Do you have something that you buy even though it expensive but you can justify it for whatever the reason
Mine is silk pillowcases which I started buying years ago when the menopause kicked in
They are so cool I couldn't go back to cotton ones now

What's yours?

Coming back to silk pillow slips, I did trot to Abakhans sale before lockdown etc and bought 2m x 1.4 m of pretty silk fabric and have turned it into 4 pillowslips - all for £7.50!

The saving on making them myself has now been spent on Estée Lauder posh foundation.....in the Black Friday sale.??.

I can talk myself silly ? on these things!

I’m frugal generally, but will spend generously on travelling and help in the house. Making memories travelling is such a cliche, but I’m missing that very much at the moment.
I’m allergic to housework and delicate health ? is my excuse to have a hand around the place.

I’ve spent years debating about buying a handbag! I can afford it, but as Martin Lewis says, do I need it? Trouble is I’ve wasted so long thinking about it, I’ll never get enough use out of it if I get one now.
I have no hesitation spending on family though.

This thread has made me seriously think, and get a grip. I always have terrible guilt about spending money on myself, thus I buy clothes which are 'ok' rather wonderful. For the money I have spent on 'meh' jumpers from Woolovers and such, I could have had a couple of lovely cashmere ones instead. My wardrobe is bursting at the seams with stuff I don't really like.

Years ago I bought a 'Chinese' rug from a market stall in Staffordshire. It was so pretty and fairly inexpensive, good quality though. I've just arranged to have the fringing replaced - at an eyewatering cost.

I couldn't just throw it out now, could I?

As the saying goes “There are no pockets in shrouds”? My extravagance has been a Land’s End Stadium coat. (In the sale) Long, warm and waterproof and replacing one which was veteran of many school field trips to Malham Tarn and is now downgraded to gardening coat ?

I love a Silk Pillowcaseas well, super cool and really good for my hair.

I bought a lovely new cushion yesterday, even though I have too many already. I can't resist cushions.

The Dior eau de toilette called Diorissimo. It smells of lily-of-the-valley and I only use it spring/summer - from when the lily-of-the-valley come out in the garden in early May.

I use about one bottle a year and it cost me around £60. However this year the price has doubled and I am havering. I cannot imagine life without it, but at over £100.....

Over the years when I couldn't afford it and since, I have tried 10s of alternatives, but none gets that lily-of-the-valley scent the way Diorissimo does.

Me too Monica!
In my early 20s, my mother gave me a bottle which my father had bought home for her, duty free.

Far too jeune fille for me, she pronounced.?‍♀️
50 years on, still my favourite...

I've just ordered a squashy velvet sofa from "Loaf" for my kitchen, way too expensive really, even with the slight, reduction from what they laughingly refer to as their small sale, but I love it nevertheless. Furniture is an occasional purchase which hopefully won't be replaced for years, better therefore to get something you really want than something bought half heartedly.

Other than that I like my favourite perfume, Hermes, Eau de Merveilles, I bought that 20% off on Black Friday, plus a couple of cushions William Morris designs again discounted on Black Friday, I'll always try and get something off if I can that makes me feel slightly better about indulging in fripperies.

I love Victor and Rolf flowerbomb and Dioressimo perfumes. My other luxury is Champagne coupes or saucers not flutes. I adore them. Been buying the occasional pair for years. But they are only used on rare occasions because I’m rather clumsy. If my husband knew what I spent on each pair he would have a heart attack.

M0nica 'havering' has quite a different meaning up here from what you think it means! Havering is talking nonsense. One might say something thing like, 'Och awa' wi' ye mon, yer havering!'It's a great word.
If you're undecided you might be swithering. Not sure if that's just a Scottish word though.

Just after we both retired 12 years ago, DH was diagnosed with throat and neck cancer. With the help of our amazing NHS, he came through it, plus another cancer diagnosis unrelated to the first. We have since had some fantastic holidays / trips all over the world, staying in fabulous hotels. This is our extravagance. Our home life is very quiet, content and fairly simple but we do love plotting our getaways. Our cancelled Canada trip is back on the agenda for September. I take a bit of a gulp when I see what it costs, but we're very fortunate that we can afford it and our family cheers us on.

Redhead56 Thu 13-Jan-22 16:33:29

Good for you Rosiebee we only get one life.

Another zombie thread

Barmeyoldbat Thu 13-Jan-22 16:34:25

Mr Barmey always insists he doesn’t want to be the richest person in the cemetery, so I follow his advice and treat myself to Channel 5, large bottle. It usually lasts about 2 or 3 years and I just love the smell, can’t do without it.

Kim19 Thu 13-Jan-22 16:43:59

Monica, whether you're swithering or havering, just go for it if it makes you that happy. ?

Rosiebee Thu 13-Jan-22 16:44:41

"Another zombie thread" ??? Please explain

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 13-Jan-22 16:47:03

Interesting even if it is an old thread. I find it difficult to justify spending much money on myself. I rely on Christmas and birthdays for perfume and nice soap. Very rarely buy clothes. I do enjoy buying plants for the garden and bird food though and I spend a lot on my dog, nice food and medication.

Aveline Thu 13-Jan-22 17:38:57

It's holidays for us too. Once I've got over the cost I always enjoy them. I appreciate them all the more since Covid. Lovely memories. Hope to make some more. The family encourage us to do it while we're fit and well enough to get the most out of our travels.

Elizabeth27 Thu 13-Jan-22 18:43:04

You can’t win on here, if you start a thread that has already been done it is pointed out, usually abruptly, that there is already one. Resurect an old one that is of interest to those that haven’t seen it and it is complained about.

I have started buying more expensive clothes that fit well and will last instead of spending on cheaper clothes that are not quite right, I wear the expensive clothes instead of saving them for who knows what.

V3ra Thu 13-Jan-22 19:50:25

Some years ago I went to a talk by a fashion stylist who said if you buy an expensive garment, but wear it a lot, think of it as the "cost per wear." So an expensive, good quality coat or pair of boots or shoes, that you wear for years, are a good buy.

LtEve Thu 13-Jan-22 20:27:53

A very expensive hotel stay in a couple of weeks for DH, DD and me. It’s near Hexham and it’s for my birthday and DDs 30th, we’ve been before but DD has always wanted to go. The hotel is lovely, staff are really friendly and it’s not in the least bit stuffy. We will all enjoy ourselves.

Flew business class last time. Some Number 7 face serum. That's about it. I'm not lavish.
