To flush or not to flush - that is the question!

My OH insists that he does not need to flush the toilet after every visit as he is saving water. He was delighted when United Utilities told us that we should continue whatever it is we are doing as our water consumption was very low compared to similar sized properties.

I think its absolutely disgusting and i'm always in a panic to check that the toilets are 'clean' if we get unexpected visitors.

After hearing the following expression from Martin Lewis:

"If its yellow let it mellow. If its brown flush it down".

I'm wondering, am I in the minority over this?
Honestly, we are not so short of money that the cost of flushing/not flushing the toilet will make a difference!

All of it polly

It seems it’s just the two of us though Tweedle24 !

Everywhere, public toilets, toilets in restaurants, cafes, pubs, even some friends loos, the lid is invariably up.

I have used a cubicle in a public toilet when out, then often used the same one before the drive home and the lid is up so sad woman that I am it always registers with me that someone else has used it !

Anyway back to water conservation, does anyone remember a Minister for Drought appointed in the late summer of 1976 ?

Immediately following his appointment the heavens opened!

Many years ago within my job role I used to visit a lady who would only flush once a day. It didn't matter what was down the pan or who wanted to use it the rule was no flushing. It was not nice have to use her loo. For myself I usually flush every time. At night I may leave one or two flushes as I usually go about 3 or 4 times due to my water consumption. (to flush medication). I do turn off the tap when cleaning teeth and try to be economic with washing up and laundry,

Great idea!

I’m with you don’t mind. Couldn’t stand not to flush after use. Might be a bit wasteful but a lot easier on my clean freak nature! But hey let’s not judge....

Saggi Wed 26-Aug-20 15:13:54

My new modern cistern is the size of half a shoebox....one flush for pee , two flushes if it’s solids! Having said that two is sometimes not enough to do the job. At least it does control how much water you need to use... little at a time! Think in all honestly I’d rather have a bigger cistern and flush once! Although this one fills up in ten seconds. Two minds about it all really..... but would NEVER not flush. Disgusting.

JenniferEccles The lid being left up is a bugbear of mine too. I have mentioned it in conversation to be greeted with blank faces or pity.
I wish I could show a demo with coloured water to show how much of the aerosol lands on surfaces (toothbrushes included) when the loo is flushed with the lid up.
My DHL used to be very good about putting seat and lid down but, he said he was afraid a cat would fall in and drown! Whatever the reason, it achieved the objective

Sorry that didn't work but you can see what it refers to.

I'm still in awe that in the 21st century some people still feel that having a wee, in their own toilets and not flushing it away immediately, is "disgusting and dirty". Why are perfectly natural bodily secretions, that only you have to see, when you go back into the bathroom, so repellent? I'm just confused and grin

MissAdventure Wed 26-Aug-20 13:17:27

It's a very valid topic for discussion.
Considering how many are aware of envoironmental issues, and are frugal, I'm surprised that people are unprepared to talk about saving water.

sodapop Wed 26-Aug-20 13:14:48

So many people don't understand that we don't have an infinite water supply. It's not about the cost. It's not just "toilet talk" Millie its about water conservation something which should concern us all.

Netflixfan
this is a very funny post
I find it just as funny as I did when I read your request on what to do about stains in your underwear from your back passage. But you crack on believing that one of our most precious resources being abused.?

I think the porcelain in the bowl is rough. It was a replacement one and I think it’s a bit cheap and nasty. Annoyingly to replace it for that reason alone would probably be worse for the environment than having to clean it more often. I’ve even scrubbed it with Vim etc but it’s still stained. I do leave it most of the time but it does look gross.

aggie Wed 26-Aug-20 12:58:38

My toilet isn’t stained even though I don’t flush at night for wees

MayBee70 Wed 26-Aug-20 12:55:02

I save the bath water to flush the toilet as I have a water meter. However, the porcelain in my toilet bowl isn’t the best and it stains really badly so not flushing the loo as often seems to result in me having to use harsh chemicals to get it clean. It doesn’t happen with the downstairs loo though.

The Martin Lewis saying we used to use in South Africa many years ago as we had a drought. Every drop of water is precious and needs to be conserved. My husband is a water engineer and he told me it is a very costly process cleaning and purifying water. Please use it wisely. I have lived through droughts and I always save water where I can. Even though we have had flooding in the UK our water resources are very depleted. Those who need to flush every time please be a bit more considerate.
Thank you

I am afraid I have no choice but to flush. My adult son has Aspergers and ocd. Sometimes my granddaughters use the loo without flushing and it traumatises him, even if it’s just wee.

Millie22 Wed 26-Aug-20 12:44:36

Too much toilet talk recently. There was a long thread all about someone who couldn't go and now whether we all flush the toilet afterwards. I don't fancy camping anyway a bit too basic for me.

Foxyferret Wed 26-Aug-20 12:40:34

We also have the plastic bottle thingy in the cistern provided by Anglia Water Co. This reduces the amount of water in the cistern. I also have two large water butts in the garden. When it comes to flushing, the only time we don’t is in the night as I find leaving wee really stains the bowl and it takes longer to get it clean. I never run the water when cleaning my teeth, I get wet in the shower and turn it off and on as and when is needed. We have the loos with the automatic lid closures, you only have to touch them to close. Dishwasher always used at full capacity, and washing machine always waiting for a full load of the same type of clothes.

PamelaJI my son has moved to a house with one of those sink/cistern thingies. It’s fine for washing your hands, but nothing else. I love the way that the water runs into the tank, ready for the next flush. Some Aussie houses have tanks which collect water from showers and baths and use it for flushing the loo or watering the garden. I have a plastic one which collect rainwater for garden use. I also don’t flush the loo after every wee, but I’m on my own all day.
Water is a scarce resource, and some countries are beginning to have supply problems, especially those where home swimming pools are popular. I remember reading a prediction that future wars will be fought over water supplies, as some countries divert rivers and build dams at the expense of those downstream.
We need to be aware, even in our rainy country, that there isn’t an infinite supply.

pollyperkins Wed 26-Aug-20 12:27:34

My post, or the whole thread?

netflixfan Wed 26-Aug-20 12:10:32

This is a very funny post! How I wish there was a like button on gransnet

pollyperkins Wed 26-Aug-20 12:05:47

We are the other way round. I started not flushing in the en-suite in the night so as not to wake DH but he objected and said it was unhygienic so now we flush every time. But I think we shouldn’t. I don’t find it disgusting when it’s just wee and in the family. Would never not flush in the downstairs loo which visitors use, or when in someone else’s house or public toilets. But if I find it Unflushed in a public loo I just flush before using. I suggest the more squeamish among us don’t go to China. Now there the loos really are disgusting.

icanhandthemback Wed 26-Aug-20 11:59:06

I'd be more than happy to use waste water/rain water to flush but I just can't use a loo with anybody's urine in it, even mine. Clearing up the vomit probably uses more water!
