Have you said something and then realised you've gaffed? (Is gaffed a word?)

I visited someone in their new home and told them the living room would look great when it was decorated, only to be told it was the only room they'd finished. blush

Many, many times. It is my worst flaw. I am fractionally better than I used to be but not by much.

Oops!

I mentioned to a work colleague how I thought foreign sounding Christian names didn't really work well with very English surnames.

His surname was Smith, he told me that his daughter was called Chantelle. blush

grin
I once said to someone I couldn't understand why someone would call their DD Katy - why not call her Katharine/Catherine then shorten it?
She said, coldly, "My Katy was registered as Katy."

Sorry, if you're on GN and are you're reading this. blush
Katy was a lovely girl and I'm sure has grown into a lovely young woman..

My foot is permanently in my mouth grin

Calendargirl Fri 30-Oct-20 20:32:58

In conversation with a friend, I said I thought old men wearing earrings looked silly.
She gave me a look before saying her dad, 80+, had pierced ears and was ‘trendy’.

Oops!

MissAdventure Fri 30-Oct-20 20:33:01

You've done it again, Call.
Guess what I named my daughter? grin

Callistemon Fri 30-Oct-20 20:36:04

MissAdventure

You've done it again, Call.
Guess what I named my daughter? grin

Oh f***!
Are you my friend?
Or rather, were you my friend?
blush

I did think, as soon as I posted, I could upset a few Gransnetters here!

I tried to give my DC names which couldn't be shortened but guess what? The nicknames are worse.

Callistemon Fri 30-Oct-20 20:37:20

Just to say, I still feel terrible when I think of it.
Katy was such a lovely little girl. They moved away (was it me ?)

MissAdventure Fri 30-Oct-20 20:47:34

Sniff sniff... I may have to rethink our friendship, Callistemon.

Nah, not really. I'm not at all offended. wink

downtoearth Fri 30-Oct-20 20:53:46

My daughter was katy too grin

Callistemon Fri 30-Oct-20 20:56:03

Oh dear.

My favourite book was 'What Katy Did'.
Followed by What Katy Did Next'
If that helps.

I hang my head in shame, just as I did when I said that to my boyfriend 25 years ago,.

Callistemon Fri 30-Oct-20 20:56:31

MissAdventure Fri 30-Oct-20 21:09:16

I named my girl after "what Katy did" as it was a huge favourite of mine. smile

Illte Fri 30-Oct-20 22:34:11

One of the loveliest little girls I ever taught was called Katy.

Lovely to look at , lovely in nature.

And with a endearingly funny deep, gravelly voice.

Wonder what shes doing now. She could be on Gransnet?

welbeck Fri 30-Oct-20 23:22:56

is jeremy corbyn a grandparent, perhaps he'd like to contribute.
he's definitely over 50, and might enjoy a distraction.

When Russell Brand's 'My Booky Wook' came out I didn't realise that DD had bought it for 15yr old DGD as a Christmas present from me because I had been in hospital having a hernia op so sent money because I couldn't go shopping.

We spent Christmas with them and when DGD unwrapped it saying, 'Oh this is great' I didn't make the connection and said, 'I'm not keen on him myself.'

To which she replied, 'So why did you buy it for me?'

Fortunately she saw the funny side of it.

When someone asked my brother what his wife was like he said that she was fat but not as fat as you.

I remember my son telling someone he didn't have a leg to stand on and then realising he actually had an artificial leg!

kircubbin2000 Sat 31-Oct-20 08:29:44

Another time I was recommending a great tv programme to my friend when I suddenly remembered the first scene had a hanging suicide in it and......guess what.

Juliet27 Sat 31-Oct-20 08:36:16
