Lucca, I’d love to see some yellowlegs, just so I could say that!

Meanwhile.....

I love collective nouns. I knew an “unkindness of ravens“ but have just discovered that yellowlegs (birds) are.....an incontinence of yellowlegs ?????

I too just saw the flamboyance of flamingoes a couple of weeks ago!
I like a ‘prickle’ of hedgehogs and a ‘ lounge’ of lizards.

I loved First Aid in English! My DD was taught using it nearly 20 years later at the same school and I loved it all over again!

First Aid in English was a Friday treat at my primary school, as was précis - something I am still good at. And - slightly off piste - does anyone else remember with affection the radio Adventures in Music and the accompanying little black and white booklets (one between two)? I learned such a lot from those lessons,

I only knew gaggle shock

mary51 Mon 27-Jul-20 11:12:17

Some of them I just couldn't think do. So here they are if anyone is wondering!

Sleuth of bears
Down of hares
Bank of swans
Lepe of leopards
Stalk of foxes

The easy ones - gaggle of geese, covey of partridges, troop of monkeys and clutch of chickens.

I liked the flamboyance of flamingoes!

I've still got 'First Aid in English' somewhere.

I must have known all these at some time in the dim and distant past but ive forgotten most of them.

^ flamboyance of flamingoes^
Lovely

This will annoy me now until I've looked them all up.
?????????

(Yes, I know some of the pictures aren't right!)

Knew them once, soon forgot as they never came in handy. However one I really like I only learned recently A flamboyance of flamingos. How lovely is that.

Yes remember them from ‘First Aid in English’. Loved doing those and ‘homes’ and ‘occupations’.

LullyDully Fri 24-Jul-20 14:08:14

Yes remember doing them for the 11 plus. Useful for crosswords if only I could call them to mind. Useless information to be honest unless you love words.

B9exchange Fri 24-Jul-20 13:33:10

I only got two, and I used to coach my children on verbal reasoning for the 11 plus, where they all cropped up!
(hangs head in shame)

I am a collective noun failure [sad}

mary51 Fri 24-Jul-20 13:03:47

Just came across this in an old book Girl annual 1961.
2 Hercules cycles as first prize, followed by 1 Ever Ready Radio, 1 Record Player and 100 copies of Girl Book of Hobbies!

Match these animals to the collective nouns/
1. Bear
2 Hare
3 Geese
4 Leopard
5 Fox
6 Chicken
7 Swan
8 Partridge
9 Monkey

Nouns : stalk, sleuth, gaggle, down, bank, covey, troop, lepe, clutch.

Strictly for under 16s then. I was stumped by a couple of them and resorted to Google.

Quite a different era.
