Music for my 16 month old Grandson

My GCs loved the nursery rhymes especially in the car. Lots of sing-along. They preferred real people singing especially when they were small as they could hear better.

If you're looking for classical music to play in the background, I find they prefer music that plays in the higher frequencies. I played some flute sonatas in the car* and the little one soon went to sleep!

A 16 month old should be encouraged to sing, though, so anything simple and repetitive is a good place to start. You can't beat singing yourself, though: clapping, holding hands, jigging to the rhythm and looking at them whilst you are singing.

*on a CD of course!

My two loved "Hello Children Everywhere" too, Geekesse. We all used to sing along in the car to it, much to the amusement of drivers alongside at traffic lights! My eldest used to listen to "Swan Lake" a lot as a baby and toddler. When she was about 2, I took her into the local newsagent and she was humming away in her pushchair. A customer asked her if she was singing a nursery rhyme and she replied, quite indignantly, "No, it's Tchaikovsky!!"

My 16 month old was SO excited every time he heard a Bob Marley song that a close family friend bought him a Bob Marley tape for his second birthday! He had another for Christmas.
Lively up yourself, No woman no cry, Trenchtown rock... he would dance and sing all the way through!
So many happy memories

I also recommend Verdi choruses, played full belt, to settle a crying toddler. I think mine decided they couldn’t make more noise than a full opera chorus playing on a decent stereo, so they just gave up and fell quiet.

Get the CD produced by the franchise Monkey Music which has lots of songs with actions.
My GC loved the CD Hello Children Everywhere with all the old favourites on . Also an album of Danny Kaye singing Inch Worm etc. Then there was The Snowman and Peter and the Wolf.
Ive just told my DS to download the new recording of the Kane’s-Masons playing Carnival of the Animals for the GC.
