SueDonim I didn't know there was a loo roll shortage then! This pandemic was the first time we ever panic bought anything. I'm amazed now when I see them stacked in a prominent place on special offer!

Smileless2012 Mon 22-Jun-20 14:21:55

Oh yes Grandmafrench and H1954 that glued down bit just has to go. Phew; I'm glad I'm not the only onesmile

SueDonim Mon 22-Jun-20 14:27:00

Bluesky I don’t remember why I stocked up on loo rolls for Brexit. Maybe there was a Gransnet thread! I saw this huge pack somewhere and decided to buy it. I’ve never had so many loo rolls in the house. grin I do recall a shortage back in the 70’s but I worked in a place that had ready access so we never went without.

The glued bit of the roll! Sometimes they’re so annoying to start off! confused

midnightschild Mon 22-Jun-20 14:40:42

Always over and front facing and I’m sure I started doing that because I read that if it hung down against the wall then spiders could crawl onto it.
However, last week I was about to use some loo roll and noticed (luckily before grabbing it) a HUGE spider on the front, so this doesn’t work.
I regularly go for a wee in the middle of the night without switching the bathroom light on so my blood ran cold at the near miss!

Forward facing for me and remove the glued down bit.

Several years ago I bought some Christmas toilet roll with penguins on it. Made my grandson's Christmas he told everyone about Nanny's toilet roll.

merlotgran Mon 22-Jun-20 14:44:44

I wonder if I'm an under not over person because I'm left handed? hmm grin

Bakingmad0203 Mon 22-Jun-20 14:47:21

Ditto vampirequeen I do it automatically as I think that if the roll is hanging from the back then people with dirty hands infect the wall and then the rest of the toilet paper where it rests against the wall too!

Bakingmad0203 Mon 22-Jun-20 14:50:30

I remember on one occasion visiting a relative’s house, using their toilet on arrival and changing the toilet roll around so it was front facing. Before I left I visited the toilet again( it was a long visit!) and the toilet roll had been changed back!

SueDonim Mon 22-Jun-20 14:51:11

Midnightschild ?????? at that tale! ? ? ?

Merlotgran, wouldn’t that depend on whether the loo roll holder was on the left or right hand side? grin

Bakingmad0203 Mon 22-Jun-20 14:53:19

Oh and while on the subject of toilet rolls has anyone noticed they are getting narrower? DH says it’s my bum getting bigger?

Calendargirl Mon 22-Jun-20 14:55:27

midnightschild

Well, I bet the poor spider wouldn’t have been thrilled to have been wiped on someone’s bum before being tossed in the loo and drowning! And in the dark!

??

Front facing and yes, I'm using my Brexit stash too!

If the perforations don't line up then separate the two layers and turn the top layer backwards.

grandMattie Mon 22-Jun-20 15:56:25

Forwards here.
I remember seeing somewhere that in the US, Martha Stewart (remember her?) recommended forward first. So I felt good having done it all my life... ??

AGAA4 Mon 22-Jun-20 15:56:46

Always front facing and no pointy bits!

Nortsat Mon 22-Jun-20 16:07:49

Over the top, not from the back and under.

I read an article several years ago, which said that people who hang their loo paper over the top are more aspirational. And they tend to earn c£20k per annum more than people who hang their loo paper at the back and under.

I am sure it’s utter nonsense, but I often smile about it, when I put a new ‘aspirational’ roll on the holder...
What a lot of ‘aspirational’ GN’s we are .... ??

Sussexborn Mon 22-Jun-20 16:11:17

Front facing. I thought the pointy bit was only in hotels. Yes, they have become narrower recently.

The girl who showed off her covid stash in March recently offered them for £17 a pack on a local selling page. Not sure where she has been living recently but certainly not in the real world.

Now that the invasion of the DGC is closer ?I happily pass on this tip. Don't know about yours but my two use vast amounts because they set the roll a-rolling and the paper tumbles down.
SO when putting on a new one, take a moment to squeeze the roll.
The inner tube is now oval in shape and this acts as a brake!

MawB Mon 22-Jun-20 16:48:46

There is nothing light hearted about this topic, indeed it is one of the utmost importance.

Front facing of course.

AGAA4 Mon 22-Jun-20 16:52:23

People's bathrooms should be routinely searched for toilet paper facing the wrong way. There could be heavy fines.

phoenix Mon 22-Jun-20 16:55:47

Over, unless we have a young, naughty cat in the house, in which case it would be under!

BlueBelle Mon 22-Jun-20 16:58:23

Which ever way it comes out of my hand to be fitted on
I have a life and couldn’t care less... nor do I care whether my salt pot is to the right of the pepper pot or even if they are in pots

Life is just too short

shysal Mon 22-Jun-20 17:01:15

Forward facing. If it hangs down the back there is a danger of touching the wall when using it.

Oopsminty Mon 22-Jun-20 17:04:03

vampirequeen

I always have a few spare rolls because we live in a village with no shop but I didn't buy extra before lockdown.

Please forgive me in advance Ooopsminty. If I ever get invited to your house, you'll find the toilet roll position has been changed when I've gone. I am OCD about toilet rolls grin

That's perfectly fine, vampirequeen!

SueDonim Mon 22-Jun-20 18:14:14

Bakingmad, I’m glad you’ve raised the subject of size - I’m sure the pieces are getting smaller and smaller! Tbf, my rear end has expanded a bit overtime but not that much! grin

JackyB Tue 23-Jun-20 09:54:27

Definitely over. Our upstairs loo has the toilet roll on the wall behind it and I can just hold it with my elbow while I pull a few pieces off with the same hand.

I kid myself it's more hygienic, too, but really, whichever way it's facing, it all touches the wall. So, as long as it doesn't touch the floor....
