Would you pay a subscription to keep GN going in these difficult times?

Heard that mumsnet are asking for financial help from members ( £5.00 per month subscription or £50 a year )
to help them through the current crisis.
I guess smaller online forums are just as likely to go under as any other business if the situation continues for months.

What are your thoughts?

No, I would not be willing to pay. I dip in and out of GN, and enjoy it when I do, but I think that the way it is set up is very disrespectful to posters.

Things like the inability to edit or delete, for instance. I completely understand that if that ability were there for an indefinite period after posting people could (and would) edit to make others look foolish, but maybe a five minute window so that we could check spelling/typos and for sense would be useful. the opportunity to delete if we change our minds about wanting something to remain in the public domain is pretty fundamental, and again, could easily be offered. I post on many forums where both of these facilities are available, and there are no serious consequences. A note to say that a post has been removed or edited is enough for readers to understand that the flow may have been interrupted.

Also, I am sure that there are very many threads started by people who are basically data gathering. I think that these should be monitored (eg is the poster a first-timer, or someone who only posts asking a question then disappears?) and flagged. I may or may not be willing to give info for commercial reasons, but I would like to be given the option with full awareness of how will be used.

There is no way of knowing if we get PMs. I have more than once missed the fact that someone has messaged me, and by the time I reply it has been weeks, which looks very rude. It is an easy matter to set things up so that we can see if there are new messages, and this has been asked for, but is always ignored.

I believe that there are differences between the facilities on Mumsnet and here, although they are operated by the same company. Why should this be? Again, it seems that we are not afforded the same respect.

Would there be a two-tier membership, with paying posters given different facilities from the rest? I can only imagine how that would go grin. Actually, I think it's a great idea, now I think about it. Someone pass me the popcorn - I may be here for some time!

Blimey! Lara has said three times that the free site would remain. That the subscription would be to have Gnet without the adverts. You're all still threatening to go elsewhere shock

Does anyone actually read other people's posts?

I'd pay a modest sum to be ad-free.

Missfoodlove Thu 09-Apr-20 20:48:50

In 2018 Mumsnet/Gransnet had revenue of £8.6 million.
The revenue is mainly from sponsors and advertising.
As it is currently free to join if the sites future were in jeopardy then yes I would make a donation or subscribe.

The staffing costs were £350k last financial year ?, not including directors.

You may find this interesting. It’s certainly not going down well with the majority of MNers!

trisher Thu 09-Apr-20 20:33:07

I was just thinking that paying someone not to do something seems a bit like paying protection money!! grin

I don't begrudge the founders success. They took a risk and it worked for them and, as it happened, us. There are many who have tried and failed costing the founders their savings and investors their money.

As many businesses have found in recent weeks, the unexpected can happen. If revenues shrink and costs are static, profits can turn to losses very quickly and absorb any cash in the business. In adversity, companies cut advertising quickly and, if your business relies on advertising, it can get tough.

If Gransnet gets through this in good shape, the Directors will have done a good job.

Anyone could have set up Gransnet. The fact is only these people did. Good for them.

Greymar Thu 09-Apr-20 18:53:32

So they are loaded and they won't provide proper assistance during this massive crisis?
Great.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Apr-20 18:35:36

Definitely not a charity.

Directors took a remuneration of £353000 included in which was pension contribution. The highest paid director whom I assume is Ms Roberts Received £251000

Net profit for y/e 2018. £2,221,308 after tax..

Cunco Thu 09-Apr-20 18:16:21

Thanks for the link, LaraGransnet (GNHQ). It was very useful and prompted me to read 'About Us'. For some reason, I connected Gransnet with a charity and I now see it is a commercial venture.

Personally, I am not bothered about the adverts so I would not pay a premium price to have them removed. Although I am drawn to Gransnet from time to time, I find it as aggravating as uplifting so I would not pay to come here.

Testing the water maybe?

NanaandGrampy Thu 09-Apr-20 17:49:48

One thing to bear in mind that this is a very niche site- the target audience here - silver surfers if you wish- have money to spend in a lot of cases and want a particular raft of purchases.

There are very few other sites where this demographic can be targeted so specifically. So we ARE a valuable resource .

Prior to the new laws regarding data management selling our list of emails would have been a very valuable resource.

May I also say, I don't actually think we're being asked - we're being given a heads up :-)

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Apr-20 17:17:28

greymar revenue from advertisers. There is a very small amount other income unspecified.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Apr-20 17:05:36

I’ve no idea tbh

MerylStreep Thu 09-Apr-20 17:02:49

Whitewavemark2
So was it the new team who thought up the idea of the 'lurkers' threads to bring in new blood?
If so, in my opinion it didn't work as we hardly saw any of the 'lurkers' again.

Greymar Thu 09-Apr-20 17:01:02

8 million? For what?

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Thu 09-Apr-20 16:51:54

Hi, hopefully this answers some of your questions. There is also a link to MN's FAQs about the Premium service which may help.
Wishing you all lovely and safe weekends. sunshine

H1954 Thu 09-Apr-20 16:41:04

Errrr! Let me think about that................NO!

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Apr-20 16:35:08

Actually the more I think about it the more I am disinclined to pay, I’d rather during these difficult times put the sub towards the charity helping the nhs I pay into monthly during these difficult times.

rafichagran Thu 09-Apr-20 16:13:38

No.

EllanVannin Thu 09-Apr-20 16:10:01

Mumsnet--turnover and profit will give you the answer.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Apr-20 16:06:55

You can’t find out the turnover for GN as it is incorporated in the company accounts that are registered

Turnover for y/e a little over £8.2million.

That includes GN and MN

Don’t forget that isn’t net profit.

Companies House have the details

Greymar Thu 09-Apr-20 16:02:36

How about the pinned post with helplines and the messaging facility?

What is the annual turnover for this site please? Where can I find out?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Apr-20 16:00:56

ev MN turnover was entirely for rendering of services.

EllanVannin Thu 09-Apr-20 15:57:15

I would have thought that the revenue the phone companies draw in would provide backing for forums ?
