Just that it is so hot here, it’s cruel and if a weather person says it’s great weather I’m going to punch them right on the nose!

I wish Blackburn had a bit more of this hot sun than we have had! Today looks as we might be getting some of it and I hope so. I find being stuck indoors during a lockdown is very depressing.

It was 21c at 7am in Kent this morning.
The first thing I did when I came downstairs was switch the fan on. A friend said she had bought a air cooler which she found great. She lives in a flat and the cooler has castors so easy to wheel it to the bedroom at night. I may invest in one for the bedroom.

It hit 38 at its hottest here yesterday. I loved the heat when I was young but find it too much now. I had to go to the dentist yesterday and being in town in the heat and then having to wear a mask for a short time nearly finished me off!

Got back and was in the flat with the fan going full pelt to cool down, fan gong all night to try and sleep. Granddaughters in and out of large paddling pool filled with cold water all day. I agree about hot water coming out of the cold tap too

What exactly is an air cooler please Nina the nana?

Witzend Wed 12-Aug-20 10:02:08

Apparently we had a ‘61%’ chance of a thunderstorm in the small hours last night.
I was longing for it to wake me up, so I could lie in bed listening to thunder and the rain pelting down.
Alas it never happened. ?

An air cooler is one that you put cold water in and as the fan blows air over it it cools the air. It’s definitely not as good as air con but every little helps. You don’t have to vent them outside and they are light and manoeuvrable. Unfortunately you might find they are all out of stock. At 8.30am it was 29 degrees here.

I’ve only read the first page so far so I hope you haven’t all moved onto another subject! It’s 22.1 here in Portugal now. Quite cloudy too, it will probably clear later. I’ll let you know later when I shouldn’t be doing something else.

Speldnan Wed 12-Aug-20 10:11:18

It’s ghastly here down in the south. I’ve lived in the tropics but they’re geared up for it there. Here, the houses are designed to hold the heat and we aren’t acclimatised to the temperatures. It prevents you from sleeping or exercising, kills the plants even if you water them, melts the roads etc etc. Plus sends all the idiots to the coast where they block up the roads, litter the beaches and even kill themselves by not respecting the sea! The heat makes me angry as you can see!?

Witzend Wed 12-Aug-20 10:13:00

Thermometer outside the kitchen window read 34.6 just now - at 10.09 am, and the sun isn’t on that window at the moment.

Min and max for the previous 24 hours are reading, 20.7 and 38.6.

Speldnan Wed 12-Aug-20 10:14:08

Re air coolers, I bought one last year at great expense and it’s absolutely useless! Didn’t bring the temp down in the bedroom even 1 degree plus it’s incredibly noisy. Haven’t even bothered too get it out this year: total waste of money!

Aepgirl Wed 12-Aug-20 10:22:44

Why blame the weather presenter? It’s no good getting cross when we are just being given the facts - we just have to deal with it, close windows and curtains, run fans, and drink plenty of water.

Rosiebee Wed 12-Aug-20 10:40:53

Me too ! Have always said that the menopause destroyed my inner thermostat. I now perspire through my head and it just make my hair look sad and straggly. Give me Autumn and Spring anytime although I do enjoy early morning and summer evenings except when it is humid.

I’m in hibernation for all the wrong reasons
Hiding away from this sweltering season
I’m wearing the minimum though it’s not a nice sight
Exposing bare flesh makes me look quite a fright
My feet are in water. the fans are all blowing
And my electricity bill is growing and growing
If it goes on much longer I’ll turn into slush
And have an excuse for my brain going to mush!

Are the UK indigenous ever satisfied [sad[with Brit weather.

HootyMcOwlface Wed 12-Aug-20 11:03:24

Is there a country with weather and temperatures similar to our spring all year round? I want to move there.

I hate being cold in the winter and say I’ll never complain about being too hot ever again - until summer comes round and I’m too hot and then I swear I’ll never complain about being cold ever again!

sarahellenwhitney Wed 12-Aug-20 11:04:24

Sorry, sad, must be the hot weather ,

MiniMoon Wed 12-Aug-20 11:04:26

In my bit of Northumberland at 11:00 am the temperature is 21°. It feels rather cooler than that though, as there is a breeze blowing.
I hope we avoid the thunderstorms later as I'm taking DGD down to the kayak club where she is going paddle boarding on the river.

jane1956 Wed 12-Aug-20 11:06:28

we get 10+ months of grey so 3 days heat is nothing let us who do like it enjoy the short heat please

moggie57 Wed 12-Aug-20 11:07:11

me too .am so lethargic , keeping hydrated is a big problem for me with kidney problems .mostly i stay indoors.being in a flat is awful. communal gardens full of screaming kids unless me and a neighbour sit on the benches we dont get to sit out when the sun has gone.at least my slamming the doors neighbours have gone away for a few weeks..peace and quie

MissAdventure Wed 12-Aug-20 11:07:31

I never complain about the cold. I don't mind it too much.

MissAdventure Wed 12-Aug-20 11:08:51

Nobody is stopping you enjoying anything you want to, jane.

HootyMcOwlface Wed 12-Aug-20 11:09:54

At least if you’re cold you can snuggle under a blanket, sit by the fire, get a hot water bottle and a hot drink (if you can stop at home!), but when you’re too hot nothing much works (for me anyway!)

MissAdventure Wed 12-Aug-20 11:11:02

I usually find the shops unbearably hot in the winter.

Rosina Wed 12-Aug-20 11:12:50

I was enjoying a beautiful, typically English summer a few weeks back; sunshine, fresh breezes, gardening was a joy and eating outside a pleasure. I felt happy in spite of the upside down world we are living in. Suddenly I feel as if I am living in an inferno; I can't sleep, have no appetite, shower often and as soon as I am dry I want another, and stare dismally at clothes in the morning, sorely tempted to walk about naked all day as the thought of putting anything on it unbearable.
I hate it - with a passion. It is only the thought of September coming soon that is keeping me going and yes - show me the weatherman who says 'Basking in glorious.....' and when you have all finished punching him I will wade in too.

Diggingdoris Wed 12-Aug-20 11:14:41

I used to love to sit out in the sun, but the last few years I've really struggled to cope in the heat. Even the smallest job indoors gets me in a sweat. Here in Essex we've had this heat constantly for nine days and it's really draining, and I'm feeling poorly.
