It's easy to panic buy...........

when the supermarket shelves are almost empty!

I have bough extra tea as they were the last two packets, more loo rolls as there were no more on the shelf. Little stock of cat food available, etc

It's difficult to know whether the shelves were about to be refilled or not but they were definitely emptied than normal.

I'm sending dh to Aldi on a wine run later.

Anyone else felt the need to over buy?

Danne Fri 06-Mar-20 11:11:58

I've just been to my local Sainsburys and there are hardly any toilet rolls??? Sorry I just don't get it. If people just bought their usual amount of shopping there would be enough for everyone. So selfish in my opinion. I got home and stupidly told my DH about it and straight away he said "I'm going to order from Amazon" This really annoys me ??

115 got the virus, someone just mentioned

how many, each winter, die of flu! how many dying daily of
other illness`s.. (?)

we are mostly, well not all, obese anyway.. what is it with toilet paper?

as I grew up during and after the war, I always keep a certain supply in anyway, so no, I haven`t been panic buying

HOWEVER,, confession time.. I have bought extra cat food and cat litter... well.......

gillyknits Fri 06-Mar-20 11:15:24

I can’t understand why we’d need extra kitchen roll and toilet paper. Has this virus some side effects we don’t know about!?

Craftycat Fri 06-Mar-20 11:19:06

TBH I think we could live for a month on what I have in my store cupboards. I can make my own bread easily. Only things we may need is fresh milk & veg. I have 3 freezers that could probably do with being emptied & cleaned out anyway.
I went to Sainsburys for a normal weekly shop yesterday & as someone else said only thing not on shelves was hand gel & I had 2 bottles of that before this scare anyway- I have small GC who I insist use it. as a matter of course.
We get all our cat food delivered by Amazon on a regular monthly order as we have 4 cats & it is very heavy to carry.
If everyone just keeps calm it will be fine. I was amazed to see on an earlier post that a supermarket LET one person take ALL there hand gel. They should have got the manager to come & stop him & make a big song & dance about it just to show him up!
Just keep calm & wash your hands!

Craftycat Fri 06-Mar-20 11:19:55

Sorry - their not there!

BusterTank Fri 06-Mar-20 11:20:31

I have been buying extra . Went into Lidl yesterday no empty shelfs . My daughter works in a supermarket and the only panic buying is on hand sanitizer , paracetamol and cold relief medication .

Tillybelle Fri 06-Mar-20 11:24:48

I don't understand it either. I am worried about buying my usual supply of milk however. Normally I buy enough to last a week and because I need it mix it with some supplements I am given to help sustain me, I buy about 12 pints. I am worried that people will accuse me of panic buying but this is my normal purchase.

sweetcakes Fri 06-Mar-20 11:32:11

I had my shop delivered this morning normal shop, delivery driver said it was really busy one person had ordered 12 green baskets full of water why? ?

McGilchrist41 Fri 06-Mar-20 11:36:10

Why hand sanitiser? A good washing of hands is so much better. Ok as a temporary measure but how much are people buying?

Teddy123 Fri 06-Mar-20 11:37:08

Was in Asda Bournemouth yesterday. Definitely panic buying going on here.

Shelves literally half empty!
Absolutely ridiculous ?

Grannyhall29 Fri 06-Mar-20 11:40:28

No I think it's ridiculous to stockpile, my sons father in law went all round their local town buying up toilet rolls

Rocknroll5me Fri 06-Mar-20 11:42:29

I'm finding it really irritating. I have to and want to take my dogs out a couple of times a day - I pop in regularly to the supermarket near park...late afternoon nearly empty, pick up what I need or fancy and newspaper (free Guardian Waitrose if you spend £10 - often worth it) Now there are people with trollies full of water and loo rolls and queues...bonkers.
good time to dig out those exotic soaps - olive and thyme, lovely - that you have been bought as gifts over the years.

Nannytopsy Fri 06-Mar-20 11:44:57

Now that we live rurally, I have built up a good store cupboard of basics. Since this winter has been so mild, it hasn't yet been needed but it is nice not to be popping into the supermarket every five minutes (and buying much more than intended!) as I used to. Cat food and cat litter are something that I do buy in, as he won't eat pasta, rice or chick peas!
Sadly, toilet rolls are on my list for the next big shop! grin

JaneA Fri 06-Mar-20 11:50:07

I needed loo roll - down to my last 2 rolls. Could I get any? Shelves totally empty. Ridiculous. I'm with you gillyknits.

Summerlove Fri 06-Mar-20 11:52:08

I’m with you Doodledog.

I’m lucky enough to always have a good amount in. However, I’ve restocked a few items that I’d have normally waited a few weeks for, like rice.

Lancslass1 Fri 06-Mar-20 11:53:43

Merlotgran.
You have sciatica .
Have you tried acupuncture?
I could hardly walk and couldn’t lie down and although I get the odd twinge now having had several treatments It is so much better .

Lancslass1 Fri 06-Mar-20 11:54:52

Sorry ,should have sent private message to Merlot gran.

Hetty58 Fri 06-Mar-20 11:55:37

Apparently, this irrational behaviour is driven by fear, a need for control and a sheep-like mentality - ('if others are bulk buying, maybe I should too'):

Sainsbury's yesterday, had to ask the assistant was there a reason why it was more crowded, she whispered “panic buying”. It was full of elderly, bottled water, loo rolls huge amounts. Our drinking water is fit to drink are they expecting to have the runs, that is not in the signs of flu. I feel revolted that us elderly are so anxiety and meanness driven or doom ladened, what is it.

Xrgran Fri 06-Mar-20 12:02:13

I’ve been stoked up on all basics for 1 month for a week or so and I can’t understand why you would not.

If you are Ill you will have to get others to shop for you putting their health at risk.I think that’s irresponsible and selfish.

We may need to go and help friends and family at short notice so I’ve also got a full tank of fuel enough to take me to my relatives who are not nearby.

merlotgran Fri 06-Mar-20 12:03:03

Thanks, Lanclass. Our lovely GP who reached for his magic needles whenever I had a run in with sciatica has now retired and I can no longer get it on the NHS. I agree that acupuncture really works but hopefully this bout won't last much longer.

It's my own fault. Last Saturday I popped out to the veg garden to pull up a couple of leeks to make some soup. I didn't bother to put my jacket on, bent over and got a blast of Storm Jorge up my bottom! Twenty four hours later I was paying for it!

I won't make that mistake again. A whole week has been wasted.

Theoddbird Fri 06-Mar-20 12:10:11

Absolutely not. People who are stocking up on everything are just selfish. Just learn to use less loo paper for a start.

Chestnut Fri 06-Mar-20 12:14:44

The toilet paper crisis is bonkers! The supermarkets really should have limited the amount you can buy as soon as they saw people buying dozens of rolls. People need to get a grip and try to think how they would cope without essentials because there is always an alternative.

nipsmum Fri 06-Mar-20 12:16:13

I'm not panic buying but Tesco couldn't deliver large eggs or sparkling water today. I would have thought they could do basic staples .

Greyduster Fri 06-Mar-20 12:18:16

Aldi this morning; only things missing were hand gel, which they were expecting further deliveries of, paracetamol, ditto, and flour was very low. No-one appeared to be loading trolleys up. Plenty of pasta, fresh meat, veg and fruit. Just watched a bloke on the BBC postulating some theory about how many of us are now going to die! His enthusiasm for his subject was depressing! Why are they allowed to fuel people’s anxiety like that?
