How many places are there in a kitchen for a 10" bread knife to disappear into? It was in the knife block yesterday morning; I know this because I used it to slice the loaf for breakfast toast. This morning it had gone. I've searched the dishwasher, drawers, the bin, the bread bin. Nada. So.... who's got the bread knife?

We often loose the TV remote control, its amazi g the places it gets to before its eventually found, and no one ever owns up to putting it there. The last time it went missing, we eventually found it in one of the door pockets in our car, but we have no idea how it managed to get there. We also loose lots of cutlery, and im often end up buying a new set when I find some on offer in the bargain shops. I always keep my 'best set' in its own box well away from the everyday stuff, where it gets counted and replaced everytime we use it. My DH is awful at taking one of my best vegetable peeling knives to use for his woodwork, which really annoys me so much that I now hide it away in its own tupperwear box at the back of a cupboar d as soon as I have finished using it, and thankfully hes never found it so far, although I have caught im looking through the kitchen draws trying to find it before now!

Well I think I can beat all of you - I can lose things whilst I am using them! I have lost count of the number of times I have been using scissors, pens, knives etc. put them down for a moment only for them to disappear when I want to pick them up again! I then search all around where I am working, only to look back where I had originally placed them to find they have returned.

The kitchen drawers cannot be removed but I find the odd knife has fallen behind and is a couple of drawers down, obviously well hidden. I only find it when I am looking for something else which has vanished.

I have many pairs of kitchen scissors but none to hand when required.

If there's a man living in your house check the garage and man sheds!!

Yes, always!
When our bread knife went missing one day a few years ago,
I had a word with DH.It was in the shed, he had been using it
To get weeds out of cracks in the patio.angry

Glad it turned up Chewbacca ....the washing machine! Are we reaching the age when anything can happen??

SusieFlo

Whoever’s taking them will be very small and wearing red velvet shorts belonging to my 2 year old that went missing c.1982 from ours.

Hmmmm, sounds like the stolen items elf? He strikes everywhere!

Marydoll

Freezer? Fridge?

You will know her/him. They are wearing my chartreuse colour, ( I like to be accurate) Phase eight linen jumper! wink

I will keep an eye out for that marydoll in case it turns up
Behind the sofa.Chartreuse you say....is that a greeny yellowy
Colour?

lemongrove Fri 17-Jul-20 14:13:01

If I find it I shall return it to you marydoll ( unless it suits me when I try it on) ?

When scissors go missing they can nearly always be found in the garage - once I found a pair stuck point down in a flower bed (oh yes, I remember now, he said,
I was using them to cut some garden twine).

If he ever, ever borrow my dressmaking scissors, I think he knows where the next pair of missing scissors will be found ???

Rosina Fri 17-Jul-20 14:36:10

How frustrating it is to spend hours looking for missing items - I've spent a few this week looking for a special tool that 'draws' on my laptop screen. I searched everywhere - and this morning it turned up in one of the first places that I looked. I try to be orderly, to put keys, reading glasses, documents that need attention, filing etc. into specific places but I think I have always lived with a Mr. Nobody who foils my every effort, coupled with OH who is the untidiest man on the planet!

quizqueen Fri 17-Jul-20 14:38:23

Even after I've looked in the dishwasher, I still find things I've looked for in there and missed or in a different place in the cutlery drawer or under the table or the bread bin.

Chewy, that so made me laugh. But a TEN inch knife?

Bathsheba, ouch ?

Laurabelo Fri 17-Jul-20 15:34:59

According to my Irish friends, it’s the Little People who are always hiding things for fun. The more you fret, the harder they laugh. The theory is that when you stop worrying about it, they get bored and bring it back. Although I’d try the Danish pudding , too...

Believe it or not I found mine in the craft room. My 7 year old overly independant little boy was making something with his tool box, his saw blade on his junior hack saw had broken and he realised this looked very similar and had used it. Had to get myself a new one and now we have a craft room bread knife for miscilanious reasons as well as a kitchen one. I found my potato masher in the garden because what else can you use to smash Lumos of soil up when digging tunnels and my potato peeler was used for whittling sticks. Can't say hubby is much better. I'm forever finding dinner knives he has used as screwdrivers and spoons he uses to do the tiny but of weeding in pots to save getting his hands dirty. Real weeding is left to me. But he does occasionally tidy a pot up but won't use the trowel cos it's dirty so uses my desert spoons normally a clean one each time. I'm forever having to but new kitchen items. Even My blender became a homemade paper maker.clogged up with wet newspaper.

Jayne16 Fri 17-Jul-20 16:41:50

Down the side or back of the cooker? I have found utensils there before

Janetashbolt Fri 17-Jul-20 16:56:21

I had to buy more dessert spoons last week, I was down to 2 from an origginal set of 6, only me and husband so I can't even blame kids for binning them accidentally

The Kitchen Gremlin, who has recently absconded with a small saucepan, is a brother of the Sock Gremlin who specialises in removing socks from the washing machine leaving just one of a pair, the other never to be seen again.

Try looking in the fridge with your butter

Taichinan Fri 17-Jul-20 17:58:47

My son couldn't find his phone while he was visiting the other day. He looked everywhere he could think of and then borrowed his wife's phone to call his. Sure enough, we heard it ring. It was in the pocket if his shorts - the ones he was wearing!

mrscake1 Fri 17-Jul-20 18:11:24

Mine disappeared at Christmas and ended up in the compost heap. I found it when we were spreading the compost in the garden in the spring. Don't know how it got there.

Chewbacca Fri 17-Jul-20 18:24:55

It's going to take me a while to get over rummaging about in my compost heap mrscake. I still don't feel clean yet!

justwokeup Fri 17-Jul-20 18:54:52

Bathsheba, you can get dressmaking scissors engraved with dire warnings like ‘fabric or death’ which I think is entirely reasonable! Glad you found your knife Chewbacca, but if there is an Edward Scissorhands about I’d like to know where my garden scissors are. Perhaps I’ll dig them up with all the plastic farm animals one day.

Cambia Fri 17-Jul-20 19:00:05

I have just spent an hour looking for my ring.....inside my rubber glove!

Merryweather Fri 17-Jul-20 19:05:04

The ghost!
It definitely is in this house
I can be frantically searching fo something and not find it for days- if I ask the ghost it reappears exactly where I thought the item was in the first place but wasn’t. Knives, clothing, books, stationary etc anything can disappear. My partner has started to notice it too.

glammagran Fri 17-Jul-20 20:27:25

I’m digressing from the topic a little. At the end of last November I posted Christmas presents to my grandchildren who live in The Netherlands via Hermes. Parcel did not arrive and in February I was reimbursed after much kerfuffle. In mid March my parcel was delivered back to my home, totally bashed up and labelled as undeliverable. I thought I’d send by Parcelforce but then lockdown happened. Last week DD2 posted for me and it arrived at their home yesterday. Just hope the clothes included still fit after 7.5 months!!
