too busy up early farming but I hope that on a night out she will make the effort for herself if no one else, because she really looked fabulous , but like the other op said , it would be better to dresser in nice everyday clothes, I doubt she would were an evening gown like that again , but maybe she will , like to think so , I would love to know what the face serum was the makeup artist applied , it looked lively, I want some of that !

I agree with Monica why are we so against looking older.
I am older.
Just the way it is.
I don't love being older but i refuse to feel bad for looking older.

.... and why all this 'lookism?'....... not a peep about keeping the brain alive. Where you go to the hairdressers and the time you spend on your make-up seems a rather boring topic of conversation

How many others here are still interesting conversationalists at... whatever age? How many have well furnished brains?

Lucca Sat 29-Feb-20 13:05:14

I have a good working brain and still teach one class a week etc, but it doesn’t mean I can’t be aware of how I look and take an interest in fashion ?

M0nica Sat 29-Feb-20 13:18:31

Paddyanne I think you have misunderstood the discussion. It has nothing to do with looking or acting old anytime soon or any time ata ll

It is everything about taking pride in appearance while rejecting the desperate search to look younger than you are, as if your chronological age was something to be ashamed of.

A woman of 70 can still have her natural hair colour, be tall and slim and in good health and have the money to dress well. A woman of 70 can be short and plump with white hair, have severe arthritis and dress (very well) from charity shops. Both look and are typical of their age, because there is no typical 70 year old, anymore than there is a typical 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, or 60 year old. At 10 my DGD was in 13 year old clothes. At the same age her brother is in 8 year old clothes.

It is the assumption that is made that all older people want to pretend they are younger than they are, because being old is something to ashamed of and the way older people themselves buy into this trope that makes me so cross.

Seefah Sat 29-Feb-20 13:18:45

I sometimes feel a bit weird because I never think about whether I look young or old for my age. I’m grateful I have no grey hair only because my husband who is 8 years younger looks very young but has grey hair and now people don’t think I’m his mother. I am very careful to look after my immune system, my brain and my sense of humour so I can’t worry too much about my face as well !

threexnanny Sat 29-Feb-20 13:52:47

It looks like at least one of the episodes will be about men which I think is a first? That will be interesting as most men I know don't give any thought to their looks at all - they just assume they all look like George Clooney!

Rosina Sat 29-Feb-20 13:56:27

I do have a couple of friends who are anxious to look younger - it seems rather sad. As for facial procedures - it seems pointless to move your face upwards or make it too rigid to smile properly when your neck is still wrinkly and your hands will give away the years - and so what? To keep smart in both body and brain is surely the best way to be - and that doesn't involve, for me anyway, designer clothes and expensive treatments, but to be well groomed and to keep up with what is going on in the world.

hapgran Sat 29-Feb-20 13:59:54

I used to like Trinny and Suzanne's programme where they showed women how much better they could look with different clothes. I personally think it's all about wearing bright colours and hope people look at them not at my wrinkles!?

Dottydots Sat 29-Feb-20 14:13:39

It's obvious that the producers planned for the two ladies in the show to be shown at their absolute worst to start with, ie awful clothes, miserable expressions, dull hair, etc. This then makes their transformations all the better.

I know that however I try I'm not going to look any younger but I do like to wear makeup and make the most of myself.

Damdee Sat 29-Feb-20 14:23:41

Well said Monica!

BlueSky Sat 29-Feb-20 14:28:59

* Seefah* you made me smile! My DH is also younger than me and I'm pleased he now has a grey beard so we look about the same age! grin

Maremia Sat 29-Feb-20 15:18:22

A quick and easy trick to make you look less faded, if that's what you wish, is to have your eyebrows done. Waxed and tinted. At under £20 every 5/6 weeks, it's worth the money.

Notright Sat 29-Feb-20 15:50:52

Surely its all about doing it for yourself. No need for expensive outlay, except perhaps for teeth, which I have done.
Just be proud of yourself, keep your hair looking good and wear appropriate makeup and clothes. I am 84 and very proud of the fact that I am most frequently taken to be in my 60s.
And stand up straight.

lemongrove Sat 29-Feb-20 15:58:38

A very good post Rosina??????

Both women looked amazing, and although they may not be able to look quite as glam for the future, no doubt will take away many tips from their experience.

Dillyduck Sat 29-Feb-20 15:58:56

It's my 17th birthday today, Feb 29th. I let myself go after my husband did, didn't recognise the face in the mirror, especially the grey hair. Now I'm regularly mistaken for someone 15 years younger, and even my son's sister!!!
It's very simple. Have regular trips to the hairdresser to keep it tidy and the same colour. Have your lashes tinted, and your brows every month, and remember to use a moisturiser, nothing expensive or fancy there.
Then smile so keep your teeth in order too. Wear clothes that suit you, if in doubt buy a book and work out which colour season you are, or get a book from the library by Colour me beautiful. I don't even wear makeup as a rule! Make sure what you are wearing is clean and tidy, and everything goes together. After surgery I have a large belly, so I wear dark trousers every day and pretty tops with three or four of your best colours. Then everything goes with everything else. Give it a go and say thanks for the compliments!

melp1 Sat 29-Feb-20 17:34:06

I would love to see 10 years younger - one year on grin & I 'd have thought that the dental work might have been painful so surprised they were all smiles 10 days on wouldn't have thought the work could have been done in one day.

Aptera Sat 29-Feb-20 19:28:52

I completely agree MOnica. I`m 67 and have a lot of friends (mostly the male ones, it must be said!) who are offended when a helpful younger person offers them a seat on the bus or Tube. We really should get over this youth worship.

Aptera Sat 29-Feb-20 19:35:57

Oops, posted too soon! But we are as a nation fixated on looking young at all costs. Why on earth should I be pleased with myself if someone thinks I`m younger than I am? Surely there`s more to life than obsessing over this sort of superficiality.

Hetty58 Sat 29-Feb-20 19:44:07

I don't place much value on looks. I'm much more interested in what people do and say. We all look old in the end!

While there's nothing wrong in trying to look our best, I'm not daft enough to believe anyone who says I look younger. They're just being polite. They'd hardly tell me I look older, now would they?

MissAdventure Sat 29-Feb-20 19:53:53

There's nothing wrong with not trying to look your best, either.
I find I'm less and less bothered. smile

Its quite a relief now I've given up hope!
