Are people dieting for when lockdown ends?

I only ask this question because when we went to Morrisons a lot of the dieting type foods were missing or the shelves were very run down. As some of you know DH and I have been losing weight for a while and whilst recently we've had problems getting our tinned pulses, there hasn't been an issue with sweetner and other 'diet' foods. In fact it's been easier because most people seem to have been on a treats binge. This time we couldn't get any own brand (cheap) granulated sweetner and had to pay for a brand sad. Also healthier snacks seemed to be in short supply. I wonder if people are preparing to go out and worried about how much weight they've gained.

I started the thread ‘I’m a Pear’ and ‘I’m a Pear the sequel’ 2 years ago this coming Friday, VE Day. People have come and gone but we have a core membership who help each other through the ups and downs of weight loss.

We realise that we have a choice when we come out of Lockdown as to whether we have lost or gained weight and although we all have off days and binge days on the whole we are a great bunch of Losers ?

What I cannot understand is why DH - who is overweight- has lost over a stone during these last few weeks & my weight hasn't shifted at all.
He is not at all active whereas I am- he eats all sorts of mad things ( crisps, chocolate, biscuits, fizzy drinks etc.) & I don't.
It is just not fair.
I suppose it is all down to hormones or something.

Food seems to have become one of the main interests in this house, the getting it, preparing it and eating do take up some of the long days, however, we are also walking a lot more and further than usual so just hoping for the best.

Gabriella you are not more likely to get Covid 19 if you are overweight. You are more likely to be seriously ill or die from covid 19 if you are obese and get it

I'm like a couple of others on here. ... I've out on weight ?.

crimpedhalo Sat 02-May-20 10:44:08

I'm afraid this is me...so I've got to get a grip with the food intake. ??

I wish I had the willpower and motivation. I live alone and eat through boredom and for comfort. I recognise that this is a problem and was put on a waiting list last year to see a therapist for CBT. Goodness knows when that will happen now! I’ve learned more about my attitude to health, exercise and diet these last few weeks and, to be frank, don’t like what I see very much.

No not dieting either.
I have an 18 year old step daughter who has Downs Syndrome and we have to watch her weight.
We/she buys diet/low fat cereal bars/ etc.
When shopping with her we noticed there was a massive shortage of the asaid items, but apparently people are buying them incase there is a bread shortage and they have a long sell buy date and ther are a substitute just incase.
That is what i was told by staff in Sainsburys and Tesco`s.
And that is clearly the case as it makes sense.
I don`t fancy egg on cereal bars myself haha.

Urmonstgran really not even a walk round the block in Spain? That must be the strictest in Europe! Sorry to be nosey but have you got your place there? Then there's not much else to do but eat!

oldgimmer1 Sat 02-May-20 10:59:47

I'm finding it easier. I'm WFH so not getting home from work hangry and likely to eat anything in my path.

However, come 9pm, I'm gasping for a stiff drink. I don't normally drink alcohol much but a stiff Vodka Slush has become the highlight of my day. blushshock

I’ve gained half stone in weight since lockdown. This is partly due to overeating and excessive snacking on crisps and chocolate. If I was to be entirely honest the weight gain is probably more down to over indulgence in alcohol and inactivity. I’ve found myself sitting around more on iPad and watching movies on Netflix and Prime. I’m not bothered as I feel many have turned to comfort eating and drinking too much when it is not the norm. I’m vegan so still manage to eat my daily requirement of fruit and vegetables. My main meal is always healthy. I’m not doing anything or worrying about losing weight until life gets back to whatever normality lies ahead for us. I think we need to be fair to ourselves in these troubled times and use whatever coping mechanisms we find helpful....

FarNorth Sat 02-May-20 11:26:46

You're right, Mimigirl. We need to be kind to ourselves.

I tend to go off food if I'm stressed, so I'm eating smallish amounts of reasonably healthy food.
If I'm only a little bit stressed, I go for the chocolate and biccies, but that's not the case just now.

My neighbour, who is a nurse, has been telling everyone she can to NOT get overweight during lockdown (or to lose weight if they already are) as being overweight is a risk factor for serious complications or death (at any age) if a person catches Covid-19. (And looking at the photos of those who are younger who have died, that seems to be the case). So, perhaps the message is getting through and people are starting to diet? Either that, or as someone-else has said, they're not considered priority in food shops (and doesn't THAT tell us something for the future ??)

