I really enjoy making preserves from foraged fruit. Can anybody, please, tell me the name of this fruit which is growing wild nearby, and is it edible? It has a rough surface and the leaves look a bit like a chestnut.

100% sure it is a horse chestnut. Great conkers inside.

Old Goat, you could install a free app on your phone, which identifies plants.
That would put us all out of our misery.?

BlueBelle Thu 27-Aug-20 22:52:55

Oh well we ve got as many answers as people nearly all you can really do is wait for it to ripen and then have another cut through

Oopsadaisy4 Thu 27-Aug-20 22:33:39

No spikes on it though, is it a Health and Safety Aware smooth Conker?

Callistemon Thu 27-Aug-20 22:31:47

The leaves are different.

It's a conker!

Oopsadaisy4 Thu 27-Aug-20 20:22:44

I think it does

Marydoll Thu 27-Aug-20 20:18:44

I used an app on my phone to take a screenshot and it came up with Davidia involucrata.

Does it look anything like this?

Oopsadaisy4 Thu 27-Aug-20 19:59:48

The leaves look like Beech leaves, is the fruit hard like a shell or soft?

My Walnuts are green, I’ll grab one tomorrow and cut it in half and see what it looks like inside. They are almost ripe and I don’t think they will look like the one in the picture.( they don’t normally)

MaizieD Thu 27-Aug-20 19:50:50

It's NOT a walnut.

I grew up with a walnut tree. Leaves are nothing like that! Nor is the fruit.

So far, having seen the new photos, horse chestnut seems nearest, but I'm still suspicious... grin

Marmight Thu 27-Aug-20 18:57:13

My on line ‘Guru’ suggests walnut

EllanVannin Thu 27-Aug-20 15:32:29

Whatever it is it's not ripe but I wouldn't be sampling it.

Farmor15 Thu 27-Aug-20 15:32:29

Agree with Calistemon - unripe horse chestnut. I thought walnut previously but I have walnut tree (not old enough for nuts) and leaves are arranged differently.

Callistemon Thu 27-Aug-20 15:23:37

It's a conker, I think. Unripe.
They are horse chestnut leaves

Callistemon Thu 27-Aug-20 15:19:51

It's definitely an alien egg.
I can see a little embryo in there.
Beware, * oldgoat* ?‍♀️

What an intriguing thread! smile

I love your wooden ruler, too, Oldgoat. ❤️ It reminded me of a dream I had recently, in which I had an elasticated measuring tape. It was marvellous for measuring my vital statistics. grin

PetitFromage Thu 27-Aug-20 13:35:39

lychee?

oldgoat Thu 27-Aug-20 13:31:29

Thanks everyone for your help. The fruit is obviously far from ripe though.

oldgoat Thu 27-Aug-20 13:29:44

Here is a close-up of the mystery fruit. I'm sure it's some sort of walnut.
I rubbed the leaves fiorentina but couldn't smell a citrus smell.

fiorentina51 Thu 27-Aug-20 12:59:39

I don't think it's a black walnut. We have one in our garden. The leaves are very different and the fruits have a smooth green outer case. They tend to go a bit browner and wrinkly once they fall from the tree.
If you gently rub the leaves of a black walnut it will release a delicate citrus fragrance.

Sorry that I haven't come back with the answers to your questions yet.
I am suffering from a Zoom Conference bad back! I had a lovely long chat , via zoom, with some GNs that I usually meet in the flesh. At the end of the chat I tried to stand up and found that my back had gone into painful spasms. So beware Zoom. It could be bad for your health.

I'm off to try and get one of the fruit right now, suitably dosed up with paracetamol and Tiger Balm.

I may be gone some time!

NotSpaghetti Thu 27-Aug-20 12:09:06

It looks a bit like the strawberry tree but I don't think the leaves are right.

NotSpaghetti Thu 27-Aug-20 11:59:01

How big are the fruits, OldGoat?

EllanVannin Thu 27-Aug-20 11:55:07

Mum used to make both quince and medlar jellies. Where on earth would these have come from in the 50's ? This thread has reminded me.

Shrub Thu 27-Aug-20 11:42:18

I’m sure it is of the Aesculus genus, or chestnuts. Possibly Aesculus indica, or Indian Horse Chestnut.

MaizieD Thu 27-Aug-20 11:30:01

Not beechnuts, much smaller, woody, case

Not sweet chestnuts, case is covered with hairlike bristles

Not horse chestnut, case is green

Still agog to know just what it is grin
