What would you buy/do?

When someone wins a large amount of money on the Lottery, Camelot advises them to take time to get over the shock. They've also discovered that people who have always struggled or been careful with money (which is most of us) find it difficult to spend more than they're used to...almost a sense of guilt. So Camelot advise them to buy themselves something (not gifts for others) that they would never have dreamed of buying in the past. This is to get them used to the idea that they can spend money on themselves and not just on others.

If you won the lottery and followed this advice what would you buy/do? Remember it can't be gifts for others. It has to be for you or you and your partner.

I would buy a small group of barn conversions, overlooking the sea and open land, but very near a small town.
Just a group of 4 so that we could live in one and each of our children could have one each---to either live in permanantly or as a holiday home

We’d both go down to John Lewis and have a Personal Shopper kit the pair of out from head to toe in gorgeous new clothes and stop on the way back for a champagne and lobster meal!

I would buy one of the pretty 2 bed white houses nearby and keep my flat so that there was always space for family to visit at the same time, then I would go to the nearest cat sanctuary and choose a cat or two or maybe I mean let a cat or two choose me.

I've always wanted a cottage in the New Forest.
My home is a New Forest bungalow. It was once a two bedroomed bungalow, but the former owner, a professional football player, who played for Southampton, converted out of all proportion. It's not right in The Forest, it's in a community on the edge of The Forest, right on the Hampshire/Dorset borderline.

I (We) have pretty much all we need. But I would splash out on a new sewing machine. I've been googling them and the one I'd love to have is £10,000!!!

My wife has been making clothes and other items since she was eight, it's a passion that she has never tired of. I treated her to a bespoke built cabin, where she has a couple of modern Juki sewing machines, an overlocker jukiuk.com/ and a sizeable collection of antique machines.

Oops, pressed send too quickly. On a more realistic level I’d have one of those electric scooters that I see more and more often, or a Segway. I really enjoyed my ‘gift experience’ on one.

Helicopter, the ability to fly it and places to land it - so much easier to visit family all over the country. The extra enjoyment would flying over motorway traffic jams and thinking, “ That’s usually me!”

Custom made shoes and sandals that would not give me blisters and custom made bras would change my world for the better then I would set up support schemes for anyone with Aspergers like my son.

Modern house. Lots of glass, with a 3rd floor drawing room overlooking a deserted Northumbrian beach. With an attached catio.

House next door for DD and GS, so I could see my lovely boy every day.

I would buy some land (with planning permission to build houses on) along the coastline and then build a small close of houses for myself and family to use. I'd live there full time as I really miss being by the sea! I have spent a big lottery win so many times - helping family and friends would be a big part of it too.

Moggycuddler Sun 11-Oct-20 10:05:40

If it was a huge amount of money - a perfect house. And I'd like to own a cat rescue. And (since we don't drive) a nice car and a chauffeur to be on call 24/7 to run us wherever we might ever want to go.

Bungalow somewhere rural, then nice teeth.

Obviously I'd buy a house, and employ help etc.
But the very first thing I would buy is a new sofa. I have to spend parts of each day lying flat and my sofa is getting saggy,
(a bit like me really!). So, yes, a good quality new sofa.

Well if I won it now it would be a little late. I wanted to have a place near mum so I could care for her ?
I have never owned my own home so would buy a place where I am and probably still buy somewhere where I'm originally from as I have family and friends there still.

I would buy plot of land and have a chalet bungalow built, ( did this before many years ago with ex husband)had a house before! Obviously it would depend on how much I’d won, have a couple of guard dogs as we have always had, indoor swimming pool, oh and a Range Rover,

Bathsheba Sun 11-Oct-20 09:56:42

Definitely a new house, in a quiet location, but in the same general area where I live now. It would have huge windows to let in lots of light. There would be a heated swimming pool and a summer house in the grounds garden. A new car, but nothing too fancy, as long as it is reliable and comfortable.

Oh, and a gardener/handyman and a cleaner would also be on my shopping list smile

A round the world trip

Graygirl Sun 11-Oct-20 09:50:18

Dental work ,illness has given problems then 2/4weeks at health spa with all the services to help with pain with minimal drugs.

Foxglove77 Sun 11-Oct-20 09:49:06

I've always wanted a cottage in the New Forest. I dont want to move now so it could be a family holiday home. I would splash out on a new front door, triple glazing and thick plush carpets throughout our current home.

Happysexagenarian Sun 11-Oct-20 09:47:34

I (We) have pretty much all we need. But I would splash out on a new sewing machine. I've been googling them and the one I'd love to have is £10,000!!! Would also buy DH a new car, perhaps electric. But its never likely to happen because we don't do the lottery ?

A yacht and learn how to sail it

TerryM Sun 11-Oct-20 09:43:10

Buy a flat in London , have a cleaner and a cook here at home
Move into a one level house and have a hydropool out the back .

On not shallow I would like to fund some of those drive around laundries for the homeless. There are also ones with showers for them .

lovebeigecardigans1955 Sun 11-Oct-20 09:32:32

Mmm, I often fantasise about this! I'd love to buy a pretty cottage with roses round the door.
I expect that would be considered a bit mundane by Camelot but I really don't want a sports car or a helicopter, designer gear or a fancy bag - they're just 'things' aren't they? You don't need that sort of nonsense, do you?

inishowen Sun 11-Oct-20 09:29:14

I would also employ a cleaner and a gardener! Apart from that I'd buy a second home by the sea. It would be big enough for all the family. I might even stretch to staff to change the beds and clean when we'd gone home.

NoddingGanGan Sun 11-Oct-20 09:29:06

I'd buy a flat in London so that my son could live there. He's a freelance musician who has really struggled and yet needs to be in London to be able to undertake such work as there is to be had. He'd never accept a flat as a gift but if it was mine and I asked him to flat sit... At least it would take care of his housing costs.

crimpedhalo Sun 11-Oct-20 09:25:55

If I won a LOT of money, I'd hire a chef, chauffeur and a cleaner!!

For myself I'd have a few days with a friend being pampered and fed healthy tasty food. A few facial treatments and massages too.

All this before the BIG SHOP AND GIVEAWAY?
