Should they offer to donate it to a National Health Service charity

Oopsadaisy3 Thu 09-Apr-20 10:06:02

No, they shouldn’t get it at all.

FarNorth Thu 09-Apr-20 10:09:26

Who is suggesting this?

They shouldn't get it at all.

Dottynan Thu 09-Apr-20 10:11:27

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority is expected today to propose the rise.

Pantglas2 Thu 09-Apr-20 10:12:18

And that’s a huge NO from me!

FarNorth Thu 09-Apr-20 10:13:50

In the past, MPs have said that pay increases for them are not in their power to decide, because of this Authority.

That needs to change in the current situation.

It’s not a pay rise - it’s an increase in what they can claim in expenses for working at home. Whether that’s right or wrong is another issue- personally I want them to be as effective as possible at the moment dealing with constituents’ matters re COVID-19 - given that neither their constituency nor parliamentary offices will be working as previously, it will probably mean some expenses that normally come under those headings will in effect be spent elsewhere. There’ll also be savings on travel and subsistence. But either way it’s not a pay rise, it can’t be given away and I don’t know from what source the OP got this blatant piece of propaganda. You have to be joking yeah ?

ValHach Thu 09-Apr-20 10:15:57

Your joking right ?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Apr-20 10:16:00

No pay rise of any sort until they sort out the NHS.

They have to learn that they must be assessed in order to qualify for a rise like all their civil servants.

suziewoozie Thu 09-Apr-20 10:16:30

How easy it is to get people going with fake news - why don’t people listen to the news themselves or check what is clearly a nonsense?

suziewoozie Thu 09-Apr-20 10:17:38

WW you too? There really is no hope ?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Apr-20 10:17:40

suzie I confess to not being a saint, but thank goodness we have people like yourself to tell us.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 09-Apr-20 10:17:41

What suziewoozie said.

trisher Thu 09-Apr-20 10:19:23

Of course they shouldn't get it but actually they already have
The increase, revealed on Thursday, will raise MPs' basic pay from £79,468 to £81,932 and will be effective from 1 April.
Plus they will get more expenses for staff and they have had rises almost every year. While the NHS and public services raises were voted down

Smileless2012 Thu 09-Apr-20 10:20:29

Well said suziewoozie

trisher Thu 09-Apr-20 10:21:24

In case anyone wants to check it for themselves

suziewoozie Thu 09-Apr-20 10:21:47

trisher that’s a different issue not this one.

Urmstongran Thu 09-Apr-20 10:22:08

I’d read it (like you sw).

It’s an amount of money to facilitate working from home. To purchase laptops for staff (but I bet they’ve all got techie stuff). Working from home = increased electricity bills doncha know?

However ‘Some pigs are more equal than others’ comes to mind.

Dottynan Thu 09-Apr-20 10:23:35

It appears it an extra £10000 for home working expenses. Heating, phone bills, electricity

suziewoozie Thu 09-Apr-20 10:24:44

Urm it’s not how I read it - it’s a fact supported by a link ( there are also
many others).

trisher Thu 09-Apr-20 10:25:39

It's a pay rise suziewoozie . It comes in the wake of many others. And an increase in expenses pre- the corona crisis

Blinko Thu 09-Apr-20 10:26:12

These people inhabit a different world...

trisher Thu 09-Apr-20 10:29:03

And now they get another increase. I know of people working from home who won't get a penny. NHS admin staff working from home are using outdated laptops and computers because that is all there is, but MPs get our money to buy new stuff!!!

EllanVannin Thu 09-Apr-20 10:29:21

They'll be lucky grin grin
By the time this lot's finished there'll be no money left in the pot and a recession won't be far away.
