I might get rid of my telly!

Having been a dawn till dusk tv watcher (disabled, don’t go out ever) I have suddenly stopped watching it. Fed up with repeats, adverts, crime and murder programmes and corona virus. I usually put on YouTube via chrome and listen to the rain or sea waves. Would you live without the tv? Do you already? Love to hear your thoughts.

Well it’s 20.54 in the evening and ours hadn’t been on yet.

In the winter we watch more but quite frankly there’s not a lot of quality TV.

Always have a book on the go?

I warch very little but its useful sonetines so I will keep it and jusr switch it off. It can stop you doing other interesting things.

Tonight is ok as I like the Repair Shop and Sewing Bee but that’s about all. Been watching Netflix and Amazon mainly but rarely switch on until mid evening.

I really wouldn’t want to be without it, and I think there are some great programmes on. I’m a keen reader too, and listen to the radio and podcasts during the day, but like a bit of variety. Tonight I’m enjoying The Great British Sewing Bee, yesterday it was The A Word, tomorrow The Real Marigold Hotel, etc. There’s something we enjoy most nights and if not there’s plenty that we’ve recorded or can cast from iPlayer and so on. Perhaps it’s the dawn to dusk thing that’s sickened you of it, Artdecogran? Too much of a good (or bad?) thing?

I wouldn't want to be without the telly. It keeps DH amused so I can read in peace. grin

I was asking myself would I rather TV or laptop if I could only have one? I guess laptop as I don't really watch a lot of TV, mainly just interesting documentaries and films. I find it's often just company when I'm on my own.

I've enjoyed the flower show each night but beyond that it's a game of online patience. Afternoons I have the CD's on the go.

I watch the old films on the Talking Pictures channel more than any other programmes.
The Marigold Hotel tomorrow.

Not me. We enjoy watching TV at night, and my DH is a sports fan so it's a necessity as far as he is concerned!

I can see how the younger generation is giving up cable, and now only subscribing to on line viewing such as Netflix. For all the endless channels, quite often there is nothing on that I would care to watch.

Floradora9 Wed 20-May-20 21:44:18

We watched the old Van Der Valk from Talking Pictures last night , it was dire . We usually watch about an hour and a half a day but some streaming from the RSNO Marquee TV etc. so not all programmes from the usual channels. We did enjoy a Lewis the other night .

I wouldn’t want to be without it altogether. However I do pick and choose and when I have watched any chosen programme the set is turned off . I can’t stand it just droning on in the corner as some people do.

I think there are some very good programmes on the TV. Not everything is to my liking but there is certainly enough to entertain me for a couple of hours or so in the evening.

Everybody raves about Netflix, but having tried it for a few weeks, I am not at all impressed. The BBC gets such bad press and yet there are so many interesting programmes on its channels - to suit all kinds of tastes.

I dumped my TV 7 years ago and have rarely missed it. I sometimes watch the news online on my laptop. I also watch the odd movie on Neflix . Yesterday evening I watched a super 2 hour watercolor painting demonstration on YouTube.

vampirequeen Thu 21-May-20 06:11:52

I like my TV but don't have it on as much as I used to.

Calendargirl Thu 21-May-20 06:20:19

Would not want to be without my tv. Never have it on in the day, but switch on for 6 news. As someone else said, if there’s nothing I fancy watching, it goes off and I read or look at my I pad.

Willow500 Thu 21-May-20 06:57:48

Ours is on a lot at the moment in whatever rooms we happen to be in - mostly by me. I can't stand silence so put it on as background noise. Husband can just sit and stare into space doing nothing without it on which drives me to distraction so I'll put YouTube on or Prime just to have some sound (other than his snoring grin )!

Wibby Thu 21-May-20 07:07:23

I cant get out so my tv is on all day, a lot of the time for back ground noise. I watch a lot of youtube films via chromecast on my tv and also a lot of catch up tv via chromecast. Theres quite a good amount of late night tv to catch up on and I go to bed at 10 pm.

boheminan Thu 21-May-20 08:30:21

Not had a telly for over 20 years and don't miss it.

Just about everything I'd like to watch can be picked up on my laptop, so I can't see the point of having a telly as well. My daughter's installed Netflix, and there's IPlayer and youtube, so a choice for catching up on films, plus the BBC news stream for keeping up with anything else that's going on in the world.

ninathenana Thu 21-May-20 09:38:44

I would hate to be without a TV. We have it on from 6pm news until we go to bed at 11pm.
We can usually find something on Sky channels to watch if there is nothing else. We both love NCIS and Salvage Hunters for example.

TwiceAsNice Thu 21-May-20 09:47:15

I wouldn’t be without a tv but rarely watch it live. I record programmes I like on the Sky planner and then watch them when I please. Some of it is dire I know but some of it is very good. I’m another real marigold hotel fan

Witzend Thu 21-May-20 10:01:32

We don’t watch all that much but I certainly wouldn’t want to get rid of ours. There’s often very interesting stuff on BBC2 and 4 - last night we were watching that prog. about the village of Kibworth, fascinating, and another dh was keen to see on catch-up about the ‘fathers’ of modern chemistry. I did find that v interesting too, though should add that I’m also a fan of Vera, Shetland, etc., and do like the Repair Shop, when I remember to watch it.

We now also have Netflix and have found some good stuff there - currently absorbed in Marseille - a French (subtitled) drama series about politics and very dodgy goings on in that city, and featuring a very portly Gerard Depardieu.

Forgotten, What Remains, and the whole of Last Tango In Halifax are other series we’ve really enjoyed on catch-up or Netflix.

Floradora9 Thu 21-May-20 10:06:57

Why do people who say they have it on just for some background noise not listen to the radio instead ? This is just out of interest not a criticism . I am listening to Classic FM in the background and love it .

Wibby Thu 21-May-20 10:21:29

@Floradora9, I have radio channels on my tv I listen to, being isolated and alone its too quiet without background noise.

Maggiemaybe Thu 21-May-20 12:19:43

Nobody’s admitted being addicted to the soaps yet. Go on then, I’ll go first! Just Corrie, though. smile

I must say I’m enjoying it more now it’s only on for three half hours a week. It was getting to saturation point.

Fennel Thu 21-May-20 12:20:48

We don't have a tv but watch programmes on our 'puters from BBCiplayer etc. You still need a license.
We have different tastes in programmes so it suits us.
My favourites are mostly outdoors/nature topics.
