"The unspoken subtext is that the NHS has proved its capacity to handle a continuing throughput of the stricken and the dying, and that maintaining a tolerable level of continuing coronavirus deaths is an acceptable price to pay for the resumption of economic activity."

This is from an article pointing out that there is currently much greater risk to the unfortunate masses, who are now being 'actively encouraged' to return to work, than there is to the wealthy and powerful.

Furret's post is very funny, and the pm's speech was appalling, but I do think the country needs to begin to grapple with this
If we wait for the infection risk to be 0 lockdown will never end and the country will run out of money.
We just go on pointing out the illogicalities and inconsistencies in govt rules rather than using our own judgement in applying them to our own lives we'll never get anywhere.

Callistemon Tue 12-May-20 09:26:56

That was and is the plan Daisymae, yes.

The peak has been flattened but not yet in Scotland as numbers are still rising there, hence the different stance there, no relaxation of rules.
As for Wales, who knows?

As I read on the net: Just because they are easing lockdown doesn't mean that the pandemic is over, it just means that they have room in ICU for you.

Exactly Teach1968 - how can it make any sense at all to suggest that, for example we can meet one member of our family but not their partner but we can safely send our 5 year olds in to school?
The DM this morning has headlines accusing teaching unions of attempting to block the moves to reopen schools. The accusation is of course couched in highly critical references, as though the unions just want to undermine Mr Johnson. I don't think he needs help, he's undermining himself every time he speaks during this crisis.
The Unions represent their members and its their job to do what they can to ensure that teaching staff, caretakers, dinner supervisors and so on can work as safely as possible. That isn't undermining the PM, its doing what they're paid to do.
If the teachers are as safe as possible, so will be our precious children.

I want to know why Wednesday is the day? As a granny I can’t have contact with my grandkids and family, but as a teaching assistant I can have contact with lots of children and their parents! hmm

Furret Tue 12-May-20 08:27:08

Thank you all who enjoyed that. I thought it might cheer you up so shared it.

Blinko Tue 12-May-20 08:14:28

Well I enjoyed it, Furret.

Just heard O'Leary saying Ryanair will be flying from July. So anyone who wants to get away can get away!

We're off to the local park to meet a couple of friend/s later. I reckon we can't meet in our gardens because we can't be policed there. And we might hug people.

What a party pooper you are Maw

Whitewavemark2 Tue 12-May-20 07:53:57

Oh dear maw shame to bring a sour note into the merriment.

Perhaps you got out of the wrong side of the bed?

MawB Tue 12-May-20 07:50:55

Read it before Furret - on FB and not even original there - unless they were quoting you?

Willow73 Tue 12-May-20 07:44:18

Furret you are a star, you answered all my questions! Well maybe not one, why are French people allowed to come in without any quarantine? answers on gransnet please, not a postcard, that might carry the virus across the Welsh/Scottish borders!
Thanks to you all for the laughs on here.

Beechnut Tue 12-May-20 07:35:53

Furret that made me smile ?

BlueBelle Tue 12-May-20 07:25:16

Messages should be completely clear you shouldn’t have to have a discussion to try and translate it

What they have said if you listened especially those over 70 , the restrictions are still place as to movement, but also allot depends on decline in death rate , what was low yesterday does not mean its going to go down further it could rapidly increase and cause a 2nd wave and further lockdowns

As for Bozo's address to the nation, I think he was just grandstanding and trying to be statesmanlike/Churchillian.

It was totally unnecessary, given that he was to address Parliament the next day and hold a daily press briefing. Even the Speaker made a comment last week about his plan to speak on TV on Sunday, before telling Parliament.

Gabriella I have a flight booked to Toulouse in August - booked long ago so will just see how things develop. I should be in Tuscany right now so keeping fingers crossed for France!

shandi6570 Tue 12-May-20 07:02:40

Thank you Furret for your explanation of the 'new rules', you have made me cry, although I'm not sure if it's with laughter or despair. ?

Whitewavemark2 Tue 12-May-20 06:42:50

furret

Your explanation was so much clearer than Johnson and his cabinet cronies.

Well done??

Nana3 Tue 12-May-20 00:45:46

Furret

Best laugh in ages. Thanks ?

FarNorth Tue 12-May-20 00:31:55

I was a bit confused, but not now.
Thanks for the clear explanation Furret.

Bravo! Furretgringringrin

Callistemon Mon 11-May-20 23:01:10

I'll throw it across, Furret and hope it doesn't land in the river!

Furret Mon 11-May-20 22:55:59

Meet you on the border and I’ll swap you two toilet rolls and a packet of yeast for some banana cake.
