ROAST POTATOES! On a TUESDAY!!!

Deliberate shouty capitals!

Well, he's done it now, this is a step too far!

I've just about got used to the fact he's here all day, albeit mainly in the home office (wfh), and comes down for lunch (who said " I married him for better or worse, but not for lunch?) but this takes the biscuit!

When asked to buy a SMALL piece of lamb for Easter, he bought a whole leg confused at considerable expense.

So, I roasted it, then sliced the leftovers and put them in the freezer.

Tonight I had planned to heat some of it up in gravy and have it with broccoli and mashed potatoes, a tub of which I had in the freezer.

Apparently, that's not quite what he fancied! (I fancy lobster, but can't have it!)

So he said "Can we have roast potatoes for a change?"

A CHANGE? What does he think we had with the beef on Sunday??? (Which I think was only the day before yesterday, but couldn't swear to it)

So, please, may I ask, does this constitute unreasonable behaviour?

The mash would have just needed zapping in the microwave (home made mash, btw, lots of butter and black pepper, dash of cream and a hint of grated nutmeg).

But now I've got to peel, parboil etc, with more damn washing up (we don't have a dishwasher) Humph!

Perhaps I could broker a deal, I'll do the damn roast potatoes if he stops leaving the sodding toilet seat up!

And breathe..........

Yesss...cold roasties dipped in salt, bubble n squeak, bring it on.
You have great taste (bar the spam) ?

phoenix Tue 21-Apr-20 15:44:30

Gabriella* that's brilliant! grin Although I don't think Mr P would ever be thin, he's quite a well built chap (not fat, of course wink) Minnie (cat) seems to think of him as a sort of feline water bed confused when she joins us on the sofa in the evening.

Absolutely love bubble and squeak! Sadly, won't be on the menu tomorrow as no cabbage or sprouts tonight, and have only done enough pots for tonight.

Riverwalk Tue 21-Apr-20 15:50:03

Cauliflower cheese with a roast shock

I hope the gravy is on one side of the plate and doesn't touch the cheese sauce!

phoenix Tue 21-Apr-20 16:00:56

Riverwalk of course it wont! As Mr P is wont to say "Standards darling, standards!"

(Does anyone else sometimes have cauliflower cheese as a side dish with a roast, or is it just me?)

Grandmafrench Tue 21-Apr-20 16:04:30

Pretty damn good, Gabriella
Cauliflower cheese, yessss! But Bubble & Squeak, even more yesssssss! If you have loads of leftovers, especially veggies, and you put them in the fridge or freezer so you can whip 'em out (God, I sound like that simpering Nigella!) like magic and serve up further delicious meals, everyone's pleased and you can quickly hurry back to sofa surfing and doin' nuffink in a seamless way - never breaking any rules for the new CBA Club!

Grandmafrench Tue 21-Apr-20 16:06:02

No, we don't Phoenix but only because we possibly might not cope with the excitement. But see previous post for just how much we love Cauliflower cheese.

SirChenjin Tue 21-Apr-20 16:13:14

All this talk of lovely food is making my tummy rumble - I’m very jealous envy Mr Chen’s offerings for dinner tonight are definitely below par.

YY to cauliflower cheese as a side dish - it’s a firm favourite here, even with the 13 year old who is still quite suspicious of vegetables.

Pittcity Tue 21-Apr-20 16:14:28

I love cauliflower cheese and mash but DH won't countenance either....

phoenix Tue 21-Apr-20 16:24:15

Grandmafrench that was my plan with the frozen mash, but it all seems to have gone terribly wrong!

Pittcity love both, but would never serve them together. Although I'm guessing that's not what you meant?

Mr P has been known to do an amazing cauliflower cheese, with onions, bacon and mushrooms added, meal in itself, def not a side dish. Although a few chips with it don't go amiss!

Toadinthehole Tue 21-Apr-20 16:30:25

I would say pop to the shops and get frozen roasties, which I discovered just a few months ago, and are actually quite nice!, but I think popping to the shops is a thing of the past at the moment. Your dinner sounds very yumptious, he should be grateful or cook something himself. Of course, that could be far worse, but you know him best?

