News tweeted by Robert Peston..poor man..hope he gets well..

I read that too notanan

Only those in most dire need will be ventilated, which then gives their own bodies a chance to overcome the virus.

Callistemon Tue 07-Apr-20 23:17:48

I couldn't access that link but have read similar information elsewhere.

Rather a late message, because I have been watching Netflix....

Being in Intensive Care was hideous, probably the worst experience of my life, and I would not wish it on anyone. Given the alternative, though, I am glad that the doctors gave me the chance to struggle through it. I hope there is enough equipment and trained staff in the UK for all those who need it so desperately now.

There isn't in Italy or in America. I think we can believe their doctors when they say that they are having to play God and choose who gets the chance to live. Not a choice between a person who won't make it and one who will, but between two people who might both survive if they had enough machines. An unenviable choice.

Well Fairview & others I'm sorry to say Mr Johnson has been intubated & is on a ventilator & has been for well over 24 hours now.I wish him & every other person suffering from Covid 19 a full recovery.

Labaik Wed 08-Apr-20 01:47:14

You're the second person that has told me that today/yesterday. I wonder what the truth is...

heath480 Wed 08-Apr-20 02:10:47

Just because he is in ICU does NOT mean he is on a ventilator!!

Why do people persist in spreading unfounded rumours?

craftyone Wed 08-Apr-20 06:47:35

His temperature has fallen, he is on the road to recovery. Prayers have been answered smile

Rubbish mis-information on some posts. He was given only 4l of O2, a small amount, a venturi {simple} mask releases O2 at 4l/minute. The norm for ICU is 15 litres O2 as a starting point. Not intubated, no ventilator, just a simple mask like people would be given by paramedics

He will soon be home again and we have a good temporary leader in Dominic

I wish people would quote their sources on here.

Hetty Yes propaganda. I was replying to a post stating BJ and his team were going with the herd immunity strategy in order to kill off the elderly, therefore saving money in pensions. That is propaganda. When it became apparent many thousands would die they changed direction. Sweden are going with the herd immunity strategy and it looks as if their infection and death figures are rising faster now and they will probably change direction. It’s a totally new situation for any government and I don’t believe it’s a case of “oh let’s just kill off the elderly and save a few quid”

Pikachu Wed 08-Apr-20 08:00:44

Herd immunity was the original approach. That is a fact. The policy was only dropped after several reports showed the likelihood that the NHS would be overwhelmed,

That this was a deliberate attempt to kill off OAPs is unlikely, but they may indeed have been regarded as collateral casualties. Luckily more sensible advice was needed, but of course by then the death rate was already rising and the horse had bolted.

considering that scientists were witheld information by china and that that our scientists had to hit the ground running, they are doing a sterling job and the government, very wisely, has been listening to the experts. Sweden will be an interesting case, a control, an experiment. We willl eventually be able to compare our results with theirs, taking into account various factors like ages, lifestyle, race, blood groups etc

Pikachu Wed 08-Apr-20 08:20:28

Blood Group is an interesting one.

Did I read somewhere that those with blood group A are more susceptible?

Pikachu Wed 08-Apr-20 08:21:28

I think China actually showed the way by early imposition of lockdown.

Greymar Wed 08-Apr-20 08:22:16

Sweden is an experiment? For God's Sake.

Hetty58 Wed 08-Apr-20 08:22:18

China has a lot to answer for. If they hadn't just covered up the truth in December, so many lives could have been saved:

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Apr-20 08:23:00

Air quality and survival rate is being looked at. Makes sense.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Apr-20 08:23:28

hetty you sound like Trump???

Pikachu Wed 08-Apr-20 08:24:35

Very Trump-like.

Ellianne Wed 08-Apr-20 08:25:10

Good points craftyone. I for one am watching Sweden with interest.

Pikachu Wed 08-Apr-20 08:26:16

Yes air quality does make sense too. Respiratory issues.

MawB Wed 08-Apr-20 08:26:24

Thank goodness we are getting some balanced sensible posts. There has been too much hysteria in some areas of the media in general and I suppose GN is not immune to that, too many (dare I say) “Chinese whispers” about conspiracies to bump off the economically inactive, too much 20/20 hindsight, too many unfounded rumours, and too many unqualified opinions without medical foundation.
I was on the point of giving up on GN last night because I despaired of the lethal mixture of venom and tosh which characterised some threads. Yes, everybody is entitled to their opinion, but it can be hard to withstand the verbal ding-dongs when we are all as tense and stressed enough as we are.
Age is supposed to bring wisdom, our generation could be expected to show common sense and where we know nothing about a subject, perhaps listen and learn before sounding off.
That’s all really. ?

Pikachu Wed 08-Apr-20 08:29:37

There’s a knack to getting ones point across without resorting to ‘venom and tosh’ I agree.

Of course we are all human and sometimes feelings take over. I’m sure we’ve all said, or posted, something we later regret in the heat of the moment.

Hetty58 Wed 08-Apr-20 08:45:41

If car manufacturers can turn out ventilators, where are the UK firms turning out PPE? It's not being provided, resulting in 'needless death' for workers and patients:

Chewbacca, of course I read the news! I suggest that you take time to read this - from the Doctors' Association:

'We demand to know where this equipment is being produced, in what quantities, and when and how it will be delivered to the front line.'

www.dauk.org/news/2020/4/6/jointstatementdoctorsinuniteppe

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Apr-20 08:53:58

I am very worried over a headline in the front page today. I hope with everything possible that it is proved wrong, once more data becomes available.

“The U.K. is on course to have the highest death toll in Europe. Deaths are likely to reach 3K a day with a total of 66K”

Produced by The Institute for Health Metrics and Evalution

Any one is very welcome to post evidence that this is rubbish. We need it to be rubbish.

PamelaJ1 Wed 08-Apr-20 08:56:30

Hetty,
There is an article on Breakfast as I am typing about a firm that is making visors.
