No politics please Scotland is on an extended lockdown here’s hoping Boris agrees. What the opinions of others.

MawB Thu 07-May-20 14:32:48

Whatever the decisions, we are still a United Kingdom so there should be a common policy should there not?

Elizabeth1 Thu 07-May-20 14:38:25

Nicola says there’s to be a meeting of the nations today however rightly so she said she’ll respect others decisions whatever as it is their right to have them.

No lockdown cannot continue, the Economic cost is just to much.

Also hospitals, doctors and dentists need to get back on track.

I don’t think for one minute the lockdown will be extended by Boris.

the NHS is a devolved issue,we agreed to the 4 nations approach to the start of the pandemic but it was flawed to say the least .It was a very half hearted lockdown compared to other countries.
Nicola Sturgeon is well within her rights to say we can follow a different route if or when necessary.

SueDonim Thu 07-May-20 14:53:39

A very clever move by NS. If Boris starts to lift the lockdown on Sunday, he’ll be ‘playing with people’s lives’. If he doesn’t lift it, he’ll be following Nicola’s lead.

We will find out Sunday afternoon on the Beeb as to what next.

I admire Nicola Sturgeon.
I hope the lockdown is eased in a wY to fire up the economy again with minimal risk.

Norah Thu 07-May-20 15:15:36

Lockdown extension is good, to me.

Floradora9 Thu 07-May-20 15:28:22

I have been impressed by Nicola but I wish we could have been allowd to take the car to the place where we would take our exercise as in England as we are so fed up of our own neighborhood. Just a few miles out would be lovely.

AGAA4 Thu 07-May-20 15:54:01

I live in Wales and our government may have a different approach. Will we go with Scotland or England?
Our First Minister doesn't want people travelling into Wales just yet.

GagaJo Thu 07-May-20 15:59:38

I hope you do get an extended lockdown.

I read scientific modelling the uk possible deaths today. 250,000. Could be prevented but won't be because England's out of lockdown. Almightly lucre comes first.

AGAA4 Thu 07-May-20 16:04:45

We have had a stricter lockdown in Wales. Not that all have adhered to it. I think/hope that we won't be rushing out of lockdown too soon even if England do.

EllanVannin Thu 07-May-20 16:06:11

Never mind about the shrinking economy, what about the shrinking population ? What matters most ?

3nanny6 Thu 07-May-20 16:15:53

Scotland could just be right. Yes all these journalists are baying for Boris to ease the lockdown in the name of economy. Printing all sorts of propaganda to relax the country. What will Boris and these tabloids have to say when
Wave 2 and possibly Wave 3 sweeps through the U.K.? Like Boris is saying about the care homes "Oh I have much regret for what has happened" it's a bit late now.

janeainsworth Thu 07-May-20 16:18:33

I heard on the radio at lunch time that the R number (the number of people each COVID patient infects) is higher in Scotland than the rest of the U.K. so it makes sense for them to continue with a stricter lockdown.
Gagajo it’s easy to make the jibe that ‘filthy lucre’ comes first. But we are headed for not just a recession but a great depression. Many more people will suffer from that than have already suffered from the virus itself.
Of course no-one wants to risk a second wave which would probably be more disastrous than the first.
But people’s economic & financial well-being as well as their mental and physical well-being has to be considered.
If there is a depression it’s not the rich who will suffer, it’s the people who are already deprived & poor. I don’t envy those who have to take the decision whether to reduce or maintain lockdown.

3nanny6 Thu 07-May-20 16:29:24

Get the economy back on the move regardless, how fast did the virus suddenly sweep through the U.K.? The 2 wave will be even more of a disaster even frontline staff are saying so and once our health service is over whelmed with covid 19 we will all be in peril. It will not really matter who is rich who is poor we will all be up the Swanee together.

I have believed from the start that there needs to be some regional differences based on scientific and clinical evidence.

GabriellaG54 Thu 07-May-20 16:34:27

My money is on an agreement being reached on Sunday which will allow certain premises to open subject to conditions and people allowed to mingle, go for picnics etc in family groups and exercise more - always keeping 2 metres apart.
More public transport but with reduced numbers carried.

GabriellaG54 Thu 07-May-20 16:37:44

According to government figures I am ok ? because more black individuals contract the virus than white (UK figures)
The ratio is purported to be 5-1.

GabriellaG54 Thu 07-May-20 16:38:59

In reality, the numbers are tiny.

Megs36 Thu 07-May-20 16:43:36

UnfortunatelyI don’t think those who are shielded will be ‘eased’ for some time.

GabriellaG54 Thu 07-May-20 16:45:21

Reading an article today (no, not in the DM) it is said that once you have had the virus you cannot get it again and anyone coughing ? (that emoji appeared all by itself) after being cleared is simply expelling dead cells from their lungs (which are not able to be passed on)
That's a scientific fact, so said the author.

JenniferEccles Thu 07-May-20 16:49:51

I’m pretty sure that the will be a lessening of some restrictions , but it has been made clear that it is going to be a slow steady process.

We are already predicted to be heading for a disastrous recession, so it’s obvious that the economy is the number one priority now.

The minority of people in the very vulnerable category can still be protected whilst the rest of the country gets back to work.

Toadinthehole Thu 07-May-20 16:50:18

It’s not whether we should or shouldn’t. People just won’t do it. Our area has been getting busier over the last few weeks. People are worried about money and their jobs. I can’t see it working if it’s extended.
