And I for one will certainly be joining in. Loud and proud. To applaud the NHS heroes and frontline staff

We only heard people from quite a distance, we are out in the sticks but I don't think any near neighbours did it.

I did, my boy is on shift now in London as a paramedic. Last time hardly anyone in his building did it, I hope he hears some applause this time. Although apparently he hasn't had to pay for milk since all this started, shop owners have kindly insisted he has it free of charge.

True urmonstongran.

The weekly clap for all workers also keeps people connected.

We have many people in our neighbourhood who are totally isolating, it have them a chance to wave and smile at neighbours.

BlueBelle Thu 02-Apr-20 20:26:29

Well that was wonderful there were more people than last week and a few fireworks went off everyone was shouting hello to people they ve never spoken to before
It was uplifting not only in the appreciation of the key workers but to bring the community together for five minutes
There was a little boy hanging out a flat window opposite shouting thank you doctors
Very uplifting I can’t wait till next Thursday

My feeling was that it demonstrated real and true support for all employed in the NHS and care but also for all key workers.

It also brought everyone out in a spirit of "we are all in this together", and in that talking to each other across gardens and street. I think for those feeling worried and stressed it provided a great relief.

Lots outside in our road tonight. People at windows clapping too. Whistling and cheering. Our road is normally very quiet. Lovely to see everyone showing their appreciation.

SirChenjin Thu 02-Apr-20 20:20:14

We did it - it was lovely to hear and hopefully it shows all my frontline colleagues, friends and family just valued and appreciated they are by the public smile

Doodledog Thu 02-Apr-20 20:17:08

FWIW, I did go out to clap. I am conflicted about it, though.

I know it's not 'either/or' when it comes to funding etc, but I think that people can all too easily feel that they have shown support so don't need to do any more, and also that I really don't like the enforced 'with us or against us' nature of this sort of thing.

Grandad1943 Thu 02-Apr-20 20:15:33

Really has been wonderfull here in our town tonight. Not only was there clapping, but there were also fireworks and car horns being sounded from vehicles parked in their drives.

It seems to be an action that is growing and certainly not diminishing.

Just wonderfull, real community spirit.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 02-Apr-20 20:11:01

Yep EllanVannin we had fireworks here, live on The High Rd, cars were beeping horns all neighbours were out.

EllanVannin Thu 02-Apr-20 20:08:10

Fireworks here tonight as well.

Marydoll Thu 02-Apr-20 20:07:26

Most of the neighbours in our cul de sac were out clapping tonight. A good few of us are in lockdown and we felt quite united in showing our appreciation, not only for the NHS, but for everyone who is striving to keep us safe, many of them doing it quietly and discretely.

rockgran Thu 02-Apr-20 20:07:07

We've all just done it in our usually quiet little street- just a few minutes but it felt good and everyone was smiling. smile

I'm sorry to disagree, Doodledog a neighbour just across works at local GP surgery, she has been driving all around to deliver meds to local people.

Think this one is also to show support for others that are helping us, delivery drivers, shop assistants etc.

I will be out there to show appreciation for all of them, our local shop have done a fantastic job keeping the village fed, and they wouldn't have been able to do that without the warehouse people, delivery drivers etc.

Doodledog Thu 02-Apr-20 19:45:31

I think that in some ways it is about showing the neighbours that you are supportive. As has been said, the people being clapped for aren't going to know.

It's absolutely not about 'giving 5 minutes a week', but about knowing that if you don't do it people will call you 'miserable', or assume that you have somehow missed the fact that there are people doing difficult and dangerous jobs to keep the country going.

It's posts that suggest things like that that put me off, really. I don't like feeling pressured into things by sanctimony.

Auntieflo Thu 02-Apr-20 19:37:22

I don't know how some people can say " once was fine, but enough now"

What if all the NHS, carers, essential workers, said " OK, but that's it".

How would you like it if you were in hospital and had one day's care?
Or if your bins were emptied once ?
The ambulance staff said, no more?
Or if the care worker looking after you or a family member, said, enough?

Come on, just go and make a lovely noise for the heroes.
You know you want to.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 02-Apr-20 19:25:13

Grandad ditto

GrannyGravy13 Thu 02-Apr-20 19:24:39

Bluebelle ditto

Grandad1943 Thu 02-Apr-20 19:24:31

Stay safe out there Urmstongran. I shall be out there clapping tonight for the NHS and carers as front line staff.

I will also be clapping for all those that are working in the utility industries and those in distribution centres, transport street cleaning and refuse collection. All are essential in keeping what little we have by way of normal life at this time supplied.

Clap for them all, for they all work at heightened risk to themselves and their families in this time of unprecedented crisis.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 02-Apr-20 19:16:55

We have rainbow pictures in kitchen window along with teddies in all other front windows.

We shall be out the banging saucepan lids at 8pm our next door neighbour is a nurse and their partner is nurse manager.

This is a time for showing appreciation and solidarity ?????

BlueBelle Thu 02-Apr-20 19:11:01

What a miserable lot ?five minutes a week to show you appreciate something

‘Cringeworthy’ ‘embarrassing’ what a truly English thing to say

Let’s get out there and give a good old rousing cheer be careful you don’t fall over your stiff upper lip when you go back indoors

notanan2 Thu 02-Apr-20 18:31:49

Its also becoming one of those "movements" that is becoming uncomfortable/derailed.

Ive seen lots of stealtg self marketing going on in the guise of "thanking the NHS"
E.g. if you make a donation of X to be (cost of their product anyway) I will deliver gifts to nhs workers...hmm
And "as a thanks to NHS workers share my raffle which promotes my business" etc

Then there was that GN thread where a poster was annoyed that she clapped because she disaproved of how many times a nurse on het street left the house on their days off etc..

I think leave it alone now. It was nice, once.

Keep the rainbows coming I like them now that I can only walk round the block

notanan2 Thu 02-Apr-20 18:25:14

A one off was okay but its going to be cringey if people do it weekly... especially as energy and enthusiasm fades

I like the window rainbows though

janeainsworth Thu 02-Apr-20 18:19:45

If we did it, the only people who would see us would be the neighbours who live across the road, so I’m not sure how that is showing appreciation or solidarity.

It’s not like going to a Remembrance Day service, when a community comes together to ensure that the memory of the servicemen and women’s sacrifices in WW2 will never be forgotten.

I think we are showing appreciation by being very conscientious about self-isolating, and by being polite and courteous to staff if we do have need of the NHS.

One of the most shocking things I’ve heard is that in the early days of the outbreak, police had to be called to A&E units to deal with people who were aggressively demanding to be tested. Perhaps one good outcome after this is all over might be that people stop taking the NHS for granted.

Scentia Thu 02-Apr-20 17:58:45

I loved the idea of the clapping last week, I think that was enough. I am sure ALL NHS workers would rather people stay indoors, keep their distance and do as they are ruddy told to save lives, than clap their hands for a few minutes a week.xx
