Is it dangerous to be a Grandad on this forum? Perhaps there is a chaps forum somewhere then!

Marydoll Wed 11-Nov-20 12:22:47

I am of the opinion that the Oxford comma should only be used for emphasis, Callistemon. grin

Callistemon Wed 11-Nov-20 12:23:11

My own children feared my teacher look.
Chez nous hmm we call that The Paddington Bear Stare.

Callistemon Wed 11-Nov-20 12:28:13

Marydoll

I am of the opinion that the Oxford comma should only be used for emphasis, Callistemon. grin

And the Cambridge comma should only be used on one day a year.

(Never begin a sentence with a conjunction.)

Marydoll Wed 11-Nov-20 12:33:16

I also had a teacher voice, they absolutely hated.

To whom (dative case, I think) do these shoes belong?
Despite being annoyed, I always made a point of being grammatically correct. ?

Lucca Wed 11-Nov-20 12:42:17

I was once described by a student as “scary but nice. “
Quite happy with that.

Marydoll Wed 11-Nov-20 12:46:23

From a colleague, Scary, but with a heart of pure marshmallow

Rufus2 Wed 11-Nov-20 13:08:36

only referred to Dr. Google, when referring to medical matters
Marydoll As a teacher, you should know that anyone can obtain a doctorate for anything these days.
All it proves is that you are supposed to be able to think for yourself! hmm

Now, you used to be fond of complaining that threads often get de-railed, so what's going on here?
The thread is headed "Grandads here," yet it is full of linguistic specialists and I'm the only Grandad left standing!
No wonder Omits01 took off, in fright probably when he saw a posse of Grannies laying out the welcome mat; just like an episode of Gransnet's "Desperate Housewives"! shock

Norty stool, here I come, again or maybe Grandad's Shed, but even that had a dearth of Grandads last time I looked. sad
Oh Well! "C'est La Guerre" or something like that!
Good Health
OoRoo

Marydoll Wed 11-Nov-20 14:34:48

Rufus, I'm sure posters on here, who have a doctorate, would be offended at their qualification being devalued by your flippant, but not amusing remark.
As someone who work damned hard and was one year short off achieving a PhD, recluctantly abandoned due to chronic ill health, I find your remark offensive.

I am often guilty of derailing threads, so you are mistaken in your statement, about me complaining.

This thread was enjoyable, until a spanner was thrown in the works. sad

Feelingmyage55 Wed 11-Nov-20 16:15:23

Having watched young people in my family slogging over their research to achieve a PhD, I can only say, that I admire their dedication. I also know that many people will, in the immediate future, benefit from the results of their research. It doesn’t stop at the PhD, the door opens to further research. It is a precarious financial situation for these young researchers too.

grumppa Wed 11-Nov-20 17:03:55

I would never devalue a Ph.D., or a D.Phil., but I am constantly amazed at the number of Professors who have put in an appearance since coronavirus reared its ugly head. I suppose with the increase in the number of universities it should not be unexpected, but it still comes as a shock.

kittylester Wed 11-Nov-20 17:07:42

It's the age of the professors that gets me, grumppa.

Megs36 Wed 11-Nov-20 17:12:38

Careful Rufus, here we go again?

biba70 Wed 11-Nov-20 17:13:30

quizqueen

It's only dangerous if you're a right winger and speak the truth; that goes for grans too!!!

or a left winger wh speaks the truth ;) - that goes even if you are just centre of UKIP ;)

biba70 Wed 11-Nov-20 17:14:05

just left of UKIP ;)

NanKate Wed 11-Nov-20 17:15:48

Why do I get the feeling Rufus that whenever you see a post from our thoughtful and fair Marydoll you seem to take pleasure in getting at her? It’s happened so many times it can’t be chance.

phoenix Wed 11-Nov-20 17:58:20

Oh Rufus, do take a break from attempting to wind people up!

Marydoll Wed 11-Nov-20 18:11:07

Megs, perhaps you would like to elaborate. I'm curious as to what you mean.
I have ignored some of your recent comments on Rufus' Good Evening threads, but I'm afraid I won't be ignoring any more.
Rufus made a dig at me and I duly responded. It's none of your business.

Davidhs Wed 11-Nov-20 19:08:28

I’ve avoided commenting so far but now the thread has turned to academic achievement I will contribute.
Just because someone has PHD or a Doctorate or a Degree is no guarantee they have an ounce of common sense or capable of logical decisions. Half the population and a good many on Gransnet could give no logical reason for Brexit, plenty of other examples
To me Gransnet has a lively forum of wide ranging topics, it’s no problem to me if others disagree, there are no consequences to arguing on a forum

Marydoll Wed 11-Nov-20 19:25:52

Davidhs, I too have absolutely no problem with people disagreeing, it makes reading threads much more interesting. However, I do have a problem with personal remarks directed at posters.
There is now an undercurrent running through this thread , that some posters are probably unaware of. I will not be drawn into it.

This thread was tootling along quite nicely, until a poster decided to change the mood and killed it dead.

MawB2 Wed 11-Nov-20 19:37:50

No wonder Omits01 took off, in fright
I don’t think Omits has taken off, I am sure I have seen his posts elsewhere.
I haven’t quoted the rest of that paragraph which is frankly insulting
If you see the other members like a threatening posse of Grannies etc I am surprised you condescend to spend your valuable time on this site. But I suspect you enjoy the attention you get from some quarters. .
PS “ Bothy ” is indeed pronounced as it looks.
If you heard anything else might I respectfully suggest you turn up the volume?

MawB2 Wed 11-Nov-20 19:39:28

Megs36

Careful Rufus, here we go again?

Nearly right, but I think it’s a case of “Here you go again”

Spangler Wed 11-Nov-20 23:15:31

Callistemon Wed 11-Nov-20 12:28:13

And the Cambridge comma should only be used on one day a year.

That wouldn't be on February 29th of every leap year, per chance?

(Never begin a sentence with a conjunction.)

It was very tempting to answer that: "So true." The word 'so,' being a conjunction, you would have had me on toast.

Marydoll Wed 11-Nov-20 14:34:48
Rufus, I'm sure posters on here, who have a doctorate, would be offended at their qualification being devalued by your flippant, but not amusing remark.

Whilst I agree with that sentiment, Marydoll, I have to admit to a chuckle caused by some graffiti that I saw at college. Above the loo roll in the gents toilet, someone had written: "Philosophy degrees, please take one."

Davidhs Wed 11-Nov-20 19:08:28
Half the population and a good many on Gransnet could give no logical reason for Brexit,
Why should they have to? It's nobody else's business but their's.
To me Gransnet has a lively forum of wide ranging topics, it’s no problem to me if others disagree, there are no consequences to arguing on a forum.
Well yes and no. Yes if you are made of sterner stuff but no if verbal hand grenades upset you. I would suggest to anyone who feels aggrieved at what the might perceive as a spiteful of hurtful post, is to ignore it. After all, you can't have an argument in an empty room.

Callistemon Wed 11-Nov-20 23:22:15

That wouldn't be on February 29th of every leap year, per chance?

No

MawB2 Wed 11-Nov-20 23:39:35

Spangler , as well as being a conjunction, “so” is of course also an adverb and as an adverb can modify an adjective, there is nothing whatsoever wrong with “so true”
In case you need the reminder....
adverb: so
1.
to such a great extent.
"the words tumbled out so fast that I could barely hear

Marydoll Wed 11-Nov-20 23:46:26

.....And I was being accused of derailing the the thread. Harrumph!!!!!! ?
So, I may have started both sentences with a conjunction! ?
