Gransnet stopped me using the name I wanted.

Why am I 25 Avalon? I just wanted to be plain Avalon but GN said that name was already taken so I couldn’t have it. I have never seen anyone called Avalon on here. Has anyone come across a plain Avalon? I don’t suppose there is much I can do about but I wonder.

Never mind, Avalon. We will assume you are 25 years old. Perhaps you are?

Esspee Mon 09-Nov-20 16:26:39

If anyone has ever registered the name you won’t be allowed to use it. Most people on Gransnet do not post. I used to be a lurker myself.
You can change it if you want.

Toadinthehole Mon 09-Nov-20 16:27:08

Can’t say I have, but I’m useless with names, so probably wouldn’t remember most people. I don’t tend to focus on the name, unless I want to answer them directly. I just read the posts.

DiscoDancer1975 Mon 09-Nov-20 16:28:56

Can you just change it to something else that you like. I did. My original name seemed to invite hostility for some reason. I’ve never had any with this name.

Not a major issue though is it?

Welcome and enjoy.

There must be somebody with the name ( even if they have left the site) unless you cancel your membership with GN the name and email account stays.

Callistemon Mon 09-Nov-20 16:33:37

I know I'm being nosy, DiscoDancer1975 but I'm itching to know what username could cause hostility.

I had to have a few tries before my username was accepted, 25Avalon. There must be a lot of posters with the same names as my various grannies, great grannies, several of which I tried.

Elegran Mon 09-Nov-20 16:35:22

If you put the name Avalon into the site search box, it shows lots of posts from someone whose username is Avalon, right up to recently. That is why it wasn't available to use. Even having you called 25Avalon could be confusing.

BlueBelle Mon 09-Nov-20 16:39:20

Yes there definitely is another avalon on Gransnet
I can remember that name quite clearly and having just done a search the original avalon was posting in October this year
So actually if I was you I d change my name as the two are very alike and you could easily get muddled up

25Avalon Mon 09-Nov-20 16:39:22

Elegran thanks for explanation. NotTooOld what a kind thought!

annodomini Mon 09-Nov-20 16:45:19

Lots of people register with Gransnet just to enter competitions. Often, when a list of winners is published there's a host of names no-one recognises.

Elegran Mon 09-Nov-20 16:46:06

I have just looked more closely at those posts, and the ones I saw are from you, 25Avalon even back in June 2019. Have you always been cross at having to add 25 to your choice of username, or has it just become annoying now?

25Avalon Mon 09-Nov-20 16:46:14

Since I’ve never seen an Avalon suggests we don’t post on the same subjects. It is my pseudonym on Yahoo Answers and has been for years, even my business includes the word Avalon, so I’ll stick with it albeit with 25 in front.

25Avalon Mon 09-Nov-20 16:48:29

Yes Elegran I have been on here for a while now. Sometimes it irks me but mostly not. Just plain Avalon feels better.

Elegran Mon 09-Nov-20 16:51:02

Well, Avalon the first must have already been on Gransnet before you, so I imagine it irks her too. You are not alone!

Greenfinch Mon 09-Nov-20 17:01:50

I wanted to be Goldfinch but could not be for the same reason.I wish I had been more inventive !

25Avalon Mon 09-Nov-20 17:04:29

Good point but since we reply to different posts maybe it doesn’t really matter. Avalon if you are out there and read this post please let me know if it irks you.

BlueBelle Mon 09-Nov-20 17:15:41

Elegran I think I did the same as you as everyone was answering avalon and I presumed 25Avalon was a new and different poster

Elegran Mon 09-Nov-20 17:28:49

I thought so at the start, but she has been posting for eighteen months or so.

NfkDumpling Mon 09-Nov-20 17:34:39

There is an Avalon I know but I was told the same when I joined although I've never seen a NorfolkDumpling - so I had to use a bit of abbreviation. I don't mind though, its the only bit of me which is abbreviated.

kittylester Mon 09-Nov-20 17:44:39

Does abbreviating work nfk. I might try it!!

DiscoDancer1975 Mon 09-Nov-20 18:10:04

Sorry Callistemon, that ship has sailed now!

MawB2 Mon 09-Nov-20 20:13:43

Trying to guess what this hostility-inducing name might have been.
Was it Donald Trump ? gringrin

Marydoll Mon 09-Nov-20 20:22:50

Avalon, if your business has that name included in it, would it make you easy to be identified?

I would just have chosen something else. After all, GNHQ have every right to call the shots, as they do, it's their site after all.
