On the radio on Tuesday at 4.00pm there is a programme called ‘The Hidden History of the Mantlepiece’.

My Mantlepiece has on it

A small silver elephant
A soapstone elephant
2 small glass ornaments
An American pottery vase with 4 black horses on it.
An old American clock with a glass front with a partridge on it
A much loved family teddy in a bow-tie

What’s on yours if you have a Mantlepiece ?

My mantlepiece is currently leaning like a drunken sailor against another wall, devoid of anything (even dust) because we're painting the lounge - finally! Usually there's a small carriage clock hubby was given upon retirement, any cards received, and its where I leave my watch, specs, rings for safety if I take them off. Ornaments vary as the mood takes me wink

I have a carriage clock that my daughter bought me and my OH for our anniversary many years ago. Also 2 snowbabies, a photo of my deceased mom and dad and 2 Yankee Candles that my daughter also bought me.

Books - overspill from too full bookcases. It says I read a lot, plus cannot bear to part with books (someone else might throw them away)

Not allowed nick nacks dh says they look untidy I don’t
mind his dictates as when I put anything on anything

My aunt's and grandma's mntlepiece had a vast display of pills and medicines. I always said that I would never do that but age is making me gather a few things I have on repeat prescription. I don't put them on the mantle piece though.

I have no nick nacks. We have no mantel piece anyway but have a vase of flowers occasionally on the dressers, and some brandy etc on a nice tray. I dislike clutter.

I keep very few mementos too. We moved house a few months ago and I allowed myself just one box for photos, baby 'stuff', special cards. Everything else is given to charity or other family members.

DH on the other keeps too much.

No mantelpiece but cabinet has lovely handcrafted wooden box my daughter brought me from Canada. A small IKEA clock and heap of knitting accoutrements that I need close at hand.

lilydily9 Tue 24-Mar-20 15:05:43

No mantelpiece just window shelves on which I have some sparkly candle holders and my mother's day cards. A special candle for my grandson, Harry, who flew to heaven 3 years ago and the lego architecture Trevi Fountain that he made for me.

Childs cricket trophies and Mothers Day cards.

lovebeigecardigans thank you for your comment .... A friend bought the cherubs for me from a Far East company that have now unfortunately ceased trading. I’ve had so many people ask where I got them from so it is a shame as they’re such a lovely gift ...

Eighteenth century Worcester blue and white ware with a clock made by my husband's grandfather in the middle. I think it's elegant and lovely but I think my book group found it pretentious and dull!

A load of old tat here.
I suppose that speaks volumes about me being tatty smile

Four candle sticks, one smoky smelly candle, 2 crystal vases, 1 ginger jar, 1 crystal shoe, 2 ceramic shells, 2 Pellegrino soft drink bottles each with a dead rose in it, some rose petals, dust and fairy lights. I can see I am lacking in family photos!

Namsnanny Tue 24-Mar-20 19:50:55

A cobweb
A prized collection of hand made Mothers Day cards given when the children were young.
A large mother of pearl shell. About the size of a dinner plate.
A large ammonite fossil and a small one.

Jellaway Tue 24-Mar-20 19:56:30

No mantelpiece but on a wooden chest : A turquoise china Buddha, turquoise tall ceramic vase, a silver Indian decorated elephant, a miniature Chinese black table displaying a gorgeous mini white orchid.

GreenGran78 Tue 24-Mar-20 20:21:27

Rosenoir I have always wanted a dead fly! Where did you buy it? smile

Musicgirl Tue 24-Mar-20 20:36:31

A clock in the centre flanked by three Royal Worcester child figurines, October, November and December. To the right of December is a small elephant with a Flaming Katie plant then a lamp with a deer on it. To the left of November is an elephant with a baby elephant inside, a small vase with a giraffe on it and a Royal Doulton figurine of a boy with two puppies. There are also two Welsh slate souvenir coasters propped against the wall and three Mothering Sunday cards.

GrammaH Tue 24-Mar-20 20:54:31

A Masons Ironstone clock in the middle with a small Masons ginger jar on one side & a larger on the other. A pair of glass candlesticks. A little black china chicken & a small glass mouse. The banana-shaped Valentine card I gave DH this year. A pair of large glass jars with a string of pretty lights inside - should've gone away with the Christmas decorations but I liked them too much!

GreenGran78 Tue 24-Mar-20 21:05:45

No mantelpiece, but my unit is rather crowded, at the moment, with Mother’s Day flowers and cards. It’s normal contents are a collection of African figures, wedding photo of DH and myself, a family group photo taken when DH was 80, and two blue glass candle holders.

Nannan2 Tue 24-Mar-20 21:25:14
