Hello All
I'm often awake in the small hours,
for a variety of reasons which I'm sure that many are familiar with.
So I'm starting this thread for anyone in the same position.
We can chat, share our 3am worries, whatever.
If you fancy popping on for whatever reason, here is the thread for all Night Owls moon
See you later x

Still up had a busy day flu jab then gift wrapping for three granddaughters. We went to our sons to see twins he is working away this week down south.
We watched a documentary about the flu of 1918 tonight. I do not think we have moved on at all we have better technology but the people who make decisions are still idiots.
Apart from arthritis this is what appears to be keeping me awake at night worrying about COVID. Tomorrow is another day let’s see what it brings goodnight.

Good Morning grin

Spotted this thread the other day one afternoon and thought I bet I'll post something there very soon.

Not in bed yet. Tough day with DH getting so sidetracked, yet again, and then complaining he'd hadn't got some work done outside today and he needed to get an email off to someone (business). That was 7:00pm. He is computer illiterate. I offer to help but he "needs the practice" he says. At 9:30 he hadn't done the email. At this stage we still hadn't eaten. At 11:00 we'd eaten and I then sorted out the email.

Any way it's now 1:49 and I'm off to bed. DH has a tool catalogue out.

I do worry about his sidetracking. It's getting worse. He had no recollection of what he did yesterday morning.

I hope I don't lie awake worrying about him.

Worried about daughter too today. She's not replied to my daily text. Not like her. She's been quite 'down' recently. Lives in a Tier 3 area but now it's moved to Tier 2.

Might be back tomorrow night. Sleep well folks. Chilly night. Heavy frost outside.

Notinthemanual Fri 27-Nov-20 01:52:06

Hello Owls. That is a good tip for reflux MiniMoon thank you. Hopefully, you've got back to sleep and might read this tomorrow.
Yesterday, I went to the supermarket for the first time in weeks, which is as exciting as it gets right now. Anyone done anything out of the ordinary?

Taichinan Fri 27-Nov-20 01:55:08

Hello Sharon and Mini. I hope your bicarb has worked now Sharon and your fast asleep by now. Mini you sound as if you keep yourself busy like a true ?. My sleep pattern is working a shift pattern just now - 9 hours one night followed by 2-3 the next. I much prefer when it decides to allow me a steady 6-7 each night, but I don't seem to have any control over it at all. Frustrating ?. I'm going to delve into my book now, so sleep tight everyone - eventually ?

Grammaretto Fri 27-Nov-20 01:57:48

Hi Night Owls. Just popping in to say hi.
Where/what was the documentary Redhead? It sounds interesting.

I hope you manage some sleep. Remember nature only requires 5 hours and there are no rules about when you have yours. as long as you're not driving

annsixty Fri 27-Nov-20 02:22:38

Hi all.
After a reasonable night last night now back to the old routine.
It is seldom that I get off before 3am but can then sleep until at least 9.

My live in GD who has been working from home since March went back to work yesterday.
Completely the wrong timing as we are in Tier three but she was having increasing problems with the internet connection that she couldn’t work properly.

I am very vulnerable because of my age but needs must.
We must just be extra vigilant.
A few more pages of my book then I will try once more to nod off.

Mollygo Fri 27-Nov-20 02:56:02

That documentary about the flu pandemic was gruesome Redhead. I thought it would be in my mind but I was asleep by around 12.30 then here I am awake again.
I’m going to try a milky drink and a book for a while, but otherwise I’ll get up and write cards.
Hope you’re all sleeping too well to reply.

Artaylar Fri 27-Nov-20 03:12:41

Hi everyone

New to Gransnet, and still up at stupid o'clock,so it was a nice surprise to find this thread after mooching around a bit.

I dont normally go on line while I'm awake at night, tend to be more of a Kindle girl............working my way through all of Ben Elton's books at the mo. Am finding them very compulsive.

Can I ask, does anyone get "brain zap" when you do finally try and try and nod off. Its happened to me quite a bit over the past few months and its a bit worrying.

Hope you are all able to sleep well soon.

Notinthemanual Fri 27-Nov-20 03:30:09

Hi Artaylar. Not sure what you mean by "brain zap". That sounds scary. I find myself involuntarily flinching myself awake sometimes, don't know why?
Is that similar to your brain zap?

Notinthemanual Fri 27-Nov-20 03:31:54

Artaylar I meant to say flinching as I'm dropping off to sleep.

Artaylar Fri 27-Nov-20 03:42:54

Hi Notinthemanual

The brain zap is a difficult one to describe I think I know what you mean about flinching but dont think its the same thing,...... the 'brain zap' its sort of like a surge of energy that makes a whirr. whoosh noise.....must sound crazy. It generally happens when it feels I'm just about to - finally - drop off, so then it wakes me up........grrrr. And then I worry about dropping off in case I'm having a seizure or something.

I've googled it, and general consensus on google seems to be, not harmful/anything to worry about. The only cause I've seen on google is coming off certain meds, though I'm not on any meds. Sometimes I think its to do with staying on Kindle too late, and my brain really really wants to sleep but is too wired up.

