Three cheers for all the competitors who are running their own routes in horrible weather for their charities.

DD2 is running for her sister and the Arthur Rank Hospice in Cambridge who cared for her. DSiL is doing it with her to support her even though he's not a registered competitor. What a star husband he is.

They're almost half way through. Keeeeeep running, sweetie pie!!

Watching the elite runners on TV - and full of admiration, as usual, for all those great people running to raise money for charities. So pleased they will still be able to do so this year and receive their medals.

I didn’t know about this, I am trying to keep off the news as it is so depressing but I will away now and see if I can catch up on it.
Good luck to your DD merlotgran

With only five miles to go she's hurt her hip. She's determined to finish so her DH has diverted to Morrisons to get her some Nurofen. I've done the 'worried mother' thing of nagging her to eat a banana with the Nurofen.

Walking will slow down her time but that doesn't matter a bit.

I much prefer watching the ‘fun runners’. They do an amazing job for charity. So can’t be bothered with the spoilt elite.

merlot I hope your DD makes it to the end without too much pain. So many good causes and particularly this year they will be grateful for donations.

I don't think the London marathon was originally organised for elite runners. This year it would have been far better to have randomly selected amateur runners raising money for charity to actually take part in London. I was there at the first London marathon in 1981 and, from what I've seen on the news, the spirit of that occasion is wonderfully alive and kicking in everyone taking part in their own marathons around the country, but it's not there in London amongst the elite.

She's Done It!! Added half an hour to her hoped for time because of the hip problem but she kept her half of the bargain with her sister and we're so proud of her.

When DD1 was in the hospice she was facing a painful procedure and was refusing to co-operate mainly due to confusion caused by her meds. DD2 said, 'If you have it done I'll run next year's London Marathon,' never thinking her application would be accepted!

Well, it was and she's done it, raising almost double her target of £1,000.

It's been an emotional day for us here. Lots of painful memories but also lots of proud ones.

Well done your DD Merlot. What a wonderful sense of achievement for your DD, running for her sister and such a well deserved charity. Big thumbs up to your SiL nipping in to buy painkillers to help her achieve her goal. ?? to both stars today.

Ruthless Sun 04-Oct-20 22:02:43

Always proud of my daughter but yet another reason was that today she ran the virtual London marathon raising funds for Marie Curie.
It is 30+ years ago now that the Marie Curie nurses supported us at a time of great sadness and we will never forget them.

merlotgran Sun 04-Oct-20 22:12:39

Well done, your daughter, Ruthless. smile

Ruthless Sun 04-Oct-20 22:20:53

Thank you Merlot.
Our daughters deserve to sleep tight tonight!

vickymeldrew Sun 04-Oct-20 22:28:57

For me the London Marathon is all about the charity runners, not the well rewarded elite who just parachute in and scoop up the prize money.

Susan56 Sun 04-Oct-20 22:31:06
