Rubbish

The UK, and England in particular is one of the dirtiest countries in Europe.

I recall an older gent being interviewed on the TV about whether he fancied going on a foreign holiday or not - his reply was - "definitely not, they're all dirty countries".

The 'visitors' to the Lake District in particular have clearly demonstrated that Brits are just dirty, and disrespectful of the environment. Because of that attitude, a camp site in Borrowdale is being forced to close for 2 or 3 weeks now, after the mess left by the 'staycation brigade'.

I don't think the idea of messy holidaymakers, or throw away society is new. But, the idea of "I want it now", and "what's in it for me" is the mantra that began to grow exponentially from 1979/80 - a bit like a virus.

I don`t think anyone else has said this...
but my opinion is that we are too soft..

ie. heavy fines, more to the point, find the culprits of these "lazy people" and give them court order that they do a long clean up job....

I really do not see what the problem is there..

our justice system is soft to the extreme.

Totally agree Riverwalk, this discarded mask situation is a disgrace, it must be happening everywhere. Another of my pet hates is discarded pizza and takeaway boxes, think people are too lazy to put them in a waste bin.

It leaves me speechless that so many still have no care for the environment and no care about the debris others have to clear up in their wake. Truly disgusting ....

What problems we have had here in North Devon since the vast influx of visitors since the rules changed.
For those of us that live in these places this summer is memorable for all the wrong reasons and many of us are lest aghast at the rudeness and mindlessness of all too many visitors....since when was leaving dirty disposable nappies acceptable in sand dunes! And so many people camping where they shouldn't at Croyde, Woolacombe and Crow point....there are no toilets in the dunes....
Years ago as a seasoned camper we used to take a small shovel and you dug a pit and buried your waste...I was once watched by a pine marten in Idaho USA as I dug and squatted over my deep pit and he supervised my burial before running away...

Despair of those people who put plastic/silky flowers on the compost heap in the churchyard! These are ‘nice’ people visiting their loved ones. They bring new tat, in a car, why can’t they take the old stuff away? Better still, bring real flowers that haven’t been imported from China.

Ruby one of my first memories is of my Mum bodyboarding on a wooden board in Bude back in the 50’s They were hired on the beach and each was numbered (as in ‘come in number 9, your time is up ?)

Its disgraceful, breaks my heart to think we've brought up generations of litter louts.
Perhaps there should be a £1 disposal levy on each board and clearly labelled bins nearby for disposal. With every waking day I despair at how coarse and uncaring our citizens have become.
What awful people and if you were to say anything you'd get a mouthful of abuse no doubt.

As long as this cheap plastic rubbish is available to buy, people will buy it and many without a social conscience will leave it behind for "someone else" to clear up.

I do wish these people could be tracked and traced, brought back to form gangs to clear up their rubbish.

There was a news article about the microscopic plastic particles in the sea the other day. Scientists have been sieving the Atlantic Ocean in various places and the pollution is far worse than previously thought.

If my Geography serves me right, Croyde Bay faces the Atlantic where the waves are pretty rough (especially at the moment). Those cheap polystyrene boards won't last five minutes. I agree with Calendargirl. Why can't people just hire the proper wooden ones designed for the job? It's like they have to possess their own of everything just to look cool, then discard it.

There has been a campaign on the local TV here in the southwest to encourage people to use wooden body boards which last for generations rather than buy these rubbish plastic ones. The wooden ones are easier to fit in a car and so are less likely to be abandoned.

Apparently most of the boards have bits out of them so no use. Others are cheap, sold in seaside shops along with buckets & spades etc, bought for kids to use while on holiday who then have no further use for them. Trouble is they contain polystyrene balls which pollutes the sea, then fish life then into us ..... and so it goes on

Pretty obvious some people have too much money if they can just casually leave stuff like this behind.
What does it teach children about looking after their possessions if they are discarded willy nilly?

I suppose the picture of the surfboards is genuine as they don’t look like the very cheap ones which break easily.

I'm not afraid to say that at times I get quite paranoid when preparing food. Nobody seems to care what goes inside them.

The environment is being slowly poisoned and it's man-made.

Fish in the sea are ingesting all kinds of things---we eat fish.
Animals grazing are eating Lord knows what ---we eat meat.
Vegetation no doubt gets peed on ----we eat that also.

Is it any wonder people get ill ?

Oh wow look at those, never seen anything like that at our beach, hope homes are found for all. Some people obviously don’t care what they leave behind

Sorry pressed too soon I ve never ever seen any abandoned ones on our beach occasionally you ll see one propped up by the bin if its broken So what is it about that town ??? Very strange
