Anyone remember their school motto? Ours was 'Gentleness and Justice'. Not sure I lived up to that.

Notre Dame secondary 'Omnibus disce prodesse' (Learn to be of service to humanity)
Taught it meant to bring hope and life to the downtrodden and the disheartened. Quite appropriate in these times.

Members One Of Another. And the school hymn was He Who Would Valiant Be, which I do love.

'Wha daur meddle wi' me'
Modern translation 'Dinnae start'!

Jane10, I love your motto. I'd like to suggest that a 21st century interpretation might be 'Keep your hands tae yersel'!

Non Nobis Solum-Not for us alone was mine.

Cresco. I grow

'Love as Brethren'. If only.....

Pactum Serva - Keep the Faith. School "song" was "Praise my Soul, the King of Heaven" and one claim to fame was that Virginia Wade (tennis player) attended the school.

Aim High and I've always tried to.

Motto,
in necessariis unitas, in dubiis libertas, in omnibus caritas
Hymn, ‘Ninian of Galloway’, in honour of St Ninian who is acknowledged as Scotland’s first saint.

seadragon Sun 27-Sept-20 15:36:41

Ours was "By Learning and Courtesy'. I quite liked it....

“Nid da lle gellir gwell” - Nothing is good if better is possible.

'Wha daur meddle wi' me'

Jane10, since I saw this following my post, I’ve been singing it (in my head, luckily for all bystanders) as the first line of He Who Would Valiant Be. It goes well, don’t you think? grin

Grandma70 ours was Non Sibi Sed Omnibus - sounds very similar... Quaker, by any chance?

Grandma70s Sun 27-Sept-20 16:13:33

Disgruntled: it wasn’t a Quaker school, though I suppose there may have been some association. It was Church of England if anything.

Imprinted on my heart 'fortiter et recite'. Think it meant faithful and strong.

Alishka Sun 27-Sept-20 16:49:15

Dieu et mon droit (and it took me ages to Google itgrin

However, my sister and I can give a truly awe-inspiring screeching rendition of the School Anthem, with me doing the descantwink

Calender37 Sun 27-Sept-20 17:06:41

My school motto at Wimbledon High School was
Ex humilibus excelsia - From humble beginnings to great things.

mancgirl Sun 27-Sept-20 17:47:54

lancslass I'm guessing you're not too far from me. Linda Lee Potter was the giveaway!

Glosgran Sun 27-Sept-20 17:52:39

My Welsh grammar school motto was, "Mi ddylwn, mi allaf, my fynnaf."
Translated that means "I should, I can, I will."

chicken Sun 27-Sept-20 17:59:21

Ours was " A Spe In Spem"---from hope to hope.

grumppa Sun 27-Sept-20 18:06:43

No Latin for yours downtoearth. It's Polonius in Hamlet, and according to Ben Johnson Shakespeare had "small Latin and less Greek". Autocorrect wanted Polonium.

aonk Sun 27-Sept-20 19:36:40

Esse quam videre.
To be rather than to seem.
Didn’t stop the hypocrites though!
