Hello All
I'm often awake in the small hours,
for a variety of reasons which I'm sure that many are familiar with.
So I'm starting this thread for anyone in the same position.
We can chat, share our 3am worries, whatever.
If you fancy popping on for whatever reason, here is the thread for all Night Owls moon
See you later x

And Bluebelle

Sheilasue Mon 23-Nov-20 12:12:46

I wake up for the loo. And the cats at the bottom of the bed so he gets up for a feed. If I can’t get back to sleep I read for half an hour or so.

Greenfinch Mon 23-Nov-20 13:03:11

Three of you have recommended Anne Tyler. Thank you. Which book would be a good one to start with?

LuluD Mon 23-Nov-20 13:25:08

This is a wonderful idea. I’m very often reading in the small hours. The thought of some company is very special, thank you ?

Another insomniac here, wake after about 90 mins then toss for hours til near 6 am when get up and have breakfast having put electric blanket on for a bit. Then can settle back to a decent deep sleep that might be only 2 hrs but dont feel so shattered for rest of day. I listen to radio in night but use earphones which can be sore to wear if sleeping on side which is my habit. So I have covered two earpieces in fleece bag and it works well as can stay near ear and can hear well. I have a timer on radio so can set that to turn off after certain no of minutes lest it put me to sleep!

A wonderful idea I will join you some nights,I usually go to bed at midnight and never get to sleep until 1 am, earliest and knowing we can all meet on line sounds lovely.See you one night.

We might find that most people are awake in the early hours, even though we feel alone at 3am!

Blossoming Mon 23-Nov-20 15:28:53

I fell asleep, lol!

Marilla Mon 23-Nov-20 15:37:55

Hello Greenfinch,
Anne Tyler has written many novels and as someone posted earlier, her stories are slow paced and all about the character. She slowly unravels what is going on beneath the surface of a character and brilliant in describing family dynamics.
Suggested books are: The Clock Winder, Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, A Patchwork Planet and The Accidental Tourist. I hope you find something to read soon!

Greenfinch Mon 23-Nov-20 18:48:11

Thanks Marilla. I will order one of those.

Lovely idea-something I could often use.

Mancjules Mon 23-Nov-20 22:25:07

Since joining the widow club earlier this year I often wake up around 3 or 4am. I do work from home so lucky on that front. I tune in to LBC radio and listen to Steve Allen. No music, no phone ins just him talking about everything and nothing. Keeps me sane when the world outside is just too dark and scary. Recommended to all Night Owls.

I get a couple of hours and then I’m awake until about 6. Sometimes it’s even 8am before I get back to sleep for about 3 hours. Every night for many years.

I’d love to look in

I turned the light off at 11.15 & woke at midnight. So here I am, desperate for sleep, eyes feeling as if they’ve been rubbed with salt and wide flippin’ awake. Anyone else up.....?

Notinthemanual Tue 24-Nov-20 01:44:14

Good morning Night Owls. Just woke up 1:30am bright eyed and bushy tailed, as they say, I was so tired by about 8pm I had to go to bed rather than fall asleep on my little sofa and wake up with aching bones; so I've had my 5 hours, which seems to be all I need these days.
Anyone up for a chat?

Marmight Tue 24-Nov-20 01:51:03

See post above Notin ?. I’m contemplating tea & toast to relieve the boredom Can’t read as my eyes are too ‘tired’. The last 2 nights I slept for 8 hours after a week of sleepless nights so here I am back to normal again.... ?

Well this is a blessing I am often awake about this time. I had a hip replacement when 53 and was told I needed knee replacement but I do not want to go through surgery again. Therefore I do not get much sleep because the pain wakes me up. It seems that inactivity causes more pain but I am used to it now. I have got in the habit of binge watching tv since COVID and read recipe books as I love to cook.

Well I am still awake as usual, I come to bed so tired but am wide awake after a short time.
It was a lovely morning here, sunny but chilly.
My G D went out with me for a short walk and while I enjoyed it ,I was so tired when I got back that I sat down with a cup of tea a mince pie and my book and fell asleep.
Hence being awake still.

It is lovely to sleep in in the morning with no pressure to be somewhere or lots to do but it does make a pigs ear out of any routine.

When my H was here but needed care, I was up before seven everyday to get him sorted even though I may have been up in the night with him, now I look back and wonder how on earth I did it.
I suppose we find the strength from somewhere when we have to but when that is gone we just fold.

I have finished my current book but haven’t got another one sorted to start so I may close my eyes and hope for the best.

I may be back later.

Good morning Marmight You slipped in while I was typing I think. I do like your UN. Might what??? Good morning Redhead56. Sorry to hear your in pain. I said in my previous post, I feel shamefaced complaining that I've just drifted into this weird sleep pattern. I'm not in pain and have no specific worries.
A few weeks ago my neighbour said what I'm doing now sounds like jetlag. I feel a bit cheated.

annsixty Tue 24-Nov-20 02:04:56

Redhead I am 6 weeks post hip replacement, one of the reasons for my sleep related situation.
I had a knee replacement 4 years ago and already planning to get the other one done before too long.
Is there a reason for you not wanting surgery again?

Marmight Tue 24-Nov-20 02:05:42

Hi Redhead. Sorry to hear you are in pain.
I think I have too much screen time, bith tv & iphone but what else can you do in the evening after a long drawn out day! Only so much cleaning ,cooking etc. Ive painted a cupboard with chalk paint, had a huge autumn-clean but obviously not expended enough energy to induce sleep - sigh.

Marmight Tue 24-Nov-20 02:08:06

Yes, it’s just like jetlag!

Notinthemanual Tue 24-Nov-20 02:22:53

I think you are spot on about having not expended enough energy Marmight. I've got a bit anxious about going out, so I'm not going out for walks and have lost enthusiasm for putting music on and jumping around indoors.
Ech! feeling guilty to our friends with pain again. Sorry.
How about you, do you go for walks?

Marmight Tue 24-Nov-20 02:30:41

Yes but not every day. I did a solo charity walk round the village recently for Pancreatic cancer. 24 miles in total but over 6 days, so 4 miles a day. I should continue but the weather was not conducive! I do feel so much better out and exercising in the fresh air. During this 2nd lockdown Ive done a lot of sitting. Im sure my bottom is becoming flatter ?