Brigidsdaughter Sat 02-May-20 12:22:21

hendenali your post struck a chord inside me. I've been thinking of going to La Palma.
Plus your walks sounds so wonderful and good for the soul. I walk most days now - unless unwell- and enjoy being in a FB group called 'Walk every day for a year 2020'. I think you'd enjoy it!

Good for you on losing that half stone too. It doesn't sound much but makes such a difference. I put in on unfortunately

Brigidsdaughter Sat 02-May-20 12:34:16

.salsaqueen I looked up your meal plan as I hadn't heard of it. I did similar years ago and thought I'd never go back but now I may just. The drinks were filling.
I do 16:8. Lost 2.5 that .5 hase come back. I slip off course and struggle to get back.
Three of us, DH (chocaholic/cakeaholic) and DS. the positives are we seem to be giving each other space and eat together every evening. It's that meal though. DS now into baking. Bread yum yum
Seriously though I need to get a grip.
I'll be looking up the 'pear' thread

Brigidsdaughter Sat 02-May-20 12:36:06

Nankate I'll be joining, thanks for mentioning it.

The big issue with my half stone is that 2.5 was half my goal loss. Now I have nearly 3st to lose ?

loopyloo Sat 02-May-20 12:40:58

No but I should be. I could blame DH as he is home all the time and has a very sweet tooth but I eat when I am bored .I really must get my weight down because of my type 2 diabetes.
I really really guilty that I am not making better use of this time. Why am I not writing a best selling novel or clearing the junk out? Or doing something for charity?
Today I will make a start!

Janiepops Sat 02-May-20 12:43:27

I started the Exante diet a week ago, and lost 7lbs! Hard to start with, hungry, headache, very “bunged up”, so belly ache, but all passed now, feel great. Weigh 16st and want to be about 10 or 11st. ( I’m 5’9”) no exercise at all, but will start some walking soon.
Think it’s a great to do in lockdown. Started as an ugly duckling, hoping a beautiful swan emerges 20 weeks later!!!???

TwinLolly Sat 02-May-20 12:48:24

I've been trying to fast and only eat an evening meal. Now and then I break my resolve with something small for lunch or a snack of fruit, and occasionally crisps or nuts.

DH has lost weight, which is good. (He was obese)
He is lighter than he has been in years. His GP gave him a goal to reach by the end of last year, which he was unable to make. He sent himself a goal and has just reached it now, which is 5kg more than the GP's goal. After reaching the GP's goal, he will set himself other weight goals. Obesity and diabetes runs in his family so he has to be really careful.

I put on quite a bit of weight over the years and since trying to fast, I've started to lose weight. I've not reached my goal - which is a bit hard because of menopause and also being hypothyroid and needing thyroxine. Hopefully my blood sugars coming down because I was borderline Type 2 diabetic.

Brigidsdaughter Sat 02-May-20 13:15:44

TwinLolly I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. 5 stone up - late diagnosis and death in family. Levo didnt work. Now on combo with T3.
Fasting only plan that works. I was pre diabetic, cholesterol borderline too. Last bloods back to normal. I'm struggling now but this thread has I inspired me.
Thank you all

Authoress Sat 02-May-20 13:54:17

Well, I dunno about the losing weight to go out bit, but I'm running out of clothes that fit...

Authoress Sat 02-May-20 13:55:15

@TwinLolly - good for you! I know how tough that is.

TwinLolly Sat 02-May-20 14:15:29

Brigidsdaughter You are fortunate to have a GP to put you on a T3 combo. My GP only tests the TSH but never the other T's. I know that I have thyroid antibodies so I will be on lifelong thyroxine but it is frustrating when the GP doesn't request other T numbers.

TwinLolly Sat 02-May-20 14:21:09

Brigidsdaughter and Authoress I find fasting difficult sometimes because DH loves his food... and loves to nibble sometimes. I really struggle to say 'no' when he asks me if I want a snack - if he is going to have a snack. Sheer willpower to say no, because I know what he is having is ..... nice.

Having said that DH is a lot better than before the coronoavirus, hence his weight-loss. I think he takes inspiration from me when I refuse a snack because then he sometimes won't snack. It's a 2 way thing really.

To everyone else - if you are dieting: don't give up! Those who aren't dieting: you make me jealous! ?

Lesley60 Sat 02-May-20 14:32:52

Yes I’ve been on a sugar diet all through the lockdown, ? I can’t stop eating chocolate, cake and biscuits