Ashcombe Fri 27-Nov-20 03:43:47

When this thread first started, I envisaged being on it regularly but this is the first night I’ve joined you. After four hours of sound sleep, I find myself wide awake. I can’t complain as I’ve had a few nights of more than six hours, although this is always interrupted by at least two trips to the loo. There are worse things in life.
I’ll try a codeword puzzle and hope to nod off again. Hope the rest of you manage some ? .

Artaylar Fri 27-Nov-20 03:59:59

Hi Ashcombe

The interruptions of trips to the loo, or at least feeling that I need to are a real issue for me too. Its a real pain at times.

Hope your codeword puzzle does the trick. Going to see if I can get back off to zzz's now.

CanadianGran Fri 27-Nov-20 04:09:06

Artaylar - I have had that brain zap a few times, and it is disconcerting., but from what I have read, it is harmless. Similar to body twitch, but in your head if that makes any sense.

Deep breathing exercises sometimes help as well.

janipans Fri 27-Nov-20 04:10:31

nearly 4am and still can't sleep. Think it's lack of exercise and too much time on laptop! ... oh and the alcoholic nightcap! Mind you, I can't sleep even if I'm active, and teatotal either!

Weird about the Brain zap comments Artaylar. Sounds like a sudden rush of adrenaline - could it be an anxiety thing?

Right, going to try again! Night all!

Artaylar Fri 27-Nov-20 04:17:01

Hi Canadian Gran and Janipans

The deep breathing exercises sound worth a try, thank you.

I'm not really feeling anxious, though am grieving the recent loss of a close relative - its been 4 month now,, so may be there is some sub conscious stuff with that going on. I do dream quite a lot about seeing them in a crowd, and then when I cry out their name and rush over, its not them.

Okies, over and out. Night Night all.

Kim19 Fri 27-Nov-20 04:26:38

Hello all, I've been playing a game for the last hour or so then I remembered mention of this. Had a peep out the window. Not as cold as I was anticipating. My life seems to be one of 'projects' big and small at the moment. Current one is assembly of a cabinet from Ikea. Looked straightforward enough but boy amI struggling with the fiddley screws. Have abandoned at the moment but will re attack first thing. My days of perseverance have waned. I also have greater resolve at the start of the day. I pretty much let the body (and mind) dictate nowadays. No pressure, I guess. Lovely retirement........

Puzzler61 Fri 27-Nov-20 04:27:44

Artaylar that sounds very distressing, and I’ve sorry for your recent loss. This is the first time I’ve been on this thread as I usually sleep well, but I have a throbbing mouth. It is most probably an infection in one tooth that has been troublesome for some weeks.
I have an appointment at the dentist this afternoon and I really hope he can take away some of this pain.
Re: the ‘brain zap’ you describe ( I can’t say I have experience of it) but is it like a feeling of an elastic band pinging in your head? It doesn’t sound at all nice.

Puzzler61 Fri 27-Nov-20 04:32:54

Hi Kim19. It’s always good to have a few projects on, a dear friend’s advice to me when I retired was “always leave one thing for tomorrow”. We have so much time on our hands and it’s proved good advice during the lockdowns.
Are all your Ikea screws and bits present ? We have bought self assembly furniture home and then discovered vital bits are missing. So frustrating as our closest Ikea is almost an hour’s drive away.

lemsip Fri 27-Nov-20 04:46:07

went to be at midnight but woke a while ago, now having a cup of tea then going back to bed for more sleep hopefully!

Greenfinch Fri 27-Nov-20 04:52:22

Hi Nightowls. Have been awake for some hours now but haven't the energy to do anything. I usually find knitting helps but have run out of wool and projects. Visit to the local Tip yesterday which was the highlight of our week. Always feel we will miss our allotted time slot as it is 7 miles away with many roadworks and diversions in between but we arrived 10 minutes early yesterday and all went well.

Sparkling Fri 27-Nov-20 04:56:19

Bad night tonight. Know I will be tired all day. ?

Ashcombe Fri 27-Nov-20 05:06:22

Artaylar: thank you!

Having had an early dinner last night as I was expecting a lengthy phone call from an old friend, I’ve decided I’m hungry so I am tucking into cereal and banana plus a decaf tea! Being in a flat means it’s only a few steps to the kitchen and temptation is hard to resist!

Then I hope to nod off! Goodnight, Night Owls!

GrandmasueUK Fri 27-Nov-20 05:30:35

Is it goodnight or good morning Night Owls. Went to bed ages ago but can't sleep so got up again. I'm expecting some parcels to be picked up tomorrow, any time from 9 am to 6 pm. Set my alarm for 8.30 so up again in 3 hours. Not sure what's keeping me awake. No particular worries apart from this blessed Covid. Missing family but so are many others. Ah well I'l try again now. Take care everyone.

cornergran Fri 27-Nov-20 07:27:38

Morning Night Owls. Hope you all finally managed to get some sleep, decent night for me but I’m sure I’ll be with you again soon.
