I read today that people are threatening to boycott Sainsbury’s because their Christmas advert uses a black family
Whattttttt ! is this what our country is about now

Davidhs

The question is should choice in any area be on merit, or to fill a quota, or just to be PC. At present almost all adverts will include black performers, purely because they will be criticized if they don’t. Blacks achieve in many areas, football has a representation way in excess of the population should we have positive representation in favor of whites ?, if not why not.
Boycotting any brand is ridiculous, it’s going to change nothing.

FFS - are you going for the hat trick today in the use of offensive language? There’s a few groups left yet for you to insult.

JenniferEccles Thu 19-Nov-20 16:38:14

If this is true (where was it reported?) I suspect it’s only a tiny minority who are protesting.

I am as irritated as the next person with political correctness but I don’t think this comes under that category.

Bluebellwould Thu 19-Nov-20 16:34:56

David’s at 15.59 you say in your post ‘blacks’ as a description of black people. I find that to be offensive and racist.

felice Thu 19-Nov-20 16:32:26

I read this and thought it was a joke , then realised that these racists are for real.
One title in a newspaper here was, black families in the UK forbidden to eat gravy.
It was tongue in cheek but very close to the comments.
Is the UK not a big enough laughing stock at the moment without all this bullsh*t, please.

All lives matter is a actually imo d right wing dog whistle.

If Sainsbury's hadn't used a black family that would have been wrong. When I think back to the 60's, nobody seemed to take offence the way they do now. Too many people are so prickly over things. It isn't just Black Lives Matter. ALL lives matter.

There was just rampant racism then, no anti discrimination legislation. I’m sure plenty of black peoples were treated disgracefully but most white people didn’t care and were part of the problem. The 60s weren’t mush fun either for gay people or women

Iam64 Thu 19-Nov-20 16:26:12

Doodledog is correct of course, there is no quota system despite my response to Davidhs earlier, when I suggested there should be,
There have been a number of exercises where job applications from people with exactly the same qualifications, one with a 'foreign' sounding name, the other a white British sounding name. The 'foreign' person doesn't get an interview.

suziewoozie Thu 19-Nov-20 16:25:58

Davidhs

You may have noticed that there is a quota system not just for adverts, even the latest Space launch had a multi ethnic crew, including the first black female astronaut, which was heralded as a big achievement.
Wether there was any element of positive discrimination in that case I have no idea, but there is a lot in other areas, this is always going to cause resentment, someone is always going to feel aggrieved.

And you know this how?

slight correction, Laurence Fox is son of James Fox (the servant fame), not of Edward Fox (day of the jackal fame).
the elder two are brothers and Emilia and Freddie are children of Edward Fox and Joanna David, all actors.

You are quite right, sorry. I actually thought I had typed James Fox. Regardless, he is part of an influential family (and is, IMO, a racist idiot grin).

David, I agree that people should get jobs on the basis of merit. Unfortunately, however, there is a lot of evidence that shows that this is not the case. Even before interview, a lot of employers discriminate on the grounds of perceived race (and gender), so many people of colour don't get a chance to show that they have merit. Even so, there is no quota system.

Do you think that people with green eyes are over-represented in adverts, by the way?

Millie22 Thu 19-Nov-20 16:15:54

I've read some of the twitter comments about the advert and one said it should be shown in Nigeria not the uk and others far worse than that.

JackyB Thu 19-Nov-20 16:14:08

Wasn't it a black family in last year's JL ad? Or maybe the year before. I think it was the one with the dog on the trampoline, can only remember the dog. What's so different about this year's Sainsbury's ad.

Davidhs. Black players contribute a huge am0unt to the glorious game. Curious that they don't figure large in management or coach roles isn't it.

No great loss if those people are going to boycott Sainsbury’s! angry

It doesn’t surprise me to be honest. Political correctness has gone barmy over the last year.

AGAA4 Thu 19-Nov-20 15:59:41

I can't understand people at times. Surely there is more going on in the world to get fired up about?

Oh, and he has 'left acting' in order to found a barmy far-right political party/pressure group.

Doodledog Thu 19-Nov-20 15:29:49

silverlining48 LF is the son of Edward Fox and cousin (I think) to Amelia Fox. He is public school educated and a member of an influential acting family, so clearly speaks from the perspective of a persecuted minority.

He feels that far too much is being done to further the cause of those who 'play' various 'cards' in order to gain advantage in society, and that criticising white male privilege (as opposed to individual white men) is racist and sexist.

Basically, he is one of those people who resent and are aggrieved by hypothetical quota systems and positive discrimination.

The complainers summerlove.
Too much attention is given to people in general. That made me laugh Ellan.

Oh good. smile just checking

luluaugust Thu 19-Nov-20 14:47:46

I am sure the Advertising Company and Sainsburys are going to be delighted with the result and that is what it is all about as ever, money.

silverlining48 Thu 19-Nov-20 14:46:02

Who are these people who plan to boycott Sainsbury? That’s just ridiculous. My dh is just back from there and said it was really busy. Normally we go at 7am so not used to crowds. He has washed his hands and is relaxing under the stairs for 72 hours covid clearance keeping the shopping company smile

Will have to google Laurence fox. No idea who he is. Actor?
