"The 265 metre-long train is “filled with literature, stories and colourful posters and will feature Pride related information and fun facts during the onboard announcements”."

The rainbow painted train is now a permanent part of the fleet, and Avanti West invites the public to suggest a name for it.

Well what a waste of money. Why can't they just on with their lives, who is interested.? Treat people the same whatever. Years ago, I was inadvertently caught up with a Gay Pride parade, with tiny grand daughter, it was deeply offensive. As for the train I just hope we didn't pay for it I would rather walk. Worry about the homeless, the overworked NHS, the poverty that hardworking families face, despite working long hours.

gillybob Thu 27-Aug-20 07:46:52

I totally agree with you Sparkling . I read the article yesterday which said the entire train would be staffed only with people from the LGBT community which surely cannot be legal ?

NotSpaghetti Thu 27-Aug-20 08:23:41

I read about this too but saw it as a one-off. I don't think it's going to always be staffed with people from the LGBTQ+ community. I read it as a response to not having Pride marches this year.

It's a businesses/marketing tool in my opinion. Just a "wrapper" for an inter-city train.

Lots of comments on Twitter from LGBTQ people who are hostile to it - but some do find it fun.

Personally I don't care either way.

Missfoodlove Thu 27-Aug-20 08:28:19

We have fire engines in our city painted like party buses!

Why do we have to always go to such ridiculous length?

Perhaps we should have a BLM train with with all white staff and only BAME passengers.

Helennonotion Thu 27-Aug-20 08:47:41

A Gay Pride March was deeply offensive?. I'm sure there are many people who find comments like that upsetting and deeply offensive!. A young child would probably have found the parade such fun, as they have no prejudices or bigotry!

Esspee Thu 27-Aug-20 08:48:14

I treat all trains equally. Can’t see any reason to give this one a name as I’ve yet to notice other trains have names.

(Why can’t people just keep their sexual preferences to themselves? Nobody is interested.)

harrigran Thu 27-Aug-20 09:11:59

I could suggest a name but I would probably be hounded off the forum.
FGS can we not just have transport without it looking like something off a toddler's TV programme ?

timetogo2016 Thu 27-Aug-20 09:29:29

Spot on Sparkling, couldn`t have put it any better.

JenniferEccles Thu 27-Aug-20 09:38:36

I agree with everyone else.
What a scandalous waste of money to promote something which applies to, what, less than 2% of the population.

PECS Thu 27-Aug-20 09:42:16

Unfortunately many people are "interested' in other people's sexual preferences to the point where they refuse to employ people, serve people or mix with people who are from the LGBT community. Worse in some places where men & women are still imprisoned, tortured & killed because they do not match the " norm". Prejudice is a nasty thing.

JenniferEccles Thu 27-Aug-20 10:02:09

I’m sure you are right about some countries PEGS but the discussion is about a train here where such things don’t happen.

NotSpaghetti Thu 27-Aug-20 10:08:21

I think it's up to Avanti and shareholders how they decorate their trains. It's a marketing thing.
We are all talking about it after all...

Galaxy Thu 27-Aug-20 10:20:41

People are attacked in this country because of their sexuality jennifer, it happened to two women on public transport recently.

dizzyblonde Thu 27-Aug-20 10:24:30

When my gay friends can walk down the street anywhere in the uk holding hands without getting abuse as heterosexual couples can then I will agree that Pride is not needed, until then it is.

trisher Thu 27-Aug-20 10:28:41

It looks nice- colourful, cheerful and uplifting what a great idea. As for a name most trains have names- My DGS's favourite used to be the Sir Nigel Gresley. So perhaps they could name this after a gay icon- Sir Ian Mckellen or Sir Elton John.

EllanVannin Thu 27-Aug-20 10:36:44

I'm heartily sick of this " look at ME I'm different " society !!
Narcissism at its best !. They don't give a hang about anyone.

There are hundreds of poorly children who would want to feel special. Disabled adults too who would love transport dedicated to them. It doesn't happen !

Sparkling Thu 27-Aug-20 10:42:22

Helennotion, it depends on your idea of decency, old fashioned as that might sound, I consider grown men, all over each other in jewelled basques, spectacular lingerie , many in bondage gear, women as bad, being as outrageous and controversial and flauting the seedier side of life, as not suitable for public decency. Certainly not a child of 6. I really don't care what gender, sexuality anyone is, they have to be true to themselves, that's not the problem, it's how their message is relayed, it's depressing. The gay people I know are as affronted as I. However it takes all sorts, I just avoid such spectacles. As for people not walking down the street of the same sex holding hands, no one really gives a fig, there's other things to worry about. Foes t bother me or anyone I know either do I don't know where you live dizzyblonde.

trisher Thu 27-Aug-20 10:47:11

The way to have an inclusive society EllanVannin is never to denigrate and condemn any one section of that society. I'm sure if you were to present the idea of a train promoting people with disabilities, staffed by them, Avanti might be interested. But condemning this train does nothing to support them or advance their interests.

JenniferEccles Thu 27-Aug-20 10:49:35

But where do we stop? It’s been mentioned that occasionally gay couples may have abusive comments from an ignorant minority, but also the obese claim they sometimes receive unpleasant remarks.

If you think stupid comments from a few justifies the expense then it would never end.

trisher Thu 27-Aug-20 10:52:37

For those who think there are no gay attacks- the two women on a bus attacked by young men aged 15-18.

BlueSky Thu 27-Aug-20 10:53:51

I think 'Gay Pride Parades' attract the wrong sort of attention. They reinforce the stereotypes rather than focusing on the issues. My LGBT friends feel that way too.

greengreengrass Thu 27-Aug-20 11:06:14

How about 'Love Train', you know like the song...

'People all over the world...join in...join the love train...love train...'

See if I can find a you tube vid. The song is so lovely. My daughter identifies as LGBTQ.

Anyone know how to post a link

Its the o'jays...

Really jolly