This is a useful question:

*Just What Part Of NO Don't You Understand?"

grandtanteJE65 Tue 21-Apr-20 16:37:10

Have you considered going on strike?

Or teaching Mr. Phoenix to cook?

If you decide on the latter, buy a set of cheap pans and knives before starting the cookery classes.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 21-Apr-20 16:37:22

We have cauliflower and cheese sauce as a vegetable with roast dinners phoenix it’s one of my favourite non negotiable Sunday must haves!

Urmstongran Tue 21-Apr-20 16:48:40

Great poem there Gabriella ‼️
Obviously a woman of hidden talents.
?
Mind you, I’ll have to think of you as ‘that quenelle woman’ from now on!
I’m not posh ... I had to look it up.
?

Purpledaffodil Tue 21-Apr-20 16:49:44

Two suggestions Phoenix
1. Hasselback potatoes, small potatoes sliced downward on a wooden spoon so the cuts don’t slice up the potato. I roll them in a little oil and roast at around 180 degrees for around 40 minutes. Looks fancy, no peeling, no parboiling faff.
2.Tell him if the lid isn’t down when flushed then viruses can come roaring out in the droplets and get you. It’s taken me 50 years, but this convinced Mr P to finally put the lid down. Silver lining imho.?

phoenix Tue 21-Apr-20 17:08:03

Oh dear, what a can of worms I have opened!

Mr P doesactually cook. In large quantities.confused

We hadn't been together very long when I came home and found every pan I owned full of chilli, bubbling away on the hob.

He had cooked 2.5lbs of mince, 3 cans of tomatoes, 3 cans of kidney beans. I didn't have a freezer. The fridge in my little rented place didn't even have an ice box/freezer compartment!

Shame it wasn't Harvest Festival time, we could have made a considerable contribution to a harvest supper!

Purpledaffodil thank you, too late for today, but will bear it in mind!

Grannygravy phew! Not just us then! smile

GabriellaG54 Tue 21-Apr-20 18:26:56

I, for one, certainly do have cauliflower cheese as a side to roast dinners (although a veggie, I have in the past and do cook meat for visitors/family) and I've had it in the NSE&W of the UK.
Gravy is poured over certain components of the meal by the diner.
Yummy.

GabriellaG54 Tue 21-Apr-20 18:30:03

I watch far too many cookery programnes Urmstongran, that's my excuse. ??

Starblaze Tue 21-Apr-20 18:42:46

No. Roasts that aren't one Sunday must be either on Christmas day or Wednesday. It's the law. Have him arrested.

merlotgran Tue 21-Apr-20 18:47:07

phoenix, At the beginning of Lockdown I made sure I had a couple of bags of good old Auntie Bessie's finest just in case Mr M should have the audacity of asking for roasties on any other day but Sunday.

I think/hope he's forgotten all about them.

BTW was that can of worms lurking in the back of your Corona cupboard?

#veryniceontoast

SueDonim Tue 21-Apr-20 19:43:35

I hate roasties. Not the objects, but the term. confused It’s so twee, yet sometimes I find myself using that very word. I am full of self-loathing when I realise what I’ve said. grin

Callistemon Tue 21-Apr-20 19:53:37

Mmmm cauliflower cheese.
What a good thing I've just eaten a healthy stir fry, otherwise I'd be rushing into the kitchen to make some.

Tangerine Tue 21-Apr-20 19:57:32

Brilliant poem, Gabriella.

phoenix Tue 21-Apr-20 20:03:19

Sorry, we have tried Aunt Bessies roast potatoes, and as far as we are concerned, she can keep them!

Have on occasions bought ready prepped fresh ones (Morrisons) and they were ok.

SirChenjin Tue 21-Apr-20 20:35:14

Aunt Bessie got her frozen mash spot on but you’re right phoenix, she needs to go back to roastie school - bleurgh
